'Why don't AFC Bournemouth sponsor the air festival?'

Yahoo8 hours ago
Enviously looking across the bay from Bournemouth beach at another spectacular display by the Red Arrows at Swanage we too wondered why BCP can no longer afford anything as a summer highlight (Martin Thomas in Letters)?
In two weeks time Eastbourne hosts an International Airshow with Red Arrows headlining on each of the four days - all cost neutral for the council and carbon compensated, they say.
How do they do it and we can't in Bournemouth?
As an extra plus we have an excellent airport with all facilities within minutes of our extensive beach display area and used by the Reds for other displays several times a year.
Our remaining local bright spot must be having our Premier League football team in the heart of the town. I'm sure BCP Council is working closely with the football club in the exciting development of the Cherries stadium.
As a keen fan pointed out that in the financial world of Premier League football sponsoring an airshow must rate as fairly small change?
How about an AFC Bournemouth Air Festival? We live in hope!

Train services axed because of dry soil

A train timetable has been cut because soil along the route is too dry. South Western Railway (SWR) said it has 'no alternative' but to run reduced services from London Waterloo to Devon. This is because a lack of moisture in clay soil embankments has disturbed track levels, preventing trains from safely travelling at full speed. This year saw the second driest spring on record for England, while summer rainfall has been just below average across the UK. SWR said the dry conditions have removed moisture from embankments between Gillingham in Dorset and Axminster in Devon, causing them to shrink. This has disturbed the track sitting above these embankments, so the speed limit for trains on a 12-mile stretch has been cut from 85mph to 40mph. From August 11 until further notice there will only be one train every two hours from London Waterloo to Exeter St Davids, Devon – reduced from one per hour – which will take approximately one hour longer than usual. One train per hour will operate from London Waterloo to Yeovil Junction, Somerset, with journey times extended by around 25 minutes. SWR warned that dry conditions are 'set to continue', so further speed restrictions 'may be required'. Attempting to stabilise the track now would 'only provide a short-lived fix as the soil continues to move', it added. SWR chief operating officer Stuart Meek said: 'We are very sorry for the disruption that customers will experience due to this change, as we know just how important the West of England line is to the communities it serves. 'We have not taken this decision lightly and we recognise the impact that it will have on customers west of Yeovil in particular. 'However, to continue operating a safe and reliable service, we have no alternative but to introduce a reduced timetable. 'We always aim to minimise disruption and so, together with our colleagues at Network Rail, we will carefully monitor train performance and work hard to give customers a service that they can rely on. 'We encourage customers to plan ahead via our website and allow extra time to complete their journeys.' Network Rail operations director Tom Desmond said: 'The safety of our customers is our number one priority, which is why we must impose these speed restrictions between Gillingham and Axminster. 'We want to give customers the longest notice possible of timetable changes, and following a comprehensive analysis of ground and track conditions, we know that we must make changes in the next two weeks. 'We have worked closely with our colleagues at South Western Railway to understand the impact of the speed restrictions, and we will regularly review conditions in order to restore the normal timetable as soon as possible.' The amended timetable will restore services to Crewkerne, Somerset which has been served by buses since July 28 because of dried out embankments. SWR became the first operator brought into public ownership by the Labour Government in May.

Everton in advanced talks to sign Southampton winger Tyler Dibling

Everton are in advanced talks with Southampton over a summer deal for attacker Tyler Dibling, according to one renowned Toffees insider on X. The Saints have given the 19-year-old permission to hold talks with Everton over personal terms ahead of a potential move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium club, and the deal could be worth a little over £35 million. The Toffees have been trying to sign Dibling for a while since Southampton got relegated, and they had their £27m bid rejected last week, but they are now closing in on a deal from the look of things. The reliable Everton insider (followed by the likes of Alan Myers, Fabrizio Romano, Jason Burt and Christopher Beesley on social media) reported via X on Monday afternoon that talks are ongoing between both clubs. The winger could become the fourth summer arrival at the Merseyside club after Thierno Barry, Adam Aznou and Mark Travers. Southampton had insisted they wanted over £100m for Dibling amid interest from the Toffees, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Bayern Munich. However, they have had to settle for a little over a third of that and Everton will be glad to have pipped fierce competition to his services. The versatile Dibling can play as a right winger, a striker, a central midfielder and behind a striker, and manager David Moyes could do with such a talented player within his ranks. He weighed in with four goals and three assists in 38 appearances across all competitions last term, and he has what it takes to become one of the best attackers in the Premier League under the tutelage of the Everton boss. The Toffees are desperate to quickly wrap up more deals in the final month of the summer transfer window and have also approached Chelsea for English midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Both clubs are in talks over a permanent transfer, and an agreement could be reached in the coming days as the Stamford Bridge club want to sell the former Leicester City star.

Watch: LPGA's Mimi Rhodes makes bank-in hole-in-one

Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Mimi Rhodes swept her 8-iron and lofted a shot onto the green before tapping Steph Kyriacou's ball for a unique hole-in-one at the 2025 AIG Women's Open. The sequence occurred on hole No. 5 at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club on Sunday in Porthcawl, Wales. Rhodes tied for 19th at the final major of the LPGA Tour season. "I wasn't expecting it to go in, so I just picked up my tee and I heard everyone going crazy, extra louder than usual, so I knew something had happened," Rhodes told reporters. "Then we just walked up to the green and it was in the hole. "I had no idea it hit Steph's ball until I just saw the video, so that's unbelievable." Rhodes, ranked No. 93 in the world, made par on her first three holes of the final round. She carded a bogey on No. 4 before walking up to the tee box on the 184-yard fifth hole. She kept her head down before smacking her club face into the ball, sending it high over the fairway and hitting the green. The ball bounced several times before it hit Kyriacou's ball, bounced right and fell in the hole. "Did that go in" Rhodes asked, before hugging her caddie. Rhodes went on to make par on Nos. 6 and 7. She carded another bogey on No. 8, but birdied No. 9 to carry a score of 1-under into the back nine. She made bogey three times and birdie once over her final nine holes to finish 2-over on the day and 1-under for the tournament. Miyu Yamashita, who was 2-under through her final 18 holes, finished 11-under to win the first major title of her career. Minamim Katsu and Charley Hull tied for second at 9-under. Kyriacou, who also nearly aced No. 5 in the final round, made a hole-in-one on No. 8 during the second round of the tournament. She was 1-under over her final 18 holes and tied for eighth overall at 6-under.
