The warning follows a recent case at the Kajang Criminal Sessions Court involving a company director accused of allowing false statements regarding director appointments.
Sandra Sheager Chidambaram, the director in question, was charged under Section 593(a) of the Companies Act 2016. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of RM3 million, or both.
She pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of RM12,000. The next court mention is scheduled for August 22. - Bernama

MIRI (July 10): Yet another retiree here has fallen victim for a fraudulent online investment scheme, losing a total of RM200,000. Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the victim came across an advertisement on Facebook in mid-May offering investment opportunities and clicked on the listed link. 'He was then added into a WhatsApp group called 'A Gathering of Talents F' that was supposedly run by investment brokers. 'He was convinced to invest in the scheme, and make five transfers amounting to RM200,000 to two different bank accounts,' said Mohd Farhan in a statement today. He said the victim realised he had been duped when, in an attempt to withdraw his profits, was told he needed to make further payments. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Mohd Farhan advised the public to remain vigilant and avoid trusting investment schemes that promise high returns within a short period. On Wednesday, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata in a statement said a retiree in his 60s here had also lost RM200,000 to a fraudulent online investment scheme. Mazuki Tambi, 52, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan after the charge under Section 471 of the Penal Code, punishable under Section 468 of the same Code, was read to him. According to the charge, Mazuki allegedly used a forged grant offer letter dated Jan 17, 2024, relating to the publication of a cultural book, with the intention of cheating. The offence was allegedly committed at around 12.18pm at a house on Jalan Cenderawasih, Semariang Baru here on Feb 21, 2024. It was informed that an administrative officer at the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts doubted the authenticity of the grant offer letter submitted by Mazuki, involving an approved amount of RM500,000. A thorough review carried out by the ministry revealed the letter was not genuine. Following a police report lodged, Mazuki was arrested on April 30 this year. The court fixed Aug 12, 2025 for pre-trial case management and allowed the accused to be released on bail of RM2,000 with one local surety. Mazuki was not represented by legal counsel.

Knife-wielding ex-con in 4-hour standoff with Miri cops

MIRI (July 10): A man who had just been released from prison was arrested early today after a four-hour standoff with police in Taman Bumiko here. Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said a team was rushed to the location following a call from a member of the public about a man causing a commotion while armed with a knife. 'When police arrived, they found the suspect standing on the roof of a house while wielding a large kitchen knife 'The man, who has four prior criminal records, was later identified as the husband of the house owner,' he said in a statement. Mohd Farhan said after lengthy negotiations, the suspect finally surrendered to police at about 7.40am, and handed over the knife without any resistance. 'A urine test conducted on the suspect later found he was under the influence of methamphetamine and amphetamine at the time of the incident,' he added. The case is being investigated under Sections 506, 448, and 427 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, house trespass, and committing mischief, respectively. All three Sections provide for imprisonment and fines, upon conviction. Mohd Farhan said the suspect is also being probed under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or up to five years in prison, or both, upon conviction.
