South Africa Choke Again, Fail To Score 7 Runs In Last Over Of Tri-Series Final
South Africa needed 7 runs from six balls on Saturday (July 26) to win the T20I tri-series final against New Zealand in Harare, but they failed to score seven runs and went on to lose the match by three runs in a dramatic manner. At the end of 19 overs in the run chase, the South African team was cruising at 174/4, and the target was 181 runs.
Just when everyone started thinking that the game was over for New Zealand, Mitchell Santner handed the ball to Matt Henry, and the 33-year-old fast bowler successfully managed to defend seven runs to secure a famous win for his team.
On the first ball of the final over, he bowled a dot ball against dangerman Dewald Brevis and then on the second ball picked up his wicket. Brevis tried to play a big shot against Henry but was caught by Michael Bracewell near the boundary ropes. Brevis faced 16 balls and, with the help of one four and three sixes, scored 31 runs.
On the third ball, Corbin Bosch also tried to play a big shot, but this time Bracewell failed to complete the difficult catch, and the South African all-rounder completed two runs to bring down the equation to 5 needed from 3 balls.
On the fourth ball, Bosch ran one run to bring George Linde back on strike.
On the fifth ball, when South Africa needed 4 runs to win from two balls, Linde tried to play a big shot down the ground, but Daryl Mitchell completed a super diving catch to stun South African fans.
Linde's wicket on the penultimate ball of the run chase left South Africa needing a boundary on the last ball, but Senuran Muthusamy failed to score any runs.
The clip of the final over by Henry was shared on X by FanCode, and within no time, the video went viral on the internet.

President Murmu congratulates Divya Deshmukh for World Cup success
New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) President Droupadi Murmu on Monday congratulated chess player Divya Deshmukh for winning the FIDE Women's World Cup in Georgia, saying the youngster's achievement underlines the abundance of talent in the country. Deshmukh achieved the feat with a tie-break win over seasoned compatriot Koneru Humpy. 'My heartiest congratulations to Divya Deshmukh who has become the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women's World Cup, that too, at a very young age of nineteen. Koneru Humpy being the runner up, both the finalists of the chess world championship were from India. This underlines the abundance of talent in our country, especially among women," the President wrote on X. The victory not just earned the 19-year-old the prestigious title, but also made her a Grandmaster, something which looked improbable when she started the tournament. Murmu conveyed deep appreciation to Humpy for sustaining excellence throughout her illustrious career. 'I am sure that both these women champions will continue to bring greater glories and inspire our youth," she added. PTI AKV AT AT Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Washington Sundar's Father Accuses India Selectors Of Bias: 'Only My Son...'
Last Updated: Washington Sundar's father has accused Indian selectors of bias and favoritism despite his son's consistent performances. All-rounder Washington Sundar's father, Mr. Mani Sundar, has accused Indian selectors of bias and favoritism against his son. He believes that, unlike other players who 'get regular chances', only Washington gets dropped even after good performances, while also missing selections when he deserves to play. The comments come soon after Sundar's match-saving century at Old Trafford. He came to bat at a time when the team had lost two set batters in KL Rahul and Shubman Gill in quick succession, on a tricky pitch, with England still threatening an innings defeat on the final day. He smashed 101 off 206 balls, in an unbeaten 203-run stand alongside Ravindra Jadeja to see off over three hours of play, forcing England to offer a draw. 'Washington has been doing very well consistently," Mr. Sundar said in an interview with The Times of India. 'However, people tend to avoid and forget his performances. Other players get regular chances, only my son doesn't get them. Washington should consistently bat at number five like he did in the second innings of the fourth Test and get five to ten straight chances. My son was surprisingly not picked for the first Test against England. The selectors should watch his performances," he added. 'My son gets dropped even if he fails in just one or two matches. It is not fair. Washington scored an unbeaten 85 on a rank turner in Chennai against England back in 2021 and 96* against the same opposition in Ahmedabad during the same year. He would have been dropped even if those two knocks had ended up in centuries. Has this kind of an approach been maintained for any other Indian cricketer? He has become very strong after all this and the result is the performance which people are witnessing now," the senior Sundar said. Sundar got picked in all three Tests after the first. Though his batting returns remained sub-par in the first two, he was excellent with the ball, including with a brilliant four-wicket haul at Lord's in the third match. 'Even his IPL team didn't give him regular chances": Senior Sundar Mr. Sundar also took a dig at the Gujarat Titans for not giving him regular chances — he played just six of the team's 15 matches. 'Even his current team (GT) don't give him regular chances. He showcased his calibre in the IPL 2025 Eliminator against Mumbai Indians (MI), smashing 48 off 24 balls. Look at the way Yashasvi Jaiswal has been backed by RR. Washington hasn't been able to enjoy a consistent run even in case of domestic cricket," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
