Diogo Jota's distraught family joined by footballing stars for heart-wrenching funeral days after car crash

Independenta day ago
The devastated family and friends of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva gathered for a moving funeral on Saturday, two days after their tragic deaths in a car crash in Spain.
Dozens of stars and high-profile figures from across the footballing world arrived for a sombre service in Gondomar, near Porto, tears flowing as they bade goodbye to the brothers. The service took place in the same church where Jota was married just 11 days earlier.
Jota, 28, a father of three, died alongside Andre Silva, 25, when their Lamborghini flew off the side of the A-52 road in northwestern Spain and erupted in flames on Thursday following a suspected tyre blow out.
Footballing stars, legends and agents joined Jota's visibly devastated family and his wife, Rute Cardoso, for the service. Ms Cardoso cut a distraught figure, weeping as she followed behind her late husband's coffin as it was carried into the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and left-back Andy Robertson arrived with football shirt-shaped wreaths with Jota's Number 20 on the back, followed closely by manager Arne Slot and other players from the club including Conor Bradley, Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones, Darwin Nunez and Joe Gomez. Former players Jordan Henderson and James Milner also attended.
Premier League stars including Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva of Manchester City, Joao Felix and Renato Veiga of Chelsea, Nelson Semedo from Wolves, and former Liverpool players Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara also joined for the service.
Ruben Neves, one of Jota's closest friends with whom he played for both Wolves and Portugal, acted as a pallbearer for his coffin after flying in from Florida where he had played a Club World Cup match the night before. Along with his Portuguese teammate Joao Cancelo, Neves was seen sobbing during a moment's silence before Friday's game.
After the service came to an end, Ave Maria was played on the loudspeakers as funeral goers spilled out of the church, embracing tearfully. The coffins were carried out of the church, Ms Cardoso helping lift Jota's casket, leaning her head on it as the procession moved away.
Also in attendance were Porto president Andre Villas-Boas, Portugal manager Roberto Martinez, and former Portugal manager Fernando Santos.
'They are (have been) really sad days, as you can imagine, but today we have shown we are a very large, but close family,' Martinez told media outside the church, in a short interview broadcast on Sky Sports News.
'We are Portugal, and it was essential for us that (with) Andre Silva and Diogo Jota, we are together and we will always be together and their spirit will be with us forever.
'Thank you very much for your messages, for your support and everything that we have received (from) all over the world. It means a lot and today we are all one football family.'
Manchester City and Portugal star Bernardo Silva told Portuguese broadcaster TVI: 'I can't even imagine the pain of the family, of Rute, of the children, of the parents.
'Jota will remain in our hearts forever. He will always be present at all breakfasts, lunches, dinners, national team gatherings, PlayStation or card games.
'It is a very tough episode for all of us, because we spent a lot of time together. The memories I have with him are fantastic. These happy memories will remain; he will be present in every victory.'
The crash occurred after a tyre blowout while the car was overtaking another, Spain's Civil Guard said on Thursday.
The car, reported to be a Lamborghini, left the side of the road and erupted in flames. It is unknown which brother was driving.
Jota was returning to the UK to join pre-season training with Liverpool, after undergoing a minor operation in Portugal. Due to his recent surgery, he had reportedly been advised to take the ferry rather than travel by plane.

Martin Zubimendi is chess prodigy who broke English hearts and marks total transformation of Arsenal's transfer policy

AFTER being a chess sensation at 11, Martin Zubimendi knows the importance of thinking one step ahead at all times. No doubt then, the Spanish midfielder would have been impressed by Arsenal's patient and obsessive approach to signing him from Real Sociedad for £51million — a complex transfer 12 months in the making. 3 3 3 Zubimendi, 26, completed his Emirates switch on a five-year deal — the Gunners' second arrival of the summer after spending £5m on Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Boss Mikel Arteta finally has his No 6 — an aggressive, snarling, ball-winning, midfield dictator who ruthlessly broke English hearts with an influential display in the final of Euro 2024. Away from the pitch, he is quiet, shy, humble and unassuming but in the Spanish province of Gipuzkoa in 2011, he wiped the floor with rivals in an Under-12 chess championship triumph. Zubimendi explained: 'It's a game that requires you to have everything under control. In both sports, the midfield is crucial because it defines the style of play.' Despite Liverpool and Real Madrid threatening to derail the move, it was a transfer Arsenal always had under control. Last summer, Arteta wanted to raid Sociedad for both Zubimendi AND Mikel Merino, sending then sporting director Edu to Marbella to thrash out the ambitious plan. The Spanish club did not want to lose both, instead only letting Merino join in a £32m deal. So Arsenal waited a year before activating his £51m release clause. But Zubimendi could also have joined Arne Slot's Reds a year ago. The midfielder isolated himself at home to consult his family. Join SUN CLUB for the Arsenal Files every Friday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from The Emirates Eventually, Zubimendi rejected Liverpool after being persuaded to remain at his beloved Sociedad by coach Imanol Alguacil and sporting director Roberto Olabe. Fast forward a year and the result was different as Arteta convinced his fellow Basque to make London his new home. Arteta's presentations are well known, leaving most players and agents astounded by the level of detail and care put into them. SunSport understands that Arteta and Zubimendi had an instant connection, sold on the project and vision at the Emirates. Madrid made a late play for Zubimendi in June with new manager Xabi Alonso a big fan — both are represented by the same agent too — but Arsenal were not concerned. From March, the transfer had been fully signed off, allowing Arsenal to press on with other targets for the summer, including a new No 9. The recruitment strategy used by Arsenal and Arteta evaluates players in a tier system, with 'Tier One' meeting all parameters to improve the squad and take the team to the next level. In short, 'world class'. SunSport understands that Zubimendi is the ultimate 'Tier One' signing, one that Arsenal took their time over before making checkmate.

