Alessia Russo willing ‘to suffer' in Arsenal's battle Champions League glory with holders Barcelona

The Sun24-05-2025
ALESSIA RUSSO is ready to suffer against Barcelona if this leads to Arsenal lifting Europe's biggest club prize once more.
The chance of playing in Champions League final is a dream the Gunners striker has carried since childhood.

An ambition she "would have bitten off an arm" to fulfil.
The dream Russo, 26, had during her younger years of featuring in a Champions League final is just hours away from coming true.
It will be shared with a club who are to date the only English side to have won the women's contest with their triumph over Swedish outfit Umea 18 years ago.
This striker said: "As a little kid, the idea of competing in the Champions League, let alone playing in the final, is something I would have bit an arm off to get.
"Now it's coming around, it feels special and we're just trying to enjoy the build-up and the moment.
"I know that (so much) work has been done (by the players and the club) for a long time
" Arsenal have been significant in terms of women's clubs from England in the Champions League and making history in that competition.
"We know what we're coming up against with Barcelona. Their history speaks for itself."
Barcelona have come a long way since their Champions League debut back in October 20212
A match that ended with their 4-0 group stage loss to an Arsenal team then managed by English gaffer Laura Harvey
At 5:00pm today at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon, Portugal, a massive challenge faces Russo, her team-mates and their Dutch coach Renee Slegers.
Arsenal hope to become the first team to topple Barcelona in the contest's decider since Lyon's triumph three years ago
The ten-time top-flight champs of Spain have won three of the last four finals
Their journey to this one included a semi-final dismantling of Chelsea with an 8-2 aggregate win.
Russo added: "They've been there and done it in almost everything.
"Knowing that we're coming up against an absolute world-class team, we have to be at our best, switched on, humble and ready to go
"I feel if we weren't, then we wouldn't be in the final in the first place."
The 50,095 capacity ground they will play in, home of Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon, has hosted some memorable games in the past.
Encounters include Sporting's 3-1 defeat of Manchester United in August 2003 in the stadium's inaugural fixture.
A friendly in which the trickery of a then 18-year-old C ristiano Ronaldo caught the eye of ex-Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
A game that proved pivotal in influencing the Scotman's decision to sign the forward who would go on to become the men's Champions League's all-time top scorer.
Today Russo wants to create some pivotal moments of her own just as she did during Arsenal's semis knockout of Lyon last month.
"It's going to be tough and we're going to have to suffer in moments.
Alessia Russo
She scored her side's third goal last as they pulled off a gutsy, second-leg fightback with the tournament's record winners trounced 4-1 after their 2-1
And the striker, who netted seven goals in ten Champions League appearances, this term is willing to suffer to secure the win.
Russo added: "We want to leave everything on the pitch.
"It's going to be tough and we're going to have to suffer in moments.
"In games like this you just have to leave absolutely everything out there. I know that sounds cliché but it's true.
"The more you're playing in these games and dealing with the pressures, the highs and the lows of it all can only help you further down the line.
"We (my team-mates and me) talked about the biggest games in our careers."
"This is definitely one of them. It's massive for us all and to be doing it with Arsenal feels really special."
The last clash between the Gunners and their opponents, ended in a heavy 4-0 group stage loss for the London side in December 2021
Today the Gunners have the bonus of an ex-Barca star Mariona Caldentey, 29, within their ranks.
The Champions League-winning experience of the Spain playmaker, who has lifted the trophy three-times in the past four years, will be crucial.
Russo said: "Mariona has got a crazy football brain and I'm sure she's got some things up her sleeve.
'It's nice to have input from her, not only just because she's played for Barcelona, but because she's won the Champions League and the World Cup.
"She knows how to win in these important moments."
Arsenal's last foray in a Champions League final 18 years ago resulted in a triumph over Umea after a two-match tie.
The decisive second leg for the team, then managed by former club kitman Vic Akers, ended as a 1-0 win at Boreham Wood with full-back Alex Scott's strike sealing the victory.
It's a game Russo and her pals have been watching in the run-up to today's match.
The striker adds: "We were watching the highlights a couple of weeks ago of the second leg at Boreham Wood.
"It's crazy to think that was the last time an English club won the Champions League.
"I was at an Adidas event with Rachel Yankey (who played in the match) and she reflected on the game.

'She recalled (the atmosphere) at Boreham Wood being electric.
"Rachel said the players wanted to use the crowd massively because our fans are incredible.
"I know we'll have an amazing support out in Lisbon."

