
New Type 5 diabetes officially recognised, impacts 25m people worldwide

A rare and long-overlooked form of diabetes, linked not to obesity but to malnutrition, has been formally recognised by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) as 'Type 5 diabetes' — a landmark moment for global health experts and patients alike.
Previously misunderstood and often misdiagnosed, Type 5 diabetes – also known as malnutrition-related diabetes or Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) – disproportionately affects lean adolescents and young adults, especially in low and middle-income countries across Asia and Africa.
The IDF's official recognition came via a formal vote at the World Diabetes Congress in Bangkok on 8 April, marking decades of medical debate. Experts say this rare form of diabetes, which develops in teenagers and young adults due to prolonged nutritional deficiencies, affects an estimated 25 million people worldwide.
Unlike the more widely known types of diabetes, which are typically linked to obesity, genetics, or autoimmune responses, Type 5 stems from long-term malnutrition. It leads to poor insulin production due to pancreatic beta cell dysfunction, making standard insulin-based treatments risky and potentially fatal.
Professor Meredith Hawkins of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who has long advocated for its recognition, welcomed the IDF's decision, saying:
'The IDF's recognition of Type 5 diabetes is an important step toward raising awareness of a health problem that is so devastating to so many people.'
She added that the disease had been 'vastly underdiagnosed and poorly understood' for decades. Her research has shown that insulin therapy, often misapplied in these patients, can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar due to the unique metabolic characteristics of the disease.
The condition was first observed in Jamaica in the 1950s and was temporarily included in the World Health Organization's diabetes classifications in the 1980s before being removed in 1999 due to insufficient data.
However, over the past two decades, physicians across developing countries have increasingly reported seeing young, underweight patients who do not respond to typical insulin treatments. Many of these cases were initially misdiagnosed as Type 1 diabetes.
Dr Nihal Thomas of India's Christian Medical College, and a member of the Type 5 Diabetes Working Group, said the disease is 'largely inherited' and requires more targeted research and diagnosis protocols.
'Due to the lack of formal recognition, this condition has been understudied and misdiagnosed. Recognition by the IDF opens the door to better diagnosis and more tailored therapies,' Dr Thomas added.
Experts emphasise that Type 5 diabetes is more common than tuberculosis and nearly as widespread as HIV/AIDS in some regions. However, the absence of an official classification until now has limited research funding, public awareness, and therapeutic innovation.
With formal recognition now in place, health organisations hope the spotlight on Type 5 diabetes will drive efforts to develop diagnostic tools, train healthcare providers, and ensure effective, non-insulin-based treatment strategies for affected populations.
The next steps, researchers say, involve increasing global awareness, particularly among health professionals in high-prevalence areas, and pushing for investment into research and public health solutions tailored to the condition.

Experts urge awareness, junk food tax to curb obesity, cut health costs
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan can significantly reduce national health expenditure by controlling obesity by creating awareness and taxing unhealthy junk foods including sugary drinks, health experts in a media talk revealed here on Thursday. Speaking at an event organised by Novo Nordisk Pakistan titled, 'Unordinary Partnerships to Shape a Healthier Tomorrow' that brought together healthcare professionals, policymakers, and leaders to address the crucial issue of serious chronic diseases, particularly obesity, which impacts millions across Pakistan. The event was also attended by the Ambassador of Denmark to Pakistan, Jakob Linulf, along with the senior management of Novo Nordisk Pakistan. Speaking at the occasion, Jakob Linulf, the Danish ambassador to Pakistan, emphasised on the importance of collaboration, in healthcare by Danish companies like Novo Nordisk operating in Pakistan. He said, 'Partnerships are essential in the fight against obesity. Together, we can foster a healthier society and defeat obesity. I am confident that this culture will continue to positively impact the people of Pakistan'. He said that tackling the issue of diabetes will help increase life expectancy by 10 years from 67 to 77 years, besides increasing productivity. The health experts said that in all the developed countries refined sugar was heavily taxed as it only damages human health with zero benefits, while in Pakistan the government was providing subsidies to the sugar industry. They said that only through creating awareness and controlling the mass use of sugar, the country can save up to $2.6 billion which is being used for the treatment of obesity-related diseases. They further said that obesity is a direct impact of sugary drinks which in Pakistan was responsible for 400,000 deaths annually, higher than smoking. Pakistan at present is ranking third globally on diabetes and top-ranked on account of spreading sugar-related health issues. They said that obesity and non-communicable diseases, especially diabetes and heart diseases are increasing at an alarming rate in Pakistan to deal with the situation, immediate policy measures including increasing taxes on sugary drinks to prevent further losses are inevitable. They said as per International Diabetes Federation, 'Pakistan has the 3rd highest burden of diabetes worldwide with 33 million people living with the disease. In addition, Pakistan is unfortunately the world number 1 country with fastest growth of diabetes over