Giants' Matt Chapman struck out three times and singled, all in the same at bat
The San Francisco Giants' third baseman was given three gifts by the home plate umpire in the same at bat.
Chapman fell behind 0-2, and then he looked at three pitches that were all in the strike zone. Any one of them could've struck him out on pinpoint deliveries from Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering.

All three were called balls. And after a foul ball, Chapman lined a single through the right side.

The Phillies definitely weren't happy about it.

Captain Napheesa Collier scored a record-breaking 36 points and was named MVP, while Skylar Diggins became the first player in All-Star history to record a triple-double, finishing with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 15 assists. The team's 151 points were also the most in league history. Eight players finished in double figures for Team Clark, with Kelsey Mitchell leading the effort by dropping 20. But the opponent was too much to handle, as Team Collier opened a 17-point lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Clark's squad mounted a comeback attempt with a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to single digits at the 7:22 mark of the second quarter, 53-44, only to watch Collier respond with a 10-0 spree of her own, propelling her team to a commanding 82-60 halftime lead. Despite a more balanced second half, which saw Team Clark outscore its opponent 71-69, defense remained optional, as is often the case in All-Star games, and Team Collier held on for the win. Kiki Iriafen, a rookie with the Mystics, and Kayla Thornton of the Golden State Valkyries, both recorded double-doubles. Gabby Williams, a forward for the Seattle Storm, tied Sykes with 16 points, followed by another Mystics rookie, Sonia Citron, who had 11. First overall pick in the 2025 draft, Paige Bueckers, scored six points and dished out eight assists. Ten-time All-Star and the most experienced player on the court, Nneka Ogwumike was nearly perfect from the floor, connecting on 7-of-8 for 16 points, along with seven rebounds. Engelbert agreed that the night needs more events. "We'll definitely be looking at different ideas, different formats beyond the skills and three point," Engelbert said. "I got a lot of fans asking me today at WNBA Live: 'We want more W this weekend.' We're going to look at that and hopefully deliver something in the future on that." If the league and players can work it out through bargaining, this feels like a no-brainer to add more content for fans. That mini-event delivered a ton of earned media, which is always a bigger win than a paid marketing campaign. The most successful sports leagues steal ideas from other leagues — or simply use their might to swipe them — and here is where the WNBA should swipe from the NFL, NHL, MLB, college football and other leagues. The WNBA needs to 'eventize' more regular-season games, and a priority for the 2026 season should be using the popularity of Caitlin Clark by scheduling the Fever to play a game at either Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Colts in Indianapolis, or a unique outdoor venue in the Midwest, such as Wrigley Field.
