Pakistan, UK ministers announce new steps aimed at boosting trade
ISLAMABAD: Ministers from the UK and Pakistan have announced new measures to boost trade between the two countries, following the launch of the UK-Pakistan Trade Dialogue. As part of the dialogue, ministers announced the creation of a new UK-Pakistan Business Advisory Council bringing together senior business leaders and government officials to facilitate high value trade and investment. The council will provide strategic advice on policy reform, offer a confidential forum for engagement, and help promote commercial opportunities by addressing market access challenges and sharing best practices. Monday's (14 July) meeting in London was co-chaired by the UK Minister for Trade Policy and Economic Security, Douglas Alexander, and Pakistan's Federal Minister of Commerce Jam Kamal Khan. Both ministers agreed to annual ministerial meetings to unlock growth opportunities, and support businesses and investors in the UK and Pakistan. Douglas Alexander said: 'Today's dialogue marks the next step in our long-standing relationship with Pakistan, taking our trading partnership to the next level and unlocking new opportunities for businesses in both our countries.' 'By deepening cooperation in key sectors like healthcare and digital technology – areas central to the UK's Industrial Strategy – we can drive growth, foster innovation, and create jobs.' Jam Kamal said: 'The UK remains one of Pakistan's most important economic partners. This dialogue lays the foundation for a more structured and forward-looking trade relationship. By strengthening collaboration and aligning our priorities, we can expand bilateral trade, attract greater investment, and create sustainable economic opportunities that benefit both nations.' The UK has also announced up to £200,000 to support Pakistan's aspirations to attract investment from the UK. The funds will provide technical assistance for investor outreach, and support matchmaking between Pakistani investors and UK-based opportunities. This initiative reflects the UK's commitment to supporting Pakistan's ambitions to increase outbound investment and to strengthening the bilateral investment relationship. The dialogue highlighted shared ambition to build on recent momentum, with bilateral trade increasing by 7.3 per cent during the final quarter of last year. Bilateral trade is currently valued at £4.7 billion. Today's discussion focused on key sectors including information technology and healthcare, two priority areas under the UK's Industrial Strategy. The UK's Industrial Strategy presents a significant opportunity for businesses and investors. The UK is committed to making it easier, faster, and more predictable for international firms to operate in its market. This includes reforms in skills development, innovation, regulation, and planning – creating a more dynamic and open business environment. Through the alignment of the UK's Industrial Strategy and the UK – Pakistan Trade Dialogue, we are reaffirming our commitment to open and fair trade and to deepening economic ties with key partners like Pakistan. India's equity benchmarks inch lower
MUMBAI: India's equity benchmarks edged down on Monday as worries of weak quarterly results by information technology companies overshadowed gains in other sectors. The Nifty 50 fell 0.27% to 25,082.3 points, while the BSE Sensex lost 0.3% to 82,253.46. The IT index slid 1.1% and was the biggest sectoral loser, extending its 4% fall last week, as uncertainty over US tariffs continued to weigh on demand. Sector leader Tata Consultancy Services posted weak results last week, which propelled investors to remain cautious ahead of the earnings from other companies in the sector, analysts said. HCL Technologies dropped 1.1% ahead of its earnings on the day. 'TCS numbers were below average and that has changed the mood of the IT sector,' said Arun Malhitra, fund manager at CapGrow Capital. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump on Saturday said he would impose a 30% tariff on most imports from the European Union and Mexico from August 1, even as they are locked in long negotiations. 'Until we get some clarity on tariffs, the market will remain remain flattish. There would be no big moves on either sides,' Malhotra said. Back home, investors are waiting for June inflation data, which is likely to show that inflation in India slowed to a more than six-year low on easing of food price rises and a high base, according to a Reuters poll of economists. Eight of the 13 major sectors rose on the day. The broader mid- and small-caps gained 0.7% and 1%, respectively, led by healthcare and real estate stocks. Exchange operator BSE and Jane Street's India trading partner Nuvama Wealth Management rose 3.8% and 1.2%, respectively, as markets regulator said US-based trading firm has deposited 48.44 billion rupees into an escrow account, and requested lifting its trading restrictions. Ola Electric Mobility soared 18.3% as the electric scooter maker reports narrower sequential loss and said gross margins will improve in fiscal year 2026.

NA panel seeks action over PTCL document delay
The Parliamentary Panel on Monday expressed serious concerns over a delay in submitting documents related to a property transaction and recommended disciplinary action against Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL). MNA Aminul Haque of MQM chaired the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication. The chairman expressed displeasure over PTCL's failure to respond in time to queries regarding the sale and purchase agreements of its properties. PTCL President and Etisalat Group CEO Hatem Bamtaref, who attended the meeting via Zoom, was criticised for the delayed submission of briefing papers. Committee member Sher Ali called for formal action against PTCL, stating that reprimands were insufficient. Mahesh Kumar also raised concerns about the stalled merger between Ufone and Telenor. He accused Telenor of intentionally causing service disruptions. The PTA chairman said the merger case is currently under review by the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP). Another member, Sadiq Memon, expressed serious concerns about reports of Microsoft scaling down its operations in Pakistan. Minister of State for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja clarified that Microsoft and Google have engaged in large-scale certification programmes in Pakistan. While Microsoft had laid off 16,000 employees globally over the past year, she said it remains unclear if any Pakistan-based employees were affected. She also revealed ongoing efforts to convert Microsoft's liaison office into a full operational setup in Pakistan and hinted at Google's potential entry into the local market. During the session of the NA body, Etisalat Group's Bamtaref underscored strong UAE-Pakistan ties and added that the group was focusing on emerging technologies like 5G and artificial intelligence. Officials from the Privatisation Commission informed the panel that PTCL's privatisation was finalised in 2006 under an international agreement, though they offered to share further details in an in-camera session. Committee members objected to the lack of prior notice for this request. PTCL officials clarified that the property agreement in question was between the Government of Pakistan and Etisalat and had no direct linkage with PTCL. The chairman postponed the agenda item to the next session and agreed to hold the upcoming meeting in-camera. On broader telecom issues, committee member Zulfiqar Ali lodged complaints about weak mobile signals in his constituency. The USF CEO assured him that the approved project would be completed. The PTA chairman also briefed the parliamentary panel on the status of Long Distance and International (LDI) operators, revealing that 9 out of 21 companies have pending license renewal cases, with over 100 related matters in court. Due to the complexity, the IT minister recommended forming a sub-committee to hear all stakeholders. The chairman agreed to this proposal. The PTA chairman confirmed that the interior ministry had ordered the suspension of internet services in Panjgur due to security concerns. He also revealed that over 100 telecom towers have been damaged in Balochistan, including three completely destroyed between July 9 and 12. Committee member Pauline Baloch emphasised the worsening law and order situation in Balochistan, noting that roads remained blocked for hours and basic services were under threat. Khawaja proposed holding a joint meeting to address these challenges.
