Gorgeous Scottish golf club offers preview play of new Tom Doak-designed golf course

USA Today11-07-2025
Old Petty – the new 18-hole links layout designed by architect Tom Doak with longtime associate Clyde Johnson serving as project lead – will open for two months of preview starting August 1 at Cabot Highlands in Inverness, Scotland. The course is slated to fully open in the spring of 2026.
Old Petty – named for an old church adjacent to the property – joins Castle Stuart Golf Links on the property, which the Canadian-based Cabot acquired in 2022. The original Castle Stuart layout was designed by Gil Hanse and Mark Parsinen, and that layout is ranked by Golfweek's Best as the No. 6 modern course in Great Britain and Ireland. It also ranks No. 48 among all courses outside the United States.
The walking-only preview play on Old Petty ends Sept. 30 and is open to anyone with an existing tee time on the original Castle Stuart course. The greens fee for preview play is 190 pounds (Or about $255 U.S.), compared to 330 pounds ($445 U.S.) to play the original course. Bookings for rounds in 2026 on Old Petty will open this year.
'Old Petty, guided by the vision of Tom Doak, will be a remarkable addition to the Highlands' golfing landscape,' Cabot founder Ben Cowan-Dewar said in a media release announcing the preview play dates. 'Its design will harmonize beautifully with the natural surroundings, truly elevating the land it occupies. ...
'Our goal is to create unforgettable memories in magical places, and there are few places in the world more awe-inspiring than the Scottish Highlands.'

World's tallest teen, 7-foot-9 center Olivier Rioux, tries playing football at Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The world's tallest teenager is trying his hand — his reach, really — at football. Florida basketball player Olivier Rioux, a 7-foot-9 center who played for the Under-19 Canadian national team this summer, recently worked out for the Gators' football team. Rioux donned an orange helmet and took snaps on special teams, with Florida assistant coaches hoping his massive wingspan might be a difference maker when it comes to blocking field goals and extra points. 'I like the idea,' Gators basketball coach Todd Golden said during a booster event Thursday evening. 'I give them credit for trying it.' There was one issue: The 305-pound Rioux has an 11-inch vertical, so even with his extra-long reach, he was unable to block any kicks during the workout. 'They were a little disappointed,' Golden said. No worries. Rioux can simply stick to his full-time gig with the hoops team. After redshirting as a true freshman last season, he's expected to get on the court in limited capacity this fall. He's unlikely to play much considering the defending national champions return their entire frontcourt, but he should at least get on the court in garbage time. Golden already has considered using him to guard inbound passes, something Rioux did to perfection just before halftime against the United States in the FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland earlier this month. Rioux forced an errant pass that led to a turnover and a 3-pointer just before halftime. Rioux's unusual height landed him in the Guinness World Records a few years ago and he has become a walking viral video at Florida. While coaches and teammates climbed a ladder to cut pieces of the nets after the Gators won the Southeastern Conference Tournament, Rioux was able to do it while standing flat-footed. Long writes for the Associated Press.

Bouchard to open final tournament against Arango at National Bank Open in Montreal

MONTREAL - Eugenie Bouchard's final tennis tournament will begin against Colombia's Emiliana Arango at the National Bank Open. Bouchard, who reached No. 5 in the WTA rankings in a breakout 2014 season, announced she will retire at the end of her hometown event. The 31-year-old from Westmount, Que., made it to the Wimbledon women's final in 2014, losing to Petra Kvitova in straight sets. She became the first Canadian woman in the open era to reach a Grand Slam singles final. Bouchard received a main-draw wild card to the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal, which began play with qualifying Saturday. This year's edition features a revamped 12-day, 96-player format. The top 32 seeds, led by world No. 2 Coco Gauff, received byes to the second round. A record eight Canadians are in the main draw. That number could increase with five others playing in qualifying. Rising star Victoria Mboko of Toronto takes on Australia's Kimberly Birrell in first-round action. Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., who won the tournament in Toronto in 2019, faces a tough opening matchup against Czechia's Barbora Krejcikova, a two-time Grand Slam champion. Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que. — the top-ranked Canadian at 36th in the world — meets American Maya Joint. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 26, 2025.
