Julian McMahon's death is a sad, dramatic end to a magnetic talent, whose star was on the rise again

The Guardian4 hours ago
The Australian-American actor Julian McMahon, who has died from cancer aged 56, had a long and accomplished career. Like many Australian actors, it began with a soap opera – McMahon played Ben Lucini in 150 episodes of Home and Away – but he soon broke free to pursue a more ambitious and challenging oeuvre.
McMahon, the son of former prime minister Sir William 'Billy' McMahon, made a name for himself overseas through US television in his 30s. On supernatural drama Charmed he played Cole Turner, a half-human, half-demon assassin turned love interest for one of the witches he was hired to kill. McMahon took to the show's campy tone with aplomb, delivering lines like 'I'm going straight to hell, cause it's got to be a sin to look this good' with a twinkle in his eye.
His next big role was in Ryan Murphy's drama Nip/Tuck, as the arrogant plastic surgeon Dr Christian Troy. In the early 2000s the show made headlines for its frank depiction of nudity and sex – the Guardian described McMahon's character as 'a vagina-seeking missile' – but it also showed his talent for bringing vulnerability to suave but damaged men. It was around this time McMahon became a favourite to succeed Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, but missed out to Daniel Craig – instead he landed the role of Victor Von Doom, AKA Doctor Doom, the supervillain of two Fantastic Four movies.
Over the years McMahon left Hollywood for home to appear in various Australian features – among them Stephan Elliott's raucous 2018 comedy Swinging Safari, in which he played an attender of a 1970s key party, alongside Guy Pearce and his former sister-in-law Kylie Minogue, and the 2012 horror movie Bait, in which he played a robber in a supermarket that's been flooded by a tsunami and monstered by sharks. That film was a big hit overseas, where it became, in less than two weeks, the most successful Australian movie ever released in China. In a full circle move, he recently played the Australian prime minister in Netflix's comedy-mystery The Residence (again opposite Minogue).
Despite his career being well into its third decade, there's a very sad feeling surrounding McMahon's death that his talent has been dramatically cut short; that his star was very much on the rise again. One of his last roles was opposite Nicolas Cage as the villain in Lorcan Finnegan's intensely trippy, sun-scorched thriller The Surfer, which premiered out of competition at last year's Cannes film festival. McMahon played Scally, the leader of a gang of violent hoodlums from a small coastal town who patrol the local beach and harass visitors.
And what a performance it was. Not everybody can hold their own against an actor like Cage, but McMahon pulled it off perfectly, countering the star's off-the-wall style with a seething, magnetic portrait of toxic masculinity – darkly charismatic and creepy as all get-out. In one memorable scene, which you can watch on YouTube, McMahon slurps down a beer and implores Cage to 'drink deep, eat your fill, turn around from this town and never come back'. Throughout the film he projects a layered, paradoxically chummy kind of menace: calm and imperturbable, then, suddenly, explosively violent and unsettling.
McMahon had amazingly bright and burning blue eyes, the colour of the sea. They were even more striking in person – I know because I was lucky enough to meet him on the set of The Surfer in Western Australia, where we chatted about this role and work ethic. On that day, McMahon was philosophical. 'You want to be open to new suggestions, new thoughts, new ideas, and new creativity, wherever that's coming from,' he told me. And he was funny, riffing on the something he may not have missed about his home country – the insects: 'Australian flies just come and sit on your face, and they'll stay there for an hour or two.'
He is survived by his wife, Kelly Paniagua, and his daughter, Madison, from a previous marriage.

Lleyton and Bec Hewitt's daughter Mia looks every inch the rocker in a leopard print faux fur coat as she arrives for a gig in Sydney

