Germany, Ukraine boost defence cooperation with high-level Kiev talks

Yahoo2 days ago
Germany and Ukraine are aiming to boost cooperation in the defence sector, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Monday at a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha in Kiev.
"Our defence cooperation is a real trump card," Wadephul said on his first visit to the Ukrainian capital since taking office last month.
"It is a logical continuation of our material supplies and we can benefit from it on both sides," he added. "With your wealth of ideas and experience, we will also become better."
Wadephul was accompanied in Kiev by high-ranking representatives of German defence companies.
Talks between business representatives from both countries and with Ukrainian decision-makers were to take place on the fringes of the visit, according to the German Foreign Office.
Wadephul said he would take the defence executives to a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky planned for the afternoon.
"I believe it is in both sides' interests that we work more closely together here," he said.
The aim is to establish new joint ventures in the defence industry "so that Ukraine can produce faster and more for its own defence," the foreign minister said.
After initially supplying mainly weapons, German companies are now increasingly needed in the country, he explained. "There is a willingness to do this, but some obstacles still need to be overcome, bureaucratic obstacles and other problems for the cooperation."
Sybiha warned that the Russian armed forces of today are different from those that initially invaded Ukraine in 2022.
"They are gaining experience, they are also using new technologies on the battlefield," he said.
This is a danger not only for Ukraine, but also for "trans-Atlantic security," Sybiha stated, warning that new air defence systems are needed to protect the cities that are particularly at risk.

Tesla sales tumble amid Musk backlash and mounting competition

Tesla's U.S. sales slumped in the second quarter as mounting competition and signs of backlash against founder CEO Elon Musk chipped away at the electric vehicle maker's lead in the segment. Vehcle sales fell to 384,122 in April through June, a more than 13% drop from 443,956 in the same period last year. Sales of the company's Models 3 and Y totaled 373,728, above the estimate of 356,000 from Wall Street analysts. The decline comes amid renewed friction between Musk and President Trump this week, with the billionaire entrepreneur blasting the Republican tax and spending bill passed by the Senate on Tuesday. Musk has acknowledged that his work as head of the Department of Government Efficiency and his embrace of European far-right candidates have hurt the company. But he attributed much of the sales plunge to customers holding off while they waited for new versions of Tesla's best selling Model Y, and recently predicted a major turnaround in sales. Tesla sales across Europe plummeted by almost 50% in April even as the broader market for electric cars saw growth in the region, according to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association in May. At the same time, sales of battery-electric vehicles by all manufacturers rose about 28%, the group's data shows. Despite the sales slump, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives thinks Tesla is well-positioned for future growth, pointing to the company's push into self-driving vehicles. Tesla in June started testing a "robotaxi" service in Austin, Texas, and is investing heavily in autonomous driving technology. "Autonomous remains the biggest transformation to the auto industry in modern day history, and in our view Tesla will own the autonomous market in the U.S. with the initial launch of unsupervised [full self-driving] in Austin," he said in a note to investors. Tesla's stock price rose $13, or 4%, to $309.30 in morning trade on Wednesday.

W hotel opens in the heart of Florence

Marriott International's W Hotels brand has opened the W Florence in the Italian city's historic center. The hotel is located near the city's Duomo and is housed within a landmark building that was once the home of the Grand Hotel Majestic. The property features 119 guestrooms, including a penthouse with a roughly 1,500-square-foot private terrace that offers views of the Duomo and St. Lorenzo Cathedral. The W Florence's dining offerings are opening in phases. Tratto, a contemporary Italian restaurant helmed by the culinary collective Trattoria Contemporanea, has already made its debut. Tratto operates the hotel's main dining room and bar as well as its W Lounge, courtyard and room service. Two additional venues -- the craft cocktail-focused Zefiro Rooftop and contemporary Korean and Japanese concept Akira Back -- are scheduled to debut later this summer. The hotel also offers a 24/7 gym, outfitted with cardio and strength-training equipment, as well as a central courtyard that can host private events. The Florence property marks the lifestyle flag's second Italian location, joining the W Rome.