Luke Shaw aims brutal dig at four Man Utd players axed by Ruben Amorim

Luke Shaw has hailed the ruthless decisions made by Ruben Amorim this summer and claims Manchester United's refreshed squad can challenge for the Premier League title. The Red Devils endured a nightmare season last time around, finishing in 15th place and losing almost half of their games. Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November but failed to arrest the team's slide as a disjointed group of players failed to adjust to his tactical demands. An abysmal season culminated in a damaging Europa League final defeat against Tottenham which saw the club miss out on European qualification altogether. The rebuilding job is, however, underway in earnest with new signings Mathetus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo looking to make an early impression ahead of games against Bournemouth and Everton in America. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. A search for a new centre forward remains a priority, but arguably Amorim's most important decisions this summer have already been made in ridding the group players Shaw described as 'stragglers'. Marcus Rashford, who has joined Barcelona on loan, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho have all been deemed surplus to requirements and told to find new clubs. Marcus Rashford: The 27-year-old would look to relaunch his career at Barcelona next season having secured a dream loan move last week. The Spanish champions have the option to make the deal permanent for €30m, but Rashford will have to go some to make an impression given Barca's already star studded forward line. Jadon Sancho: After Chelsea opted against making the winger's move permanent following a mixed loan spell last season, it's been a case of back to the drawing board for a player who cost United £73m four years ago. Club's in Italy, including Juventus, have been heavily linked, but personal terms remain an issue. Alejandro Garnacho: Arguably the poster boy of the bomb squad, the Argentine's regular disciplinary breaches made Amorim's decision to freeze him out a relatively simple one. Despite his obvious flaws, the 21-year-old retains a string of admirers in the Premier League with Aston Villa and Chelsea showing clear interest. Antony: Having lost the support of Erik ten Hag, the manager who brought him to Old Trafford, it always seemed unlikely that the £82m signing would be given much of a chance by Amorim. The Brazil international did, however, enjoy a stunning renaissance at Real Betis following a January loan move and although he would dearly love a return to Spain, the La Liga club are struggling to finance a deal which has left the 25-year-old in a state of limbo. Tyrell Malacia: It is, perhaps, harsh to label the Dutchman a 'bomb squad' member given his injury nightmare, but it's clear he has no future at United. Malacia was loaned out to PSV in January but didn't do enough to persuade Amorim he deserved a second chance at Old Trafford and wasn't included in the pre-season tour squad. None of that quartet have been permitted to train with the first team during the summer and, regardless of any more incomings, Shaw insists there is a new dynamic within the current group as a result of Amorim's no nonsense approach. He said: 'His mentality, his demands, he's tough on the group. He leaves not stone unturned. I think there's no stragglers in this group any more. 'Everyone has to put the team first. He's made that very clear. He's picking the team on how he feels will be best for the team and that's his choice. 'Us as players are fully behind him and what he wants to implement. We feel like a real team, the group is so together that's something we need to keep us more as a family and make sure we're driving in the same direction.' Given their obvious recent struggles, Shaw accepted he would be inviting ridicule by harbouring such lofty ambitions but the long-serving left-back sees no issue in aiming high. He added: 'The aim has to be winning the Premier League. I know people will be questioning me for saying it after last season but it has to be that and it's not just me that thinks that. More Trending 'The manager probably wouldn't see it in the press but we all have to have the same beliefs and ambitions and that family feeling together and we'll strive for the same thing.' Shaw's own future has been the subject of speculation over the course of the last week with reports claiming he was on the verge of quitting amid renewed competition for his place following the signing of teenager Diego Leon. 'Last year was awful, I wouldn't wish it ony anyone,' said Shaw, who is currently United's longest-serving player. 'I've got to put it behind me now and focus on what's coming up, what's in the future. My expectations are that I can stay fit and give the manager an option for whatever he may need.' Barcelona 'could be forced to push back Spotify Nou Camp return for a FIFTH time' - as Blaugrana sweat over £1.3bn project's key requirement

Barcelona fans have been hit with news that their Nou Camp return is set to be delayed yet again, with the club reportedly drawing up plans for alternative venues for the start of the upcoming season. Earlier this month, the club were forced to walk back plans to stage the Joan Gamper Trophy, an exhibition match held every August, at the revamped 105,000-seater stadium because of a licensing issue. It was the fourth major delay to the £1.3billion project after the club was unable to meet previous deadlines of November 2024 and February and May of this year. According to Spanish outlet Sport, the Blaugrana are now facing another headache, with the revised return of the September LaLiga clash against Valencia on matchday four looking 'increasingly unlikely' as they continue to wait to receive an occupancy permit from the city council. The council has previously stated that it cannot grant a licence, which they require to host the match, until the stadium works are fully completed. Their report claims that the club could play the fixture at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, where Barca Atletic typically play their fixtures. The club planned to return to the Nou Camp for the start of the LaLiga season is set to be missed Barca have hosted home games at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium during the two-year exile from their iconic home but a return to the ground is not possible due to an event in the arena that weekend. The Spanish champions are reportedly still hopeful of making the deadline but they have begun to draw up alternative options in case they are forced to keep their fans waiting even longer for the homecoming. Even once it reopens the Nou Camp will be at a lower capacity, expected to be between 50,000 to 60,000, until renovations are finished, which is likely to be at the start of the 2026-27 campaign. The completion of a new third tier, a roof installation, interior spaces and development of the stadium's surrounding areas still need to be completed. Last season Hansi Flick led the club to their first league title away from the Nou Camp.
