Mars Sample Return now! (op-ed)
Dr. Bruce Jakosky has been a Mars researcher for almost 50 years and was the principal investigator for the MAVEN mission that explored the Martian upper atmosphere.
Dr. Scott Hubbard served as the first Mars Exploration Program Director, created NASA's Astrobiology Institute, was Center Director for NASA Ames, and founded the Stanford Center for Commercial Space Transportation.
Exploring Mars and searching for life elsewhere have been among NASA's highest priorities for at least 30 years. Returning samples of the Martian surface to Earth for study is the logical next step in these efforts. But planning by NASA for such a sample-return mission has been dropped from the President's proposed budget. The Office of Management and Budget argued that the first human mission could return samples. We want to describe the value of having samples and express our sense of urgency in achieving this goal.
The scientific arguments for returning samples from Mars are compelling. Having samples in our labs here on Earth will allow us to answer fundamental questions about the history of Mars, the evolution of planets in general, the potential for life to have existed on Mars, and whether there actually was life there at some point in its history. Either finding life, or looking and not finding any, would have profound implications for our society and for our understanding of the universe around us.
Our knowledge about Mars has progressed to the point that the questions we're asking can best be addressed with returned samples. While some have argued for simply adding more landers and rovers, the analyses that can be done in laboratories on Earth will provide much more information than can be obtained on Mars with in situ assets that have, of necessity, extremely limited scientific instrumentation.
Worldwide participation by hundreds of investigators in shared samples will increase the certainty of our knowledge, particularly if the fingerprints of life are detected. And, as we know from the Apollo experience, samples are the gift that can keep on giving, even 50 years after acquisition. If we were to decide not to return samples, or to put it off to an uncertain future time to be returned by astronauts, we would be taking a major step backward in exploring the solar system.
Furthermore, if NASA delays the return of the samples so carefully gathered by the Perseverance rover, the critical engineering and technological knowledge of how to land on Mars may be lost in the U.S. as layoffs occur. Only two countries have demonstrated the capability to navigate the tenuous atmosphere of Mars, land successfully and conduct significant science: the USA and China. By abandoning MSR, the U.S. will be conceding the first-ever MSR to China, which has announced plans to return samples by 2031.
In addition to the scientific value, analyzing returned samples will help us dramatically in preparing for upcoming human missions. Doing this would ensure that, when we do send humans, they would do the most compelling science possible. People bring with them incredible skills and insights that can be used to collect the best samples and understand the context in which they occurred. If, instead, we used astronauts to return the samples that the Perseverance rover has collected in Jezero Crater, we would not be taking advantage of these abilities. In essence, we would be sending astronauts to do what a robotic mission could do.

Returning samples in advance of human missions also allows us to reduce the risk in the human missions themselves. We could determine whether there is a risk to human health from Martian dust. We could demonstrate the first round-trip travel to Mars, and we could address important problems in planetary protection so that we don't put the Earth at risk from possible Martian microbes. While the implementation of these solutions certainly won't be the same for human missions as it is for samples, solving them for samples first would give us an incredible advantage in determining how we would solve them for human missions.
The underlying rationale for sending people has to be compelling enough to justify the risk to lives and the cost of the missions. Science provides much of that rationale. We have the opportunity today to implement exploration and science in a way that makes sense from a programmatic, budgetary, and risk perspective, starting with the Mars sample-return mission. The results will be worth the effort and the cost, not just in understanding the world around us in general but also in determining if there has ever been life on Mars. And isn't that what space exploration is all about?