Mia Hewitt looked every inch the rocker on Friday when she stepped out for a gig in Sydney. Mia, the daughter of Tennis champ Lleyton Hewitt and former Home and Away star Bec, is one half of the musical duo Father's Favourite. And she certainly looked the part when she was seen hopping out of an Uber on her way to the gig. Mia rugged up against the inclement Sydney weather in a faux leopard print fur coat. The wintry garment was all Mia had for warmth, however, with the burgeoning rocker wearing a thin white silk blouse underneath the coat. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The blouse featured lace embellishments around the neckline and hem. She also put on quite the leggy display in a pair of light brown hotpants that finished at the top of her thigh. Mia finished her rocker look with a pair of knee-high brown leather boots, while accessorising with a vintage-looking brown leather bag that she had slung over her shoulder. She wore her mousy brown locks down for the occasion, letting her hair fall freely down her back. Arriving at the venue with a bandmate, Mia could be seen grabbing a large black guitar case from the trunk of her Uber. She looked laser focused on the task ahead, sporting a stoic expression as she made her way into the venue. Mia's band performed their first gig back in August last year, and her former Home and Away star mum Bec is reportedly keen to steer her in the right musical direction. While she is best known for playing Home and Away fan favourite Hailey Smith Lawson from 1998 to 2005, the actress also had a brief pop career. And she certainly looked the part when she was seen hopping out of an Uber on her way to the gig Mia rugged up against the inclement Sydney weather in a faux leopard print fur coat The wintry garment was all Mia had for warmth, however, with the burgeoning rocker wearing a thin white silk blouse underneath the coat On the back of her television fame, Bec released an eponymous solo album in 2002, and her debut single All Seats Taken hit number 10 on the ARIA chart. Her album, however, was met with mixed reviews and her music career effectively came to an end in 2004 when she parted ways with label Warner Music. A source told New Idea that Bec is keen to ensure that her daughter avoids the pitfalls that can befall new and inexperienced artists. 'Bec knows how to deal with bad people, dodgy managers, and doesn't want Mia making some of the mistakes she made early in her career, like being too optimistic about certain jobs,' they said. The insider added that while music is Mia's current consuming passion, she hasn't ruled out a career in front of the camera, like her actress mum. 'Mia is very savvy. She knows you can't just be good at one thing and that entering the music industry will ultimately see her having to create social media content and putting herself forward,' they said. 'Ultimately, that can lead to more work like modelling, acting and even presenting. 'Bec just wants Mia to be happy and working on a career that is going to sustain her.' It appears that the rockstar lifestyle is also rubbing off on Mia, with the young singer recently spotted smoking cigarette s while hanging out with friends in Sydney's Rose Bay. Mia's parents, tennis champion Lleyton and singer Bec, met on the tennis court for a charity game at the Starlight Cup back in 1999. The couple didn't reconnect until a few years later and finally met up in person in 2005, before getting engaged after a whirlwind romance that lasted six weeks. As well as singer Mia, they also share another daughter Ava, 12, and son Cruz, 15. It was recently claimed that Bec could be planning a return back in front of the cameras years after leaving her role as Hayley Smith Lawson on Home and Away in 2005.

EXCLUSIVE Cassie Ventura finally breaks cover for the first time after shock Diddy verdict

Cassie Ventura has been spotted for the first time since her rap mogul ex-boyfriend Sean 'Diddy' Combs was delivered a shocking verdict in his sex trafficking trial where she testified against him. The singer, 38, was not present as Diddy was sensationally found not guilty of the most serious charges of racketeering and sex trafficking on Wednesday. He was convicted of the lesser charge of transportation to engage in prostitution related to Cassie and another woman. The conviction on the less serious charges carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison, however some legal experts predict he will be sentenced to far less. On Friday night, Cassie appeared to be escaping New York City as she made a dash for her vehicle with an entourage shielding her from the spotlight. Cassie was seen packing up and getting into a car to hightail it out of the Big Apple to kick off the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The popstar remained elusive as she got into the backseat of a vehicle that drove her away. Several of the men in her entourage were holding purple and white umbrellas that advertised Perfect Movers NYC. Cassie, the prosecution's star witness in Diddy's case, went through weeks of gut-wrenching testimony as she alleged that she was coerced into marathon 'freak off' sexual performances during her relationship with the producer. Cassie - who was heavily pregnant as she took the stand and has since given birth - claimed that Combs often beat and abused her during their 11-year relationship. Cassie Ventura, Diddy's popstar ex-girlfriend who testified against him at trial, was seen for the first time - covered by bodyguards - since the shock verdict with umbrellas protecting her as she left New York City During cross-examination, Diddy 's defense attorneys brought up text messages from their relationship where Cassie wrote that she 'loved' the freak offs. The messages undercut the prosecution's argument, and a jury on Wednesday was not swayed by her testimony as it rejected the top charges against Combs in a stunning verdict. While Prosecutor Maurene Comey said the government will seek a 20-year maximum for Combs on charges of transportation to engage in prostitution, his defense tried to fight for less and requested he be freed on a $1 million bond. That request was denied, meaning he must remain in custody until his sentencing hearing on October 3. Cassie has since given birth with her husband Alex Fine. While she was not in attendance when the jury delivered the verdict on Wednesday, her attorney was. Following the verdict on Wednesday, Cassie's attorney praised her for 'paving the way' for the bombshell trial against one of the music industry's most powerful men. 'This entire criminal process started when our client Cassie Ventura had the courage to file her civil complaint in November 2023,' they said. cameras were there as she and an entourage were seen packing up and getting into a car to hightail it out of the Big Apple 'Although the jury did not find Combs guilty of sex trafficking Cassie beyond a reasonable doubt, she paved the way for a jury to find him guilty of transportation to engage in prostitution.' After Cassie gave her emotional testimony, jurors were forced to watch three videos purported to show her and male prostitutes engaged in the 'freak offs.' A black female juror winced and frowned as the first of the clips was played, and another black female juror moved uncomfortably in her seat and put her head to her hands as she watched the footage. Another of the 'freak off' videos was said to have lasted for over 11 minutes as jurors were forced to watch. A woman moaning could also be heard in the courtroom as the footage was played only for the jurors. However, while the hard-to-watch footage appeared to leave a mark on some jurors, they were not swayed enough to find Combs guilty of sex trafficking Cassie. Text messages shown in court, Cassie was seen texting Combs that she 'loved' the freak offs, and when he asked if she was 'horny', she replied: 'Horny, of course I am.' Cassie's attorneys praised her bravery on Wednesday after the verdict was read, saying she had courageously testified despite her daunting circumstances. 'By coming forward with her experience, Cassie has left an indelible mark on both the entertainment industry and the fight for justice,' her attorney Doug Wigdor said. Wigdor added that Cassie showed 'exemplary courage throughout this trial' and 'brought attention to the realities of powerful men in our orbit and the misconduct that has persisted for decades without repercussion.' 'This case proved that change is long overdue, and we will continue to fight on behalf of survivors,' he concluded. Despite being found not guilty on the most serious counts at his sex trafficking trial, Diddy will spend months awaiting sentencing at a notoriously understaffed and violent Brooklyn jail where the music mogul has lived through nearly ten months of lockdowns and fights. Combs' defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo said in court on Wednesday that Combs had been housed in 'a very difficult part of the MDC' where there have been fights. His lawyer Alexandra Shapiro said in a November 2024 court filing that frequent lockdowns at the facility had impaired Combs' ability to prepare for trial. On Wednesday, Combs' lawyers praised MDC staff, who they said had facilitated their access to him during the trial. 'Despite the terrible conditions at the MDC, I want to thank the good people who work there,' defense lawyer Teny Geragos told reporters after the verdict.

