QB Nathan Rourke returns to lead Lions against Alouettes
Quarterback Nathan Rourke will return from a two-game absence due to an oblique injury when he guides the BC Lions into Montreal to face the Alouettes on Saturday.
Rourke got off to a fast start by throwing for 573 yards and four touchdowns while adding 11 carries for 112 yards in two games. Unfortunately for the Lions (1-3), they followed a 1-1 start by losing both games with 'Kid Canada' on the sideline and backup Jeremiah Masoli under center.
'Nathan will start for us. Nathan will go,' Lions head coach Buck Pierce said Thursday. 'He's looked good all week. He's responded better each and every day (in practice), which is the positive thing.'
While Rourke is returning, Montreal (3-1) will be without quarterback Davis Alexander for second straight week due to a left hamstring injury.
McLeod Bethel-Thompson will get the nod after completing 24 of 41 passes for 203 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the Alouettes' 35-17 loss last Sunday at Hamilton. The 37-year-old also mishandled a late-game snap that turned into a touchdown for the Tiger-Cats.
'That was a night I wish hadn't happened,' Bethel-Thompson said, per the Montreal Gazette. 'I'll take the good from it and know there's better football ahead to be played. I'm excited to show what I can do; what we can do as an offense. When we put it all together we're very, very dangerous.
'I was frustrated (against Hamilton). Any time you have an offensive performance like that you're going to be frustrated. I wasn't happy with that, wasn't happy with my performance. Our performance. It's never fun to lose. You put the work in and trust the bounces will go your way. I'll have to come back with a bigger and stronger mindset.'
Alouettes head coach Jason Maas said Alexander likely will be back after the team returns from a bye week to host the Toronto Argonauts on July 17.
Montreal signed veteran wide receiver Alexander Hollins on Tuesday. He was released by the Edmonton Elks and previously spent three seasons with the Lions, including a stellar campaign as a CFL West All-Star in 2023.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Josh Naylor hit a two-run homer against his original team and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat San Diego 6-3 on Monday night after Padres slugger Manny Machado got his 2,000th career hit. Machado hit a hard shot off the glove of diving shortstop Geraldo Perdomo leading off the fourth inning and received a standing ovation. Machado, whose milestone hit came off starter Zac Gallen, became the fifth active player and 297th overall to reach 2,000 hits. Machado's third hit of the night was a homer off Kyle Backhus leading off the eighth, his 15th of the season and 357th of his career. The All-Star slugger also had a single in the first. Machado grounded into a game-ending double play against Kevin Ginkel, who earned his second save. Yu Darvish (0-1) made his season debut for the Padres after being sidelined with right elbow inflammation since spring training. After producing sacrifice bunts in his first two plate appearances, Rocchio broke a 4-all tie by drilling an 0-2 slider from Astros reliever Steven Okert over the outstretched glove of Houston third baseman Isaac Paredes. Angel Martinez and Bo Naylor scored to provide the Guardians a 6-4 advantage. The Astros, who rallied from a four-run deficit with homers by Taylor Trammell and Paredes in the bottom of the fifth, sliced the Guardians' two-run margin in half when Victor Caratini socked a solo homer to right field with two outs in the sixth off Guardians reliever Matt Festa (2-2). Schanuel walks with bases loaded in 9th to lift Angels over Rangers 6-5
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Nolan Schanuel drew a bases-loaded walk from Hoby Milner in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 6-5 win over the Texas Rangers on Monday night. Travis d'Arnaud hit an early two-run homer off Texas starter Jacob deGrom and finished with three RBIs. Corey Seager launched a two-run shot off Yusei Kikuchi to put the Rangers ahead 2-0 two batters into the game. Josh Smith had an RBI double for Texas that tied it at 5 in the eighth. Luis Rengifo doubled off Rangers reliever Chris Martin (0-5) to open the ninth and went to third on Kevin Newman's one-out single to left field. Zach Neto was intentionally walked to load the bases. Texas manager Bruce Bochy summoned Milner for a lefty-lefty matchup with Schanuel, who fought back from an 0-2 count before taking a 3-2 changeup below the strike zone for his second career walk-off RBI. The Angels turned a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 lead in the sixth when Rengifo singled with two outs, d'Arnaud hit an RBI double and LaMonte Wade Jr. followed with a pinch-hit RBI single. But the Rangers tied it against reliever Sam Bachman with two outs in the eighth. An anticipated pitchers' duel between All-Star starters didn't materialize, as deGrom gave up three runs and five hits in five innings while Kikuchi allowed four runs and six hits in five innings.