the last one decade. If no immediate policy measures are taken, the number of people living with diabetes will increase to 62 million in Pakistan by 2045.' The cost of diabetes management in 2021 had reached to $2.640 billion in Pakistan which has serious consequence on the economy. Increased consumption of sugary drinks is among the major contributors to rapid spread of diabetes. The research proved that increasing tax on sugary drinks is an evidence-based strategy to reduce their consumption, obesity and diabetes. Rashed Rafique Butt, general manager of Novo Nordisk Pakistan, shared the organisation 100-year legacy of embracing new ideas and different approaches to defeat serious chronic disease which is reflected in their new corporate brand platform - Unordinary Drives Change. He stated, 'Having pioneered scientific breakthroughs, and with over 25 years of obesity research, our GLP-1 treatment supports millions in achieving effective weight loss. Addressing obesity requires collaboration and concerted efforts with diverse network of organizations and stakeholders including government, associations, communities and NGOs—to overcome barriers and drive real change for a healthier future for all'. Highlighting the urgent need for action, Dr Javed Akram, president Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine, emphasised that obesity affects nearly 38 million people in Pakistan and is classified as a disease by the World Health Organization. He acknowledged the extensive impact of obesity on both individuals and the healthcare system. Dr AH Amir, president Pakistan Society of Obesity urged the stakeholders to prioritise countering obesity in the public health discussions, advocating for an inclusive approach that promotes prevention and management while combating the stigma around obesity through effective media campaigns. The event concluded with a unified call to action, encouraging attendees to raise awareness and build collaborative efforts to combat the obesity epidemic in Pakistan. The research, presented at June's ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency, found that popular AI models—including OpenAI's GPT-4o—can validate harmful delusions, miss warning signs of suicidal intent, and show bias against people with schizophrenia or alcohol dependence. In one test, GPT-4o listed tall bridges in New York for a person who had just lost their job, ignoring the possible suicidal context. Researchers reviewed therapeutic standards from global health bodies and created 17 criteria to assess chatbot responses. They concluded that AI models, even the most advanced, often fell short and demonstrated 'sycophancy'—a tendency to validate user input regardless of accuracy or danger. Media reports have already linked chatbot validation to dangerous real-world outcomes, including one fatal police shooting involving a man with schizophrenia and another case of suicide after a chatbot encouraged conspiracy beliefs. They acknowledged potential benefits, particularly in support roles such as journaling, intake surveys, or training tools—with a human therapist still involved. Lead author Jared Moore and co-author Nick Haber stressed the need for stricter safety guardrails and more thoughtful deployment, warning that a chatbot trained to please can't always provide the reality check therapy demands. Israeli tank fire kills 51 people in Gaza crowd trying to get food
CAIRO/GAZA: Israeli tanks fired into a crowd trying to get aid from trucks in the Gaza Strip on Monday, killing at least 51 people, according to medics, in one of the bloodiest incidents yet in mounting violence as desperate residents struggle for food. Video shared on social media showed around a dozen mangled bodies lying in a street in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israeli military acknowledged firing in the area and said it was looking into the incident. Eyewitnesses interviewed by Reuters said Israeli tanks had fired at least two shells at a crowd of thousands, who had gathered on the main eastern road through Khan Younis in the hope of getting food from aid trucks that use the route. 'All of a sudden, they let us move forward and made everyone gather, and then shells started falling, tank shells,' said Alaa, an eyewitness, interviewed by Reuters at Nasser Hospital, where wounded victims lay sprawled on the floor and in corridors due to the lack of space. 'No one is looking at these people with mercy. The people are dying, they are being torn apart, to get food for their children. Look at these people, all these people are torn to get flour to feed their children.' 40 killed in Gaza, many trying to reach food, as UN denounces Israeli-backed aid system Medics said at least 51 people were killed and 200 wounded, at least 20 of them in critical condition. Casualties were being rushed into the hospital in civilian cars, rickshaws, and donkey carts. In a statement, the Israeli Defence Forces said: 'Earlier today, a gathering was identified adjacent to an aid distribution truck that got stuck in the area of Khan Yunis, and in proximity to IDF troops operating in the area. 'The IDF is aware of reports regarding a number of injured individuals from IDF fire following the crowd's approach. The details of the incident are under review. The IDF regrets any harm to uninvolved individuals and operates to minimise harm as much as possible to them while maintaining the safety of our troops.' Medics said at least 14 other people were also killed in separate Israeli gunfire and airstrikes elsewhere in the enclave, taking Tuesday's death toll to at least 65. The incident was the latest in nearly daily mass killings of Palestinians seeking aid in the past three weeks, since Israel partially lifted a total blockade on the territory it had imposed for nearly three months. Israel has been channelling much of the aid it is now allowing into Gaza through a new U.S.- and Israel-backed group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which operates a handful of distribution sites in areas guarded by Israeli forces.