Unimpressed Championship club admit new kit ‘isn't to everyone's taste' as they refuse to post shirt players will wear

A CHAMPIONSHIP football club have admitted their new kit "isn't to everyone's taste" after fans savaged it on social media. Watford revealed their new home kit, manufactured by Kelme for a sixth year running and sponsored by MrQ Casino, to fans last week. The 2025/26 kit is a yellow base accompanied by faded red stripes. However, fans tore into the kit upon seeing a bold blue font for MrQ Casino. One fan on social media remarked: "This is what hell must looks like," while another added: "Can it get any worse." Recognising this, the Hornets took the decision to NOT SHOW the kit their players will wear on the pitch next season in the kit marketing material. Instead, they have shown off the kit in an unbranded state, and made sure every fan is aware they did everything in their power to not have the garish blue colour on it. A statement said: "On-pitch, players' shirts will feature front of shirt sponsorship from MrQ, though, mindful that the new, blue MrQ Casino logo may not reflect the values or preferences of all supporters, the shirt will once again be available to buy unbranded." On social media, the club also commented: "The logo on our new shirt isn't to everyone's taste. "We really liked the previous black logo and we had lots of dialogue over the summer as we wanted to keep it black to complement the new shirt. "But our sponsors were insistent on their rebrand. Some may like it. Some may not. And for those who don't, you can join the Q and get your unbranded shirt." Despite it not being on their marketing material, fans do still have the option to buy the branded shirt in the club's website. I grabbed director of football by the throat and picked him off the floor in front of my team-mates, reveals Troy Deeney The men's adult home shirt is available for £60, the same price as the unbranded version. This is the same for the women's team. MrQ and Watford first partnered together in 2023. The betting brand previously had a black and white logo, which had complemented Watford's bright yellow colours. Reacting on social media, one fan said: "We're supposed to be Hornets... yellow and black." A second said: "The blue logo is just wrong." Another said: "So much better without sponsor." A fourth said: "That blue MrQ branding is also next-level bad." Furthermore, for the first time, the shirt is crafted from recycled polyester, reflecting the club's commitment to sustainability. Last season, Watford finished 14th in the Championship table. The club go into next season with Paulo Pezzolano in charge after being announced as their new manager in May. 3

Switzerland keep Euro 2025 dream alive after Reuteler and Pilgrim knock out Iceland

Iceland will be leaving the party early but, after some initial wobbles, the hosts are still going strong. A quarter-final place beckons for Pia Sundhage's Switzerland after second-half goals from Géraldine Reuteler and Alayah Pilgrim finally settled a nation's nerves. Providing Sundhage's players do not stumble against Finland on Thursday in Geneva they should be on course to finish behind Norway in Group A and on course for a potential last-eight date with Italy or, more probably, Spain. Ultimately the night belonged to Switzerland and their excellent right-wing back Iman Beney in particular but Iceland almost scored inside the first minute when Ingibjörg Sigurdardóttir's half-volley struck the crossbar following her connection with a long throw. Almost immediately, a Swiss counterattack concluded with Julia Stierli shooting wide as heavy rain began lashing down on Berne. After more than a week of glorious Swiss summer sun, the heatwave seemed over and suddenly players from both sides were slipping and sliding on the pitch. From his vantage point on the edge of the technical area, Iceland's manager Thorsteinn Halldórsson was forced to keep wiping raindrops off his glasses. The veteran Sundhage is far too experienced to get wet needlessly and from her proffered vantage point sitting deep in the dugout she watched her team whip a corner in and Svenja Fölmi head goalwards. When the ball hit Glódis Viggósdóttir it flew into the back of the net and, almost everyone bar the 2,000 Iceland fans present in a near 30,000 crowd at a packed Stadion Wankdforf celebrated wildly. Or at least until VAR intervened to correctly disallow that effort for a foul in the preamble, namely Fölmi's overly aggressive block on Viggósdóttir. By now things had turned thoroughly niggly and scrappy. Far too many cheap concessions of possessions, snide fouls, substandard set pieces and disappointing final balls dictated the match failed to fulfil its early potential. Admittedly Barcelona's Sydney Schertenleib had the crowd on the edge of their seats whenever she ran at Iceland's back line but her final decision persistently let the exciting 18-year-old down. Although another 18-year-old, Manchester City's impressive Beney went close from distance at the end of the first half and it was becoming increasingly apparent that the game's very real intensity was no substitute for the absence of quality. Perhaps attempting to raise the tone, Karólina Vilhjálmsdóttir grazed the top of the crossbar with a 20-yard free-kick at the start of the second half. It was the second time the woodwork had saved Switzerland and seemed to inspire Beney to step up her attacking efforts. Sign up to Moving the Goalposts No topic is too small or too big for us to cover as we deliver a twice-weekly roundup of the wonderful world of women's football after newsletter promotion Indeed Beney probably represented Sundhage's biggest goal threat, something she emphasised when directing a looping header fractionally wide as Switzerland assumed increasing dominance. Possession can, of course, be overrated, and, refusing to fold, Iceland continued to attempt to undo the tournament hosts on the counterattack, with those long throws a persistent source of hope. It faded considerably in the 74th minute when Schertenleib emphasised her potential by cueing up a perfectly poised Reuteler to unleash up for a beautifully weighted low shot that would condemn Iceland to an earlier than hoped flight back to Reykjavik. What a moment for the increasingly influential Reuteler to advance from her deep-sitting midfield role and create the platform for a swashbuckling Swiss finale, crowned by substitute Pilgrim's fabulous 90th minute finish from just outside the area following the interception of an Icelandic throw.
