Rob Violante, former Somers HS athlete, NJ football coach, remembered at funeral

Yahoo21-05-2025
YORKTOWN HEIGHTS - It was a solemn Wednesday morning at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church as friends, family and former students gathered to honor the life of Robert Violante, a beloved high school football coach and lifelong Somers resident.
Many of Violante's former students and colleagues came to the church, where sobs and sniffles could be heard throughout.
Violante, 45, was killed along with three other people in a two-car crash on Wednesday, May 14, on the Taconic State Parkway in New Castle. A van traveling southbound crossed the median between exits 8 and 9 and collided with Violante's Honda sedan that was traveling north in the left lane.
Three passengers in the van, all men from New Jersey, were also killed.
Violante, head football coach at Bergenfield High School in New Jersey, was a member of a well-known Westchester sports family. He was the son of Frank 'Skip' Violante, a legendary high school football coach for Dobbs Ferry, Rye Neck and Somers High Schools, and the brother of Chris and Brian, also high school and collegiate athletes.
Brian Violante read the eulogy at the funeral Mass and Chris Violante read a second one written by a student. They highlighted Violante's joyful nature.
Rob Violante was a star varsity quarterback and basketball player at Somers High School from 1994 to 1998. He attended Iona University, then Iona College, for a year and went on to play football as a quarterback for the University of Delaware Blue Hens, before graduating with a degree in special education at Mercy College in 2001.
Violante followed in his father's footsteps after college and became a high school teacher and football coach at Dobbs Ferry High School.
In 2011, he was hired at Bergenfield High School and stayed for 15 years, one of the longest-tenured head coaches in school history. He also coached track and field and held the position of dean of students before his death.
A burial service at St. Francis Cemetery in Mount Kisco was to follow the funeral Mass.
The Violante family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the newly-created Rob Violante Memorial Scholarship for Bergenfield High School Students.
To donate, send a check made out to the Bergenfield Board of Education with the memo line: Rob Violante Memorial Scholarship.
Checks should be mailed to Matt McGrath at Bergenfield High School, 80 South Prospect Ave., Bergenfield, NJ 07621.

2 charged in connection with Eagan street racing crash that killed 2

Two people face charges in connection with a high-speed crash that killed two young men, which authorities said occurred during a street race. Melody Little, 24 of West St. Paul, and Jordan Weiland, a 20-year-old from White Bear Lake, are each charged with two counts of third-degree murder and two counts of criminal vehicular homicide, according to court documents filed Thursday. The fatal crash happened in Eagan, Minnesota, on June 14. According to a criminal complaint, responding police found three vehicles: a Jeep that was split in half, a Honda with "significant damage" and an undamaged Dodge. Investigators said the three vehicles were going from a "car meet up" in South St. Paul to another in Eagan when the Jeep and Honda lost control on Highway 55. Both went over the concrete median, and the Jeep hit a pole. Police identified Little and Weiland as the drivers of the Dodge and Honda, respectively. Weiland left the scene in another vehicle and police later found him at a hospital, the complaint states. Both people in the Jeep — 19-year-old Reed Schultz and 18-year-old Finnian Cronin — were unresponsive and taken to a hospital. Schultz died shortly after arrival, and Cronin died of his injuries on July 1. Witnesses told police the cars were going more than 100 mph before the crash and presumed they were racing. Videos taken inside the Dodge and Honda confirm each car was going about 110 mph, the complaint states. Little and Weiland both denied they were racing when interviewed by police, though Weiland "agreed that his actions were eminently dangerous," the complaint states. Finnian Cronin's mother Teresa Cronin said his death "is just earth-shattering and life-changing for all of us." The family has received an outpouring of support from the community. "One night, driving home from the hospital, I said to Teresa, 'Do you have any anger towards anyone?' And she said, 'No, I just, my heart breaks for the parents of the other kid,'" said Finnian Cronin's father, Chris Cronin. "Just a terribly unfortunate thing that happened to a bunch of kids that made a poor decision." Note: The video above originally aired July 21, 2025.

