Student visa giant Study Group secures reprieve with new funding

Yahoo5 days ago

One of the largest sponsors of international students at British universities has landed tens of millions of pounds of new funding from two major investment firms.
Sky News has learnt that Study Group, which was acquired by the French private equity group Ardian in 2019, has sealed a deal which will see it become majority-owned by Intermediate Capital Group (ICG) and Bain Capital.
City sources said the two firms were injecting a substantial sum into the company, with Ardian remaining involved as a minority shareholder.
The recapitalisation of Study Group comes after a challenging period for the company, amid growing scrutiny over the number of foreign students who go on to claim asylum.
It emerged last year that more than 800 students for which it had secured visas in the UK had later claimed asylum.
Sources close to Study Group's financial restructuring insisted, however, that its new majority-owners were "highly optimistic" about its prospects.
The company is said to have won a number of significant new contracts recently, although details of these were unclear.
Responding to an enquiry from Sky News, a spokesperson for ICG said: "Bain Capital and ICG will increase their existing stake in leading international education provider, Study Group, partnering with existing shareholder, Ardian, who will retain a stake in the business.
"This new investment underpins Bain Capital and ICG's conviction in Study Group's ambitious growth programme and outstanding management team."
Ardian is said to have injected additional funding into the business on two separate occasions.
At the time of its acquisition of Study Group, it said it supported 30,000 students from more than 140 countries every year.
The company prepares international students for undergraduate courses at leading English-speaking universities by teaching them academic and language skills.
In 2023, it sold its Australian operations to Navitas, a multinational education group.
A spokesperson for Ardian has been contacted for comment.

Former Tory Minister George Freeman Suspended As Trade Envoy Over 'Cash For Questions' Claims

Former Conservative minister George Freeman was 'asked to step back' as a trade envoy for the government last night. It followed claims that he was paid by a company to ask government departments certain questions. He was listed as the trade envoy for Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Brunei but Downing Street confirmed he had been 'suspended' on Monday evening. Freeman, who has been the MP for Mid Norfolk since 2010 and served in both Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson's governments, referred himself to the parliamentary watchdog over the concerns. He has been a paid adviser for a greenhouse gas emissions monitoring service, GHGSat, since April 2024. According to The Sunday Times, which published alleged leak emails from Freeman asking the company director what to ask, he then submitted questions to ministers about the sector the firm operates in. A No.10 spokesperson said: 'Parliamentary standards are a matter for the House and the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner. 'And you can see the individual has referred himself to that process. 'While that investigation takes place, it is right he has been asked to step back from the role, and he has been suspended in representing the UK as a trade envoy until that process has been concluded.' Freeman released a statement over the weekend announcing he had referred himself to the watchdog although he did not believe he had done 'anything wrong.' He said he 'regularly asks experts for clarification on technical points and terminology' as a long-standing advocate of new technologies. Freeman claimed he also 'deeply respects' the parliamentary system, and tries to 'assiduously follow the code of conduct for MPs and the need to act always in the public interest'. 'Throughout my 15 years in parliament (and government) I have always understood the need to be transparent in the work I have done for and with commercial clients and charities and am always willing to answer any criticism,' he said. He added: 'I am very concerned at the unauthorised and targeted access to my emails and diary which I have raised with the police and parliamentary authorities.' New images show how a corner of Prestwich village is being transformed

New images show how a £14m 'travel hub' serving the centre of Prestwich is progressing. The multi-storey travel hub has been under construction at the former Fairfax Road surface level car park for the past four months. The hub is the first significant project ahead of an ambitious £100m regeneration of Prestwich village centre. The closure of the Fairfax Road car park means 168 spaces car parking spaces were lost in the town during the work. Bury Council said the state-of-the-art hub is not only a vital piece of infrastructure, but also a key enabler for unlocking the delivery of future phases of the scheme. The new travel hub is being funded by the government's City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) to support the delivery of the Bee Network, Greater Manchester's ambition for a joined-up travel network. He was joined by members of council development partners Muse and the Vinci Construction team for an on-site tour. Site preparation, ground clearance and piling works are all already complete, as are the Vinci site offices and welfare compound. Drainage works are ongoing and works to create the foundations for the new building are ahead of schedule, with the first and second concrete pour now finished. In August, installation of the steel building frame will begin. The council said the construction method has been developed to limit disruption to neighbours and residents by ensuring work is carried out as quietly and swiftly as the structure is in place, cladding and masonry will be installed, followed by internal fit-out works. The travel hub is expected to be fully completed by the end of July 2026. When open it will have 301 spaces, electric vehicle charging points, cycle storage, and car club vehicles. Later phases of the plans to reboot the village centre include 'creating a thriving destination for shopping, dining and community events'. Coun O'Brien said: 'It's incredibly exciting to see the first phase of this transformation now underway, especially knowing that it marks just the beginning of what's to come. Our vision is to create a vibrant, sustainable village centre that serves the whole community. 'Following completion of the new travel hub, the next phase will see the Longfield Centre transformed into a modern, multifunctional village centre hat meets evolving needs – featuring a new library, high-quality retail units, a new market, versatile community spaces, attractive green public areas, and new homes.' Hugh Taylor, senior project manager at Muse said: 'The transformation of the Longfield Centre will create a vibrant new heart for Prestwich, a welcoming space where the community can come together to meet, socialise, and enjoy village life. 'We're making great progress on the travel hub, which marks just the beginning.'

European Banks' First-Half Stock Gains Are Biggest This Century

European bank stocks just completed their strongest first-half since 1997, and in doing so extended what has been a golden run for the sector. The Stoxx 600 Banks Index rose 29% in the six months through June 30, the top-performing subgroup in Europe, as investors piled into lenders for their strong returns and resilient earnings. An increase in deal-making added more fuel to the fire, particularly in Italy.