Earth, Mars, Venus — and a long-lost planet — may have once 'waltzed' in perfect harmony around the sun

Four of the solar system's terrestrial planets, including Earth and a long-lost world, likely started life waltzing around the sun to a fixed rhythm, according to a new study. The findings also suggest that those planets formed earlier than previously thought. Astronomers have been increasingly interested in how planetary systems change their internal architecture on cosmic timescales, motivated by several recent exoplanet family discoveries, like the seven-planet cohort orbiting the tiny star TRAPPIST-1. Past research has found that one early stage in a planetary family's metamorphosis involves pairs, triplets or entire systems moving in a rhythmic beat — called resonance — around their parent star. Planets in resonance have orbital periods that form a whole-number ratio. In the TRAPPIST-1 system, for instance, the innermost planet, TRAPPIST-1 b, completes eight orbits for five of its nearest neighbor's. Resonance arises among planets born within a protoplanetary disk — the disk of debris surrounding an infant star — that still contains gas. Such planets plow through the gas, exchanging their rotational motion with it, which often causes them to move toward the star. Many of these planets may come close enough to each other for their orbital periods to "resonate," or become whole-number multiples. Today, the solar system's planets aren't in resonance (although Venus and Mars come close, with an orbital-period ratio of 3.05:1). But in 2005, astronomers showed that Jupiter and Saturn waltzed in a resonant beat soon after their birth. This dance halted abruptly 4.4 billion years ago, however, when the protoplanetary gas disk started evaporating, pushing Saturn, Uranus and Neptune outward in an event called the giant planetary instability. Until now, though, nobody had examined whether the terrestrial planets have ever been in resonance, Chris Ormel, an associate professor at Tsinghua University in China and co-author of the new study, told Live Science by email. This was because "an alternative theory — that the planets formed by a series of giant impacts — was thought to be adequate" to explain how they currently behave, he said. But research from 2013 analyzing Martian isotopes suggested that terrestrial planets could have formed when the protoplanetary disk was still rich in gas, about 10 million years after the solar system's birth. This meant the terrestrial planets may have once been in resonance. To examine the hypothesis, the new study's authors created computer models of the infant solar system. Each model included two giant planets — Jupiter and Saturn — along with four rocky worlds: Mars, Theia (a hypothetical Mars-size object whose collision with early Earth formed our moon), early Earth (prior to Theia's collision) and Venus. Mercury is widely believed to have been created by giant impacts, so the researchers excluded it from the simulations. In all of the models, the team placed Saturn closer to Jupiter than it is today and had the rocky worlds grow by accumulating either pebbles or larger, trillion-ton rock blocks. In most simulations, Venus, Earth, Theia and Mars formed a 2:3:4:6 resonant chain within a million years of simulated time. The researchers then performed 13,200 simulations of the planets' potential movements over a 100-million-year interval, considering the gravitational tugs each planet exerted on the others. At the 10 million-year mark, however, the researchers made Saturn move outward "to simulate the giant planet instability," Shuo Huang, a doctoral student at Tsinghua University and the study's first author, told Live Science by email. The researchers found that, based on the selected parameters, up to half of the simulations re-created the terrestrial planets' current configuration. This included aspects like the occurrence of a single Theia-Earth collision and the 3.05:1 orbital-period ratio of Venus and Mars — a relic of their past resonance. Additionally, the findings suggest the planets formed in the gas-filled protoplanetary disk, within the first 10 million years of the solar system's creation, which is at least 20 million years older than current models predict. Because it (unlike Earth and Mars) hasn't suffered any giant impacts, the authors think its mantle will reflect its ancient origin. And future missions could collect such mantle samples, Huang said. The findings also indicate that outer giant planets can destabilize their inner companions tremendously. The authors said this may explain why resonant systems like TRAPPIST-1 don't have giant outer planets. The new study was published July 18 in The Astrophysical Journal. As a dedicated thriller fan, I find the narrative hook ripe for shocking twists and highly memorable moments. And 'The Lazarus Project' is more proof that when used well, the narrative device creates practically unmissable TV. This British series originally aired on Sky Max in the summer of 2022 (and TNT in the U.S.), but now has found a new streaming home on Netflix. Subscribers hooked by the elevator pitch of a secret organization altering time to save the world will be pleased to know the streaming service hasn't just added a single season of the show either. Both seasons of "The Lazarus Project" have now landed on the big red streamer. At 16 episodes total, 'The Lazarus Project' is the perfect binge-watch this week. It's one of those rare shows that will have your finger hovering over the 'play next episode' button before the credits have even started rolling. With each new twist and turn, you'll be drawn further into its world of time loops, tricky moral questions and