Rochdale grooming gang rapist ‘may have fled UK'
Kasir Bashir, 50, was one of seven men convicted of the sexual exploitation of two white teenage girls in the town between 2001 and 2006.
He was part of a gang who preyed on the vulnerabilities of young girls with 'deeply troubled home lives' to groom them as 'sex slaves' from the age of 13.
Bashir, who worked as a market stall holder in Rochdale, repeatedly raped and abused a teenager at a dark, dinghy flat in Oldham. He was in his mid-20s when he exploited the young and vulnerable girl.
The men – aged 67 to 41 – plied the girls with drugs, alcohol and cigarettes before expecting them to have sex 'whenever and wherever' the defendants and other men wanted, in filthy flats, on rancid mattresses, in cars, car parks, alleyways and disused warehouses.
On the eve of the trial in January, he disappeared. One week later, proceedings at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court were derailed when a jury member asked questions about his absence that his defence argued showed prejudice.
Bashir, from Oldham, was found guilty last month, alongside six other men, after the trial was restarted in his absence.
After the trial, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) announced that an international manhunt was underway and on Sunday it emerged that Bashir may have fled Britain, although this is not certain.
Bashir surrendered his passport as part of bail conditions set by a crown court judge before the trial, the Manchester Evening News reported.
If Bashir, who has been on a police 'critical wanted' list since January, has left Britain he will have done so by illegitimate means, making him harder to track down.
Paul Waugh, the MP for Rochdale, asked how Bashir was able to abscond and why he was not considered more of a flight risk.
It is reported that he had been complying with his bail conditions – which included living and sleeping at a given address, surrendering his passport and attending Rochdale Police Station once a week – up to, and including, the Thursday before his trial.
Co-defendants remanded in custody
Three of Bashir's co-defendants – Mohammed Shahzad, Naheem Akram, and Nisar Hussain – were also out on bail when he went missing.
Police received intelligence that the trio were planning to leave the country and they were remanded in custody ahead of the trial.
They all denied the allegation, but Judge Jonathan Seely said the court was not prepared to take the risk that they might abscond.
Bashir, of Napier Street East, Oldham, was convicted in absentia of multiple counts of rape and indecency with a child, referred to in press reports as Child B. Six other men from Greater Manchester were found guilty of a series of offences.
Mr Waugh said: 'It is deeply alarming that this disgusting grooming gang member absconded on the eve of his trial.
'I have written to both the Ministry of Justice [MoJ] and GMP to ask exactly why a suspected child rapist like Bashir was not considered more of a flight risk or more of a danger to society.
'There are serious questions to answer about the assessment of his suitability for bail and why he was not remanded in custody. The fact that he is at large will rightly anger many of my constituents.'
He added: 'Ultimately, this is a matter for the crown court judge in this case. But I have asked the justice minister to check whether there can be a review of the bail decision by the Attorney General, given the natural public interest this involves.
'Just as importantly, I want to make sure no future grooming gang trial will see a repeat of this outrage, and that all those charged with such serious offences are remanded in custody.'
The MoJ and the Attorney General's office were approached by the Manchester Evening News but declined to comment.

Jury views CCTV footage of Tom Niland hours before alleged fatal assault
A jury has viewed CCTV footage showing 73-year-old Tom Niland walking into a shop near his house in Sligo about two hours before it is alleged three men broke into his home and assaulted him, leaving him with injuries that caused his death 20 months later. Gda Niall McDonald told Tony McGillicuddy SC, prosecuting, that he created a montage from hours of footage downloaded from various CCTV systems in Sligo and Mayo following the assault on Mr Niland on January 18th, 2022. Advertisement Gda McDonald described the movements of a white van travelling around Dromore West and Ballina that morning and afternoon. He said the van appeared to be a Vauxhall Vivaro and he pointed out distinctive characteristics, including a yellow number plate, writing on the side and a green stain on the roof. Just after 1.30pm, a van with those markings pulled into Casey's garage in Ballina. The garda identified the driver as Francis Harman (58) of Nephin Court, Killala Road, Ballina, Co Mayo, and the passenger as John Clarke (37) of Carrowkelly, Ballina. Advertisement Mr McGillicuddy previously told the jury that the prosecution intends to prove that Mr Harman, Mr Clarke and the man currently on trial, John Irving (31) of Shanwar, Foxford, Co Mayo, assaulted Mr Niland later that evening, leaving him with fatal injuries. It is further alleged that they stole Mr Niland's wallet. At Casey's, Gda McDonald said Mr Clarke put fuel into the van before entering the shop. From footage inside the shop, the garda said Mr Clarke can be seen attempting to buy cans of alcohol at the till, but then returning the