Tripura students' body fights for Kokborok
Hundreds of TSF and Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) activists gathered at several parts of Agartala, calling for the immediate recognition of the Roman script as Kokborok's official writing system and postponement of the Class 10 and 12 Kokborok exams until the issue is resolved.
The controversy over script reignited last year, when TBSE (State board) chief Dr Dhananjoy Gonchoudhury instructed all the examination center to permit only the Bengali script for writing Kokborok.
TSF in-charge and YTF General Secretary James Debbarmacritisisedthe State Government for consistently ignoring the demands of the indigenous people for over five decades and failing to respect the linguistic preferences of the community.
Kokborok serves as the lingua franca amongst the tribes of Tripura. To maintain this linguistic balance, the language must be accessible in the script that is most widely used. A survey conducted in 2019-2020 by the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Tripura, found that only 6 out of 6649 students chose the Bengali script. Similarly, a 2021-2022 survey found that just 4 out of 9147 students used the same, showing that 98% preferred the Roman script. These findings highlight the need to implement the Roman scripture for Kokborok to protect students' rights, promote literacy, and preserve Tripura's linguistic and cultural heritage.

Amit Shah Meets Top West Bengal BJP Leaders To Discuss 2026 Poll Strategy
New Delhi: Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday took stock of the political situation in West Bengal in a meeting with key BJP leaders of the state, including its president Samik Bhattacharya and national general secretary in-charge Sunil Bansal, as the party steps up its preparation for the assembly polls next year. Mr Bhattacharya said the prevailing political situation and emerging issues were discussed in the meeting, but did not elaborate. Asked about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which the Election Commission has suggested will be rolled out in other states after Bihar and is being bitterly resisted by opposition parties, he said the next year's polls will be held on a "flawless voters list". Trinamool Congress president and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly opposed SIR, alleging that the EC is acting at the behest of the BJP and the drive could be a backroom tactic to implement the National Register of Citizens. The BJP has pushed for an SIR in the state, claiming that a large number of infiltrators have become voters due to the patronage of the TMC. A BJP leader said the road map for the party's preparation for the polls, which is likely to be held in March-April next year, was discussed in the meeting that was also attended by Mangal Pandey, a Bihar government minister and another in-charge for West Bengal, and co-incharge Amit Malviya. Ms Banerjee has also been attacking the BJP for its administration's alleged targeting of Bengali-speaking migrants in the drive against infiltrators, as her party seeks to paint its main rival as hostile to the state's social and cultural milieu. The BJP has, in turn, accused her of protecting infiltrators due to her "vote bank" politics.

Cong MLA to join AGP before '26 polls
1 2 Silchar: In a significant development ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, Congress MLA from Karimganj South and former minister Siddeque Ahmed has announced his decision to join the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a member of BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Ahmed said he held discussions with senior AGP leaders, including party president Atul Bora. "I have talked to the AGP leadership and finalised my decision to join the party. The Congress has no future in Assam under the current leadership," Ahmed added. Congress had suspended its Ahmed from the primary membership of the party in Apr, 2022 after he deliberately disobeyed the three-line whip issued by the party for the Rajya Sabha poll. A four-time MLA (one each from Samata Party and as Independent and two times as Congress) from the minority-dominated constituency, Ahmed has been a prominent face of Congress in the Barak Valley. He had earlier served as a cabinet minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led govt. Since his suspension from the party, Ahmed publicly criticised the functioning of the Congress in the state, but had not formally indicated any plans of switching allegiance — until now. Taking a swipe at Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, Ahmed said, "Congress under Gaurav Gogoi can't win the next Assembly elections. The party's performance in the last panchayat polls was a disaster. People have lost faith in the party." He added that several of his supporters and grassroots workers from Sribhumi district would also join the AGP in the coming days. "The AGP still commands respect among the people of Assam. My supporters and I will strengthen the NDA to ensure stability and development in the state," he the AGP leadership has not officially confirmed the date of Ahmed's induction, party insiders indicated that a formal joining ceremony may take place in Guwahati later this month. Ahmed's defection is being seen as a blow to the Congress in Barak Valley, a region where the party has traditionally held influence. With this move, the AGP also hopes to expand its footprint in the Bengali-speaking areas of southern Assam.