compelling characters. The show is already proving quite a hit on Netflix. Less than 48 hours after its arrival on the platform, and it's found its way into the Netflix top 10 most-watched shows list. It currently ranks No. 5 behind original series like "The Hunting Wives" and "Untamed," but as more subscribers get hooked by its many twists, it could even rise to No. 1. So, if you're on the hunt for your next Netflix binge, 'The Lazarus Project' makes a very compelling case for itself. Here's everything you need to know about this gripping sci-fi thriller series, and why critics were so impressed it managed to pull a rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. What is 'The Lazarus Project' about? George (Paapa Essiedu) might be losing his grip on reality. Waking up on July 1, he lives out an eventful three months that include professional success; marrying his girlfriend, Sarah (Charly Clive); preparing for their first child; and facing a global pandemic. But then he awakens on the morning of July 1, with time having reset back to three months earlier. Stuck in a time loop, reliving the same events over and over again, nobody but George seems to be aware that time is resetting. But he's not going insane. Instead, he's one of a select group of people who can uniquely perceive the flow of time and remember the events of each timeline reset. Invited to join the Lazarus Project, he becomes part of an underground organization that works from the shadows to save the world from universe-ending threats, but the ability to rewrite the past and change the future comes with serious temptations. 'The Lazarus Project' reviews — here's why critics rate it 100% On review site Rotten Tomatoes, 'The Lazarus Project' season 1 holds a rare perfect 100% rating. This score comes from a relatively low sample size of 14 reviews, but it still speaks to the sci-fi thriller's quality and the way it managed to grip viewers across its run. 'It's all as fun to watch as it is compelling to consider,' said Judy Berman of TIME Magazine. While Cristina Escobar of praised the series for its 'thoughtful exploration of moral questions' and for packing 'plenty of suspense.' Metro's Sophie Laughton felt the show was 'a watch that's worth the ride,' and Brad Newsome of the Sydney Morning Herald said, 'This intelligent, imaginative sci-fi thriller series sets itself apart with complex, believable characters and dashes of incidental low-key humor.' "Affirming [creator] Joe Barton's status as one of the best screenwriters in the game, The Lazarus Project is exactly the kind of head-spinning, heart-pounding TV that you'll be left wanting to revisit time and again," said Jordan King of Empire Magazine in a four-star review. Dan Einav of the Financial Times was a little more mixed than some critics. 'The opening episode can feel off-puttingly clunky and déjà vu-inducing,' explained Einav. However, he noted that 'In subsequent episodes, thankfully, the eight-parter becomes more intriguing.' The show's second season, which originally debuted in November 2023, doesn't have enough reviews on Rotten Tomatoes for a rating, but the critical takes listed are universally positive. 'This twisty time-loop thriller gets even more dramatic in its second outing. Paapa Essiedu's George is a jittery joy in a smart, sharply scripted show that's lots of fun to watch,' said Leila Latif of the Guardian about 'The Lazarus Project's' second season. Should you stream 'The Lazarus Project' on Netflix? If you're looking for a compelling sci-fi series with intriguing twists and plenty of time-travel shenanigans, then 'The Lazarus Project' isn't just worthy of your watchlist — it should be right at the very top of your streaming pile. It's a compelling thriller that'll hook you instantly. Paapa Essiedu's performance is one of my favorite parts of the show, creating a character in George who is plenty likable, and with some conflicting emotions at play. Yes, he wants to save the world from global catastrophe, but he's got understandable personal desires as well, and these two goals conflict in a way that leads to seriously high-stakes drama. While much of 'The Lazarus Project' is dedicated to intense drama and universe-ending threats, there's just the right amount of humor in the mix. Like when Lazarus Project member Archie (Anjli Mohindra) explains George's abilities to him by describing him as a 'mutant,' but making a point of noting he's "not like Wolverine.' Of course, as a show about time loops and changing the past to alter the future, there is a degree of time travel jargon in 'The Lazarus Project,' and the timeline can get a bit knotty as the show progresses. But these are minor quibbles, and for the most part, 'The Lazarus Project' does a good job of keeping things flowing without the plot spinning out of control. However, before you commit to watching based on all the praise written above, there is one frustrating element I need to warn you about. Sadly, 'The Lazarus Project' was canceled after two seasons, and the season 2 finale ended on a massive cliffhanger — one that looks set to go forever unresolved. So be prepared to be left with lingering questions. This blemish aside, 'The Lazarus Project' is a must-watch series for sci-fi thriller fans, and I'm hoping it's enjoyed a deserved resurgence now that it's arrived on Netflix. In fact, maybe if it manages to make such a large splash on the world's biggest streaming service, then it could be revived for a third season. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part. 'The Lazarus Project' is among the final few major additions to Netflix this month, but the streaming service has already confirmed its slate of new content for August.