cans to the off-licence section of the store. He said Mr Harman entered the shop and engaged with staff and the manager before leaving and driving off in the van. At 4.35pm, Gda McDonald said Mr Niland arrived at Feeney's Centra in Dromore West, about 7.5 kilometres from his home. He parked his car and went into the shop, stopping to speak to a man on the way in. Advertisement Between 6pm and 7pm, the prosecution alleges that Mr Irving, Mr Harman and Mr Clarke broke through Mr Niland's door, assaulted him and left. Gda McDonald said at 6.01pm, a van similar to the one driven earlier by Mr Harman with Mr Clarke in the passenger seat did a U-turn at an agri-store and travelled towards Mr Niland's house, which was nearby. The van was not seen again on cameras further along the same road, the garda said. Mr Irving faces four charges in total. It is alleged that he unlawfully killed Mr Niland at Mr Niland's home at Doonflynn, Skreen, Co Sligo by assaulting him on January 18th, 2022. Advertisement Mr Niland was admitted to hospital after neighbours discovered him crossing the N59 covered in blood and with his eyes swollen shut. A doctor has told the jury that Mr Niland suffered bleeding to the brain, a fracture to the orb of his right eye and multiple fractures to the ribs on the right side. Despite initially making progress in hospital, he deteriorated on January 26th and required a ventilator to breathe. He died on September 30th, 2023, aged 75. Mr Irving is accused of entering Mr Niland's home as a trespasser and causing him serious harm. He is further alleged to have intentionally or recklessly caused serious harm to Mr Niland and to have falsely imprisoned him. Mr Irving has pleaded not guilty to all four charges.

Balaclava-clad teen with 'unhealthy interest' in blades 'grinned' as he stabbed 18-year-old through the heart with a Rambo knife, court hears
A balaclava-clad teenager who had an 'unhealthy interest' in knives grinned before fatally stabbing an 18-year-old man through the heart with a Rambo-style knife, a murder trial has heard. Jurors at Derby Crown Court heard that Charles Hartle, who was aged 17 at the time, allegedly carried out an 'utterly pointless killing' when he attacked Noah Smedley on a dark street in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. The alleged attack happened on the evening of December 28 last year with the knife he kept hidden in his tracksuit bottoms. Hartle, now aged 18, sat in the dock on Tuesday wearing glasses, a black jacket and white shirt while Adrian Langdale KC opened the prosecution case. Mr Langdale told the jury of seven women and five men: 'On December 28 2024 you will have been getting over Christmas and preparing for the new year - Charles Hartle was going out on the streets armed with a knife. 'He moved towards Noah, he grinned or smiled before deliberately aiming for and stabbing him in the chest. 'There is no dispute that this lethal weapon was in the hands of that young man Charlie Hartle. 'Noah Smedley, the Crown will say, did absolutely nothing wrong, he did nothing to deserve what happened to him. 'He wasn't himself armed... he did not offer any violence. 'The Crown will say it was an utterly pointless killing other than this defendant's unhealthy interest with knives and the fact he was, the Crown will say, a habitual carrier of knives. 'You will hear that the defendant was planning on meeting up with three of his friends who would later witness, and be feet away from, the murder.' The court was told that Hartle and his friends arranged to meet Mr Smedley who arrived at the scene on an electric scooter and sold them cannabis before the fatal attack. Mr Langdale continued: 'It was agreed to meet him at a bus stop on Heanor Road, Ilkeston, and so the defendant and his three mates are captured on CCTV shortly after 8pm going to meet the deceased. 'This defendant deliberately hangs back at the back of the group, whilst the others are chatting with Noah and he gives them the cannabis. 'All seemingly, in these matters of seconds, are in good spirits - there is no animosity. 'This defendant will pull his balaclava down over his face, he moves forward in the group to get closer to Noah and reaches into the back of his tracksuit. 'Hartle immediately takes one stride forward and in the same motion thrusts the knife forward and through Noah's heart.' The jury heard that Hartle and his friends ran from the scene leaving Mr Smedley 'staggering and bleeding profusely'. The knife penetrated the right ventricle of Mr Smedley's heart and his left lung causing internal bleeding and his lung to collapse, the prosecutor said. Mr Langdale told the court: 'The defendant raises the idea of self-defence claiming to the police he had recently been threatened by others with knives. As a result of that he decided to take this knife out. 'The Crown say this is an entirely false account, instead it was the defendant who routinely carried a Rambo knife... and did so for the kudos and bravado.' The prosecutor said Hartle carried the weapon to show others he was a 'big man'. Jurors heard the defendant, of Station Road in Stanley, Derbyshire, pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article in a public place but denies murder. CCTV of the group was shown to the jury, including the moment Mr Smedley was fatally stabbed with a knife described to be 'eight to nine inches' long. The trial, which is expected to last two weeks, continues.
