Diogo Jota's distraught family joined by footballing stars for heart-wrenching funeral days after car crash
Dozens of stars and high-profile figures from across the footballing world arrived for a sombre service in Gondomar, near Porto, tears flowing as they bade goodbye to the brothers. The service took place in the same church where Jota was married just 11 days earlier.
Jota, 28, a father of three, died alongside Andre Silva, 25, when their Lamborghini flew off the side of the A-52 road in northwestern Spain and erupted in flames on Thursday following a suspected tyre blow out.
Footballing stars, legends and agents joined Jota's visibly devastated family and his wife, Rute Cardoso, for the service. Ms Cardoso cut a distraught figure, weeping as she followed behind her late husband's coffin as it was carried into the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and left-back Andy Robertson arrived with football shirt-shaped wreaths with Jota's Number 20 on the back, followed closely by manager Arne Slot and other players from the club including Conor Bradley, Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones, Darwin Nunez and Joe Gomez. Former players Jordan Henderson and James Milner also attended.
Premier League stars including Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva of Manchester City, Joao Felix and Renato Veiga of Chelsea, Nelson Semedo from Wolves, and former Liverpool players Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara also joined for the service.
Ruben Neves, one of Jota's closest friends with whom he played for both Wolves and Portugal, acted as a pallbearer for his coffin after flying in from Florida where he had played a Club World Cup match the night before. Along with his Portuguese teammate Joao Cancelo, Neves was seen sobbing during a moment's silence before Friday's game.
After the service came to an end, Ave Maria was played on the loudspeakers as funeral goers spilled out of the church, embracing tearfully. The coffins were carried out of the church, Ms Cardoso helping lift Jota's casket, leaning her head on it as the procession moved away.
Also in attendance were Porto president Andre Villas-Boas, Portugal manager Roberto Martinez, and former Portugal manager Fernando Santos.
'They are (have been) really sad days, as you can imagine, but today we have shown we are a very large, but close family,' Martinez told media outside the church, in a short interview broadcast on Sky Sports News.
'We are Portugal, and it was essential for us that (with) Andre Silva and Diogo Jota, we are together and we will always be together and their spirit will be with us forever.
'Thank you very much for your messages, for your support and everything that we have received (from) all over the world. It means a lot and today we are all one football family.'
Manchester City and Portugal star Bernardo Silva told Portuguese broadcaster TVI: 'I can't even imagine the pain of the family, of Rute, of the children, of the parents.
'Jota will remain in our hearts forever. He will always be present at all breakfasts, lunches, dinners, national team gatherings, PlayStation or card games.
'It is a very tough episode for all of us, because we spent a lot of time together. The memories I have with him are fantastic. These happy memories will remain; he will be present in every victory.'
The crash occurred after a tyre blowout while the car was overtaking another, Spain's Civil Guard said on Thursday.
The car, reported to be a Lamborghini, left the side of the road and erupted in flames. It is unknown which brother was driving.
Jota was returning to the UK to join pre-season training with Liverpool, after undergoing a minor operation in Portugal. Due to his recent surgery, he had reportedly been advised to take the ferry rather than travel by plane.

A CHAMPIONSHIP football club have admitted their new kit "isn't to everyone's taste" after fans savaged it on social media. Watford revealed their new home kit, manufactured by Kelme for a sixth year running and sponsored by MrQ Casino, to fans last week. The 2025/26 kit is a yellow base accompanied by faded red stripes. However, fans tore into the kit upon seeing a bold blue font for MrQ Casino. One fan on social media remarked: "This is what hell must looks like," while another added: "Can it get any worse." Recognising this, the Hornets took the decision to NOT SHOW the kit their players will wear on the pitch next season in the kit marketing material. Instead, they have shown off the kit in an unbranded state, and made sure every fan is aware they did everything in their power to not have the garish blue colour on it. A statement said: "On-pitch, players' shirts will feature front of shirt sponsorship from MrQ, though, mindful that the new, blue MrQ Casino logo may not reflect the values or preferences of all supporters, the shirt will once again be available to buy unbranded." On social media, the club also commented: "The logo on our new shirt isn't to everyone's taste. "We really liked the previous black logo and we had lots of dialogue over the summer as we wanted to keep it black to complement the new shirt. "But our sponsors were insistent on their rebrand. Switzerland keep Euro 2025 dream alive after Reuteler and Pilgrim knock out Iceland
Iceland will be leaving the party early but, after some initial wobbles, the hosts are still going strong. A quarter-final place beckons for Pia Sundhage's Switzerland after second-half goals from Géraldine Reuteler and Alayah Pilgrim finally settled a nation's nerves. Providing Sundhage's players do not stumble against Finland on Thursday in Geneva they should be on course to finish behind Norway in Group A and on course for a potential last-eight date with Italy or, more probably, Spain. Ultimately the night belonged to Switzerland and their excellent right-wing back Iman Beney in particular but Iceland almost scored inside the first minute when Ingibjörg Sigurdardóttir's half-volley struck the crossbar following her connection with a long throw. Almost immediately, a Swiss counterattack concluded with Julia Stierli shooting wide as heavy rain began lashing down on Berne. After more than a week of glorious Swiss summer sun, the heatwave seemed over and suddenly players from both sides were slipping and sliding on the pitch. From his vantage point on the edge of the technical area, Iceland's manager Thorsteinn Halldórsson was forced to keep wiping raindrops off his glasses. Admittedly Barcelona's Sydney Schertenleib had the crowd on the edge of their seats whenever she ran at Iceland's back line but her final decision persistently let the exciting 18-year-old down. Although another 18-year-old, Manchester City's impressive Beney went close from distance at the end of the first half and it was becoming increasingly apparent that the game's very real intensity was no substitute for the absence of quality. Perhaps attempting to raise the tone, Karólina Vilhjálmsdóttir grazed the top of the crossbar with a 20-yard free-kick at the start of the second half. It was the second time the woodwork had saved Switzerland and seemed to inspire Beney to step up her attacking efforts. What a moment for the increasingly influential Reuteler to advance from her deep-sitting midfield role and create the platform for a swashbuckling Swiss finale, crowned by substitute Pilgrim's fabulous 90th minute finish from just outside the area following the interception of an Icelandic throw.