N.Y.P.D. Officer Accused of Theft to Pay for ‘Booty' Exercises and BMW

A New York City police officer who previously worked for Wells Fargo was charged on Thursday with spending $87,000 in bank customers' money on personal bills that included BMW payments and a gluteus-building program called Booty by Jacks. The officer, Yeison Rodriguez Acosta, 27, stole and spent the money starting when he worked at a Wells Fargo branch in Westchester County, N.Y., last year through his entry into the Police Academy last fall and his assignment to a precinct in May, prosecutors said. 'The defendant's brazen conduct, as alleged, does a disservice to his colleagues in law enforcement, who wear the badge honorably and took the same oath to protect and serve,' Susan Cacace, the Westchester district attorney, said in a statement. Officer Rodriguez Acosta, of Manhattan, was charged in a felony complaint with nine counts of third-degree grand larceny, nine counts of first-degree identity theft and other crimes. He was arrested on Wednesday, arraigned before Judge Valerie Livingston in Rye City Court Thursday morning and released on the condition that he surrender his passport and call the court every day until the date of his next scheduled appearance in September. A lawyer representing Officer Rodriguez Acosta, John J. Pappalardo, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Nor did the Police Department. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Travis Decker seen on police dashcam footage from car accident 3 days before allegedly killing daughters: report

Fugitive dad Travis Decker was filmed on a police dashboard camera just three days before he allegedly killed his three young daughters, according to a report. Decker, 32, slammed into a car at a red light in Wenatchee, Washington, on May 27, and begged the motorist he crashed into 'not to call the police,' local King 5 reported. The nearly 20-minute dash cam video showed Decker leaning up against his pick-up truck and staring at the responding officer as he completed the police report. Advertisement 4 Police dash cam footage from the May 27 crash showed showed Travis Decker (center) acting strangely after a car accident. king5 The unidentified motorist told the outlet that Decker, a homeless Army veteran, 'looked almost intimidating to me' when he told the soon-to-be fugitive that he had called police. 'I could tell he was not in his full senses,' the driver added, noting Decker asked odd questions during the accident report. Advertisement Police said Decker was also in a traffic accident on May 4, in which the accused killer rear-ended a Honda CRV and sped away. The driver of the Honda tailed Decker's truck and provided his license plate number to police, according to the report. The May 27 encounter with Decker ended with a visibly uncomfortable nine-second long handshake during which the motorist attempted to wrestle his hand away from the fugitive dad. Decker reportedly repeatedly asked the man if he was 'going to be OK' during that awkward exchange, the report stated. Advertisement The other driver was shocked when he recognized Decker's face three days later, plastered across the news. 4 The unidentified motorist said Decker begged him not to call police after the car accident. king5 'I had to stop what I was doing and sit down,' he told King 5. On May 30, Decker allegedly zip-tied plastic bags over the heads of daughters Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia 5, suffocating them to death just hours after picking them up for planned visitation, according to authorities. Advertisement The girls' bodies were found on June 2 — bound at the wrists and necks with zip ties near Rock Island Campground not far from Decker's abandoned truck. 'I truly hope that the legacy of the girls' lives lives on in everyone's heart forever,' grieving mom Whitney Decker said at an event held on their behalf last month. 4 Paityn, Evelyn and Olivia Decker were found zip-tied with bags over their head on June 2, not far from their father's abandoned truck. Facebook/Katie Vogel 'They were incredible,' she added through tears. Authorities are still searching for Decker — and are not certain that the accused fiend is still breathing. 'At this time, there is no certain evidence that Decker remains alive or in this area,' the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office said in a statement last month. 'Seemingly strong early leads gave way to less convincing proofs over the last two weeks of searching. Still, we can't and won't quit this search; Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia Decker deserve justice. And Decker remains a danger to the public as long as he's at large,' the statement said. Wenatchee Police Department via AP US Marshals called off the hunt in Idaho after a false-alarm sighting in Sawtooth National Forest — where a man who looked like Decker was reportedly 'exhibiting odd behavior' on an ATV trail on Fourth of July weekend.