Julian McMahon looked frail in final public appearance four months before shock cancer death at 56

Julian McMahon made his final public appearance early in March, just four months before his shocking death this week at the age of just 56. The Australian-American actor had been secretly battling cancer, his wife Kelly revealed in a heartbreaking statement on Friday. Although he never disclosed his illness to his adoring fans, he was noticeably gaunt and drawn when he surfaced on March 10 for his last red carpet. Julian posed bravely alongside Nicolas Cage at SXSW to promote their new film The Surfer, which had premiered at Cannes the previous year. His blue checked jacket was hanging from his frail frame as he managed a smile for the photographers at the Zach Theatre in Austin, Texas. As news of his death circulated this Friday, Nicolas issued a statement sharing reaction to the 'saddening' loss of 'one of my favorite people.' 'I spent six weeks working with Julian, and he was the most talented of actors,' the National Treasure star said to Deadline. 'Our scenes together on The Surfer were amongst my favorites I have ever participated in, and Julian is one of my favorite people. He was a kind and intelligent man. My love to his family,' added Nicolas. In her statement announcing Julian's death, his widow wrote: 'With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer.' Kelly - whom he married in 2024 - continued by expressing the love Julian had for his fans and those around him and what being an actor meant to him during his life. 'Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible. 'We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. And we wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories, she added in her statement obtained by Deadline. The talented actor was best known for his role as Dr. Christian Troy on the FX series Nip/Tuck. He starred alongside Dylan Walsh who portrayed Sean McNamara in the campy medical drama which ran for six seasons from 2003 to 2010. Although he never disclosed his illness to his adoring fans, he was noticeably gaunt and drawn when he surfaced on March 10 for his last red carpet The star was even nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Television Series in 2004 where he was bested by Ian McShane for his role in HBO series Deadwood. Julian later starred as Jess LaCroix on the CBS series FBI: Most Wanted beginning 2020 but made a surprise exit in March 2022 after three seasons. He previously made his name on Australian television soap opera Home & Away in which he starred as main star Ben Lucini from 1990 to 1991. The actor went on to star as Detective John Grant in American crime drama Profiler from 1996 to 2000. He then won the hearts of many as he portrayed Cole Turner in Charmed seasons 3 through 5 from 2000 to 2003 before returning as a guest for season 7 in 2005. The Sydney, Australia native also had success on the big screen as he starred as iconic supervillain Dr. Doom in two Marvel movies Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer (2007). He also starred alongside Sandra Bullock in 2007 supernatural psychological thriller Premonition. Julian and wife Kelly had been together for 11 years before marrying in a romantic ceremony in Lake Tahoe, a lakeside area on the edge of California and Nevada, in 2014. It was his third marriage. Julian was previously married to model and Baywatch actress Brooke Burns from 1999 to 2001 as they share 25-year-old daughter Madison Elizabeth McMahon together. He also was famously married to Australian singer and TV personality Dannii Minogue from 1994 to 1995. Julian also has ties to the government of Australia as he was the only son of Sir William McMahon, a former Prime Minister of Australia, who served from 1971 to 1972 and held office as the leader of the Liberal Party of Australia. He talked about his childhood in an interview with the Herald Sun in 2018 as he said: 'My Dad... was born in 1908. That's a very different time to what it was when he was raising me. 'He must have gone through a strange misunderstanding of how you were parented in 1908 versus how you parent in 1972; it would have been so conflicting. Also how you be a husband in that period of time would have been different. ' His final role was a bit of a full circle moment as he portrayed the Australian Prime Minister in Netflix murder mystery series The Residence.
