Reinier de Ridder eyes Chimaev vs Du Plessis victor after narrow win over Robert Whittaker
De Ridder won a split decision against Whittaker after a razor-close contest, emerging a 48-47, 47-48, 48-47 victor. With that, the Dutchman moved to 4-0 since making his UFC debut in November.
On top of that impressive run, 'RDR' has pedigree as a former two-weight champion in ONE, which might work in his favour as he looks to race into a title shot.
The grappling specialist, 34, was unable to find the stoppage against Whittaker – having TKOed Bo Nickal and submitted Gerald Meerschaert and Kevin Holland in his previous UFC bouts – and he was even dropped by a huge overhand in round two.
But just as he did against Nickal last time out, De Ridder sapped Whittaker's energy with brutal knees to the body, and he was able to control the Australian, 34, for long spells in certain rounds.
By losing the decision, Whittaker fell to back-to-back losses for the first time since 2014. In his previous fight, in October, he suffered a first-round submission by Khamzat Chimaev, who will challenge Dricus Du Plessis for the middleweight title in August.
And De Ridder is adamant that he wants to fight the winner of that contest, or even weigh in as the back-up fighter.
'Very close,' De Ridder said about his fight with Whittaker. 'I don't want to fight like this. This guy was too tough. I want to finish a guy in the first round, it would be much better. I expected to take him down and choke him out, but he was amazing. So tough, so durable.
'Maybe Khamzat, Dricus next. Give me a chance to fight for that strap.'

Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen wins first chess competition at Esports World Cup
Number one grandmaster, Magnus Carlsen, has won the inaugural online chess competition at the Esports World Cup. The 34-year-old Norwegian will take home $250,000 (around £188,000).The Esports World Cup (EWC) being held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is one of the biggest multi-discipline tournaments in competitive professional gaming. The inclusion of chess in this year's schedule was somewhat controversial, but the tournament's organisers argued it counted as an esport as it is played by millions of people of all ages. This is the second time the EWC has been staged and it comes with a total prize pot of around $70m (£50m). Over a period of seven weeks, teams from around the world compete across 25 popular games, including Call of Duty, Street Fighter and League of Legends. The EWC said including chess this year has seen the game reach a "new milestone", 139 years after the first World Chess Champion was the Esports world cup, competitors sit at their computer on a stage in front of a live audience, wearing heart-rate monitors. Much like with traditional sport, there are large screens, big name sponsors and commentators. A number of grandmasters took part in the online competition, which saw players go through a group stage before the top-scorers made it to the playoffs. It was the world's best traditional chess player who cinched the title, after beating number eight Alireza Firouzja. Carlsen is no stranger to embracing modernity in the embracing modernity in the game. Al-Nassr 'plot new bombshell move for Bruno Fernandes' just weeks after hiring Man United captain's former boss - as manager 'eyes Portuguese link-up with Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Felix'
Bruno Fernandes has once again been linked with a sensational move to the Saudi Pro League, with Al-Nassr the latest club reportedly vying for his signature. The Manchester United maestro was the subject of a stunning £200million proposal from Al-Hilal earlier this summer after Mail Sport revealed his agent had travelled to Riyadh for face-to-face talks. Fernandes ultimately turned down the lucrative proposal at the wish of Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim, with the midfielder keen to prolong his career in Europe. But, according to Portuguese publication A Bola, Cristiano Ronaldo 's Al-Nassr are now considering tabling an offer for Fernandes. It's thought that the club's new coach Jorge Jesus - who gave Fernandes his Sporting Lisbon debut in 2017 - wants to make him the latest Portuguese star to embark on a Saudi switch. He would join Ronaldo, Otavio and more recently Joao Felix in Riyadh if a deal was complete. After a dismal year at Chelsea and later on loan at AC Milan, 25-year-old Felix made the move this week after Al-Nassr paid an initial £26million transfer fee to the Blues, which could rise to £43m. It would be something of a surprise to United fans if Bruno left now, just a couple of weeks ahead of the club's first game of the Premier League season against Arsenal. Announcing his decision to stay in Manchester in June, Fernandes said in a statement: 'It would have been an easy move. I had Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo there (at Al-Hilal), two people I have a great friendship with. 'But I want to stay at the highest level, play in big competitions, because I still feel capable. 'There was an opportunity. The president called me and asked if I wanted to go there. They were waiting for me. 'I spoke to coach Amorim and he asked me not to go. Manchester United didn't want to sell me. They don't need the money. If I had wanted to leave, they would have made it happen.' The loss of club captain Fernandes would come as a huge blow to United as they look to avenge a dire season in 2024/25. Amorim's side slumped to their worst ever Premier League finish of 15th, which was compounded by a disappointing 1-0 loss to Ange Postocoglou's Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. Amorim and club officials have so far strengthened this summer with the signings of Bryan Mbuemo and Matheus Cunha, paying around £70m for each player. It's hoped the two Premier League-proven additions will boost a struggling Red Devils front line, which will be almost totally new-look come the start of next season. United are reportedly working on a deal to bring RB Leipzig frontman Benjamin Sesko to Old Trafford, with Rasmus Hojlund potentially going the other way in a swap. But it's thought the Red Devils need to offload players before they make an official bid, with a 'bomb squad' of four outcasts set for exits.
