Bill Belichick comes back swinging in response to Robert Kraft comment
When appearing on the Dudes on Dudes podcast, Kraft claimed that hiring Belichick was his greatest move as an owner. However, he also noted that it was a big risk giving up a first-round draft pick for a coach who "won a little over 40 percent of his games in 1999."
Belichick provided a response to ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr., with the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach contesting that he was the one who took the big risk.
"As I told Robert multiple times through the years, I took a big risk by taking the New England Patriots head coaching job," Belichick said. "I already had an opportunity to be the Head Coach of the New York Jets, but the ownership situation was unstable."
Belichick infamously wrote his resignation letter on a napkin after spending one day as the Jets' head coach. He viewed the Jets' football team as a solid situation, but it wasn't enough to cure his concerns for the ownership issues in New York at the time.
The legendary coach claimed he was told beforehand that the job in New England had its own internal issues as well.
"I had been warned by multiple previous Patriots' coaches, as well as other members of other NFL organizations and the media, that the New England job was going to come with many internal obstacles," Belichick said. "I made it clear that we would have to change the way the team was managed to regain the previously attained success."
Belichick would go on to lead the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, nine AFC Championship victories and 17 divisional titles.
Kraft ultimately made the decision to move on from Belichick as the Patriots' head coach in January 2024, after the team suffered back-to-back losing seasons and a 4-13 record in 2023. It brought an end to a 24-year working relationship responsible for turning the Patriots into a historically great franchise.
"I appreciated Robert giving me the opportunity to make those changes and build a program that was consistent with my vision for a championship team," Belichick told ESPN, per Van Natta Jr.

Super Bowl winner Bryan Braman dies at 38 after 6-month battle with cancer
Former NFL linebacker Bryan Braman passed away on Thursday morning after a battle with cancer, his agent confirmed to ESPN. He was 38. Braman had been seeking treatment for an aggressive form of cancer. According to a GoFundMe page set up for his treatment, the former Houston Texan and Philadelphia Eagle had undergone several surgeries in Seattle. Braman had two daughters, ages 11 and 8. The fundraising campaign had raised $88,000, well over its $25,000 goal, with former teammates JJ Watt donating $10,000 and Chris Long donating $3,000. Per the GoFundMe, Braman was diagnosed with cancer in February and had recently undergone a CAR T-cell reprogramming treatment program. Following the news of Braman's passing, Watt posted a photo of him on X, writing, "Rest in peace brother. Gone far too soon." Braman joined the Texans in 2011 as an undrafted free agent out of West Texas A&M. In 2014, he landed in Philadelphia and won the Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017, his final game in the NFL. In six seasons split between the Texans and Eagles, Braman recorded 45 solo and 8 assisted tackles with 1.5 sacks across 97 games. He also recorded a tackle in the Super Bowl as the Eagles defeated Bill Belichick's Patriots, 41-33, for Philadelphia's first NFL championship since 1960. In 2018, Braman described his NFL career, his Super Bowl and his fatherhood as the "three greatest accomplishments in life."

Bill Belichick responds to Robert Kraft's ‘big risk' comments, says he was ‘warned' about Patriots
Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up 'And we did OK,' Kraft added, a joking reference to the unprecedented six Super Bowl wins and 17 division titles. (The actual date of the Belichick trade fell in Jan. 2000, not 1999). Advertisement On Wednesday, 'As I told Robert multiple times through the years, I took a big risk by taking the New England Patriots head coaching job,' Belichick told Van Natta Jr. 'I already had an opportunity to be the head coach of the New York Jets, but the ownership situation was unstable.' Advertisement Belichick claimed that he had been cautioned about taking the Patriots' head coaching role in early 2000 by other coaches. 'I had been warned by multiple previous Patriots coaches, as well as other members of other NFL organizations and the media, that the New England job was going to come with many internal obstacles,' said Belichick. 'I made it clear that we would have to change the way the team was managed to regain the previously attained success.' In his first season, Belichick's Patriots went 5-11. But in 2001, thanks also to the unforeseen rise of Tom Brady, New England made an unexpected run to (and won) the Super Bowl. After that, the Patriots went almost two decades without a losing season. Belichick finished an astounding 266-121 (.687) in the regular season as the team's head coach, and engineered nine Super Bowl appearances. 'I appreciated Robert giving me the opportunity to make those changes and build a program that was consistent with my vision for a championship team,' Belichick noted. Belichick went 36-44 (.450) during his Browns tenure, which had been his only other NFL head coaching role prior to the Patriots. And Kraft's memory of the criticism that the move elicited is Still, Belichick helped direct the Patriots' defense in a Super Bowl run under Bill Parcells in the 1996 season, and had gone on to help Parcells turn the Jets around prior to leaving New York. 'The Jets were a solid team after three years of rebuilding under Bill Parcells, which included an AFC Championship Game appearance in [January] 1999,' Belichick added in his response to ESPN. 'Meanwhile, the Patriots Organization had dismantled their 1996 AFC Championship team and became one of the worst in the AFC. It didn't help that they were $10 million over the cap heading into my first season as Head Coach in 2000.' Advertisement Yet Belichick sought an escape from New York, with Kraft eventually paying the price that Parcells (then working as Jets general manager) demanded. The trade has since been regarded as As for what he specifically thinks Kraft meant by calling his hiring a 'big risk,' Belichick responded to Van Natta Jr. with characteristic economy. NFL insider pumps up Patriots and WR Terry McLaurin trade talk
NFL insider Albert Breer doesn't expect the Washington Commanders to botch their pending contract extension with All-Pro wide receiver Terry McLaurin. However, if the situation remains unresolved and McLaurin is available, Breer believes the New England Patriots would be "very interested" in pursuing him. McLaurin is currently in the final year of his contract in Washington, and he has voiced his frustrations over the failing contract negotiations publicly. He has 77-plus receptions for over 1,000 yards in the last five straight seasons with the Commanders. Last year, he proved to be quarterback Jayden Daniels' top receiving target with 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. "This is a guy who has been a team captain for a long time, exemplary character, all of that, so my anticipation is that the Commanders are going to take a swing at getting something done with him over the course of the next week just because it makes too much sense for both sides," Breer said on Arbella Early Edition. "I think the Patriots would be very interested in this. "Now, there's a price point for all of it, and what would that mean? Obviously, he's not going to come here with an unresolved contract situation, so you better be talking about a draft pick, plus a contract. He's a little older than people realize because he was a five-year college guy. He's over 30 now. Certainly, as far as what they're looking for, from a person, from a player—helping Drake Maye—this guy checks every box." McLaurin is exactly the kind of veteran playmaker the Patriots were initially looking for in free agency before signing four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs. There is still some uncertainty about what they'll get out of Diggs, who is still recovering from the torn ACL injury he suffered last season. Diggs is one of the hardest-working players in the league, and he looks well ahead of schedule in his recovery. With that said, it would be a huge bonus for the team to add McLaurin, an elite player coming off a highly productive season with a young quarterback. A duo of Diggs and McLaurin would be a dramatic facelift for a Patriots offense that has ranked among the worst for the last three seasons. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
