Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso addresses player futures amid MTN8 success

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has remained diplomatic amid growing uncertainty surrounding the futures of key players Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Peter Shalulile and Khuliso Mudau following their absence from Sunday's MTN8 quarter-final clash.
The Brazilians powered their way into the semi-finals with a commanding 4-0 win over Richards Bay at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
A brace from Iqraam Rayners, a stunner from teenage prodigy Siyabonga Mabena, and a deflected own goal by Simphiwe Mcineka, ensured Downs continued their winning start under the Portuguese tactician.
Their reward?
A two-legged semi-final tie against fierce rivals Orlando Pirates, with Stellenbosch and Sekhukhune United set to contest the other side of the draw. But despite the emphatic display, much of the post-match discussion centred around the notable omissions from the matchday squad.
Shalulile, Ribeiro and Mudau were all missing, sparking speculation amid ongoing reports linking the trio with moves away from Chloorkop.
Lucas Ribeiro must go if their is a good offer for him
He gave us a solid two seasons
He deserves it
The show must go on
We are Mamelodi Sundowns!! — Sandile Dhlomo (@DhlomoV) July 28, 2025

Ribeiro, the reigning Footballer of the Season and top scorer, has been heavily linked with Qatari SC and Fluminense in Brazil. Shalulile, meanwhile, is said to be in negotiations with Tunisian giants Esperance, while Mudau has yet to commit to a new contract with the defending champions.
Cardoso, however, opted for a composed response when questioned on the matter.
'All those things are being sorted out by the club and I'm sure they will be public in proper time,' Cardoso said, after the game.
'I understand what's happening with Lucas, Peter, or Thapelo Morena, who was not here because he had a small injury. But as a coach, I would want to have the team as complete as possible, and all coaches want to receive reinforcements for the new season as quickly as possible.'
With Downs already juggling a busy start to the season, Cardoso acknowledged the reality of player movement — but made it clear the standard at Chloorkop will not drop, regardless of who's available.
No Ribeiro, No Shalulile, No Mudau....

Orlando Pirates FIVE fixtures for August: Can they collect 15 points?
Orlando Pirates will play their second match of the season following their impressive 2-0 win over Polokwane City on Saturday in the MTN8 quarter-finals. With a win under their belt, the Buccaneers will switch their attention to the Betway Premiership this weekend. They host Sekhukhune United at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday at 17:30. Having lost out to Mamelodi Sundowns last year, Pirates will hope to once again challenge Masandawana in the league. The two teams will face each other in the semi-finals of the MTN8 over two legs in the coming weeks. On Saturday, the Sea Robbers host Sekhukhune before travelling to Bloemfontein to play Marumo Gallants in their second league fixture. Eight days later, the Buccaneers will face arguably one of the league's toughest teams in Stellenbosch FC. Abdeslam Ouaddou's men look to avenge their loss that happened late in 2024, which ultimately saw their title charge derailed. After hosting Stellies, Orlando Pirates will have another home match against newboys Orbit College on 26 August before travelling to Qqeberha to play Chippa United on 31 August. Out of the five fixtures, Pirates play three of them at Orlando Stadium and nothing but three points should satisfy Ouaddou. The Marumo Gallants' match away could be tricky and if Orlando Pirates slip up, they could find themselves once again chasing the league. The away fixture against Chippa is winnable when you look at Ouaddou's squad. Expect the Buccaneers to heavily rotate their players especially with CAF Champions League fixtures coming up. Sundowns to make big announcements
Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to clarify the futures of key players Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Khuliso Mudau. The duo stars were notably absent from the squad that comfortably defeated Richards Bay 4-0 in the MTN8 quarterfinal, fuelling speculation about their status at Sundowns. Ribeiro has been the subject of intense transfer interest, while Mudau is locked in a dispute over a new contract deal with the club. Released Orlando Pirates striker joining fourth PSL club? Sundowns star Lucas Ribeiro attempts a bicycle kick against Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership. Image: Sowetan As reported last week, the 26-year-old Brazilian left the club's training camp in the wake of advanced talks to join Qatar SC or Fluminense in Brazil. Latest on Kaizer Chiefs and Nigerian striker Meanwhile, right-back Mudau (30) has reached the end of his contract, with negotiations over a new deal still unresolved. Although Sundowns hold a one-year extension option and have tabled an improved offer, no agreement has been reached. The defender is also believed to be attracting attention from clubs in North Africa. Additionally, Peter Shalulile (31) is linked with a move to Esperance in Tunisia. 'Regarding Lorch, like Lucas, like Peter, like Mudau, I will not be discussing here,' Sundowns coach Cardoso said via Kick Off . 'Lorch is the situation that is coming from the past and will also be addressed by the club at the proper time, and you will have the information and will be made to the public for sure', he added.
