Service restoration underway after Cairo telecom fire, minister tells PM

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Wednesday visited the fire-damaged Ramses Central telecommunications hub to assess the damage and review efforts to restore services disrupted across the country.
The visit came after a blaze late on Monday at the central Cairo building killed four workers and injured at least 22 others, triggering a nationwide disruption of critical services and a sweeping response from authorities.
During the visit, Communications Minister Amr Talaat reported that services were gradually returning to normal after being rerouted through alternative exchanges. He explained that outside the immediate vicinity of the Ramses Central building, internet and landline voice services had been restored, while mobile service quality for all four operators was back to an average of 95% of normal levels.
Talaat also briefed the prime minister on sectoral services, noting that a partial outage in the banking sector had been resolved. He confirmed that the Egyptian Exchange (EGX), which suspended all trading on Tuesday as a precaution, had reopened normally on Wednesday after broker services were stabilised.
The minister added that the subsidised food distribution system and emergency services had been operating largely without interruption.
Madbouly stressed the need to take all necessary measures to confirm the building's structural safety and called for an urgent recovery plan to return the facility to full operation as soon as possible, pending a technical assessment. Before leaving the site, the prime minister thanked the civil defence personnel for their efforts in extinguishing the blaze.
The fire prompted a swift response from Egyptian authorities on Tuesday to contain the fallout. The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) temporarily doubled the daily cash withdrawal limit to 500,000 Egyptian pounds ($10,400) to facilitate transactions amid the disruption.
The victims died from smoke inhalation after being trapped inside the building, authorities said. State-owned operator Telecom Egypt issued a statement mourning the loss of its employees, referring to them as 'martyrs of duty' who remained at their posts 'until the final moments to protect telecom infrastructure.'

The initiative also reflects MOYS's continued commitment to empowering Egyptian youth with the tools and support they need to shape a bright and prosperous future. Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports, stated that Egypt's role as the host of YKF's fourth edition reflects the country's commitment to supporting and empowering youth, positioning them as a key pillar in building the New Republic, under the leadership of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. He emphasized that YKF serves as a key dialogue platform for enhancing young people's knowledge and skills, while expanding their intellectual horizons in innovation, entrepreneurship, and the digital economy. He also praised the fruitful partnership between MBRF and UNDP, which underscores the depth of Arab and international cooperation in youth empowerment and human development. His Excellency Jamal bin Huwaireb, CEO of MBRF, highlighted that the fourth edition of YKF reflects MBRF's longstanding efforts to position the youth as key contributors to ensure a highly innovative and sustainable future. He further stated: 'Through this forum, we aim to foster a proactive culture aimed at enhancing the youths' ability to address future challenges. This can be achieved not only by providing them with the requisite tools, but also by inspiring them to generate solutions and drive social change through the localization and application of knowledge. We are pleased to forge this constructive collaboration with MOYS, further highlighting both entities shared commitment to driving the transition towards an inclusive knowledge economy, one that opens new avenues for Arab youth to become leaders of development and pillars of progress.' 'As the world rapidly transitions towards a knowledge-based economy, empowering youth and enhancing their knowledge and skills has become an essential priority. Egyptian youth possess the ambition and innovation required to become key partners in advancing the country's development. In close partnership with the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, through the Knowledge Project and UNDP's programmes in Egypt, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen youth capacities and expand their horizons,' said Mr. Ghimar Deeb, Acting Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Egypt. 'Through a range of initiatives, UNDP Egypt equips young people with critical skills in areas such as digital transformation, entrepreneurship, and the green economy, ensuring their active and meaningful contribution to sustainable development.' YKF's agenda will feature a rich lineup of impactful panel discussions and interactive dialogues on key topics related to public and development policies in the age of the knowledge economy. YKF will conclude with a youth open dialogue, providing a platform for them to share the challenges they face and their aspirations for the future. This will serve as a safe space for the youth to share their ideas, catalyzing the creation of a knowledge-based Arab society grounded in the energy and potential of its youth. It will further reinforce a culture of dialogue, openness and lifelong learning, reflecting both parties' commitment to strengthening knowledge cooperation among Arab nations, while presenting an effective model for youth empowerment as well as creating a positive impact across all sectors and shaping a prosperous and progressive future.

Egypt values President Trump's seriousness in resolving conflicts and ending wars: El-Sisi - Foreign Affairs

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi stated on Tuesday that "Egypt values the recent statement by President Donald Trump, which demonstrates the seriousness of the US in exerting efforts to resolve conflicts and end wars." In a post on his official Facebook page, President El-Sisi added: "Egypt reaffirms its confidence in President Trump's ability to address complex challenges and to advance peace, stability, and security across the globe, whether in Ukraine, the Palestinian territory, or Africa." The Egyptian president added that "Egypt also appreciates President Trump's keenness on reaching a just agreement that safeguards the interests of all parties regarding the Ethiopian Dam, as well as his recognition of the Nile as a source of life for Egypt." On Monday, following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence in a rapid resolution to the decade-old dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). 'I think if I am Egypt, I want to have water in the Nile, and we are working on that,' Trump said. He described the dam as 'closing up water going to the Nile,' which Egypt depends on for 97 percent of its water. Trump added, 'I think the United States funded the dam. I do not know why they didn't solve the problem before they built the dam. But it is nice when the Nile River has water.' Calling the Nile 'a very important source of income and life,' Trump said, 'to take that away is pretty incredible. But we think we are going to have that solved very quickly.' For nearly a decade, downstream Nile countries Egypt and Sudan have called on Ethiopia to sign a legally binding agreement regarding the filling and operation of the GERD to safeguard their water rights, but to no avail. Cairo has repeatedly called on the international community, including the US, to pressure Ethiopia to abstain from unilateral actions on the GERD and respect the country's water shares in the Nile River. As for Gaza, on Sunday, President Donald Trump told reporters that he hopes to see progress in the next week in ceasefire talks, which are being mediated by the US, Egypt, and Qatar in Doha. "Gaza -- we are talking and hopefully we're going to get that straightened out over the next week," Trump said, echoing similarly optimistic comments he made on 4 July. Over the past 18 months, Egypt has long called on the US and Western powers to pressure Tel Aviv to end its genocidal war on the Strip. In conclusion, President El-Sisi posted: "Egypt reaffirms its support for President Trump's vision of establishing just peace, security, and stability for all countries in the region and around the world."
