
Here's how you can handle your finances during economic uncertainty
It all adds up to financial uncertainty for a lot of people. Roughly half of US adults say that President Trump's trade policies will increase prices 'a lot,' according to a recent poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
About half of Americans are 'extremely' or 'very' concerned about the possibility of the US economy going into a recession in the next few months.
Matt Watson, CEO of Origin, a financial planning app, says it's a period of uncertainty for everyone, including experts.
'No one has a crystal ball. No one, even the people that do this professionally and have done it very successfully for many years, know what's going to happen,' he said.
If you're worried about how economic uncertainty might affect you, here are some expert recommendations:
The first step to preparing for uncertain financial times is knowing your starting point, Watson said. Look at your budget or your debit card expenses so you can understand how much you spend every month.
'Take stock of where you are across a number of different categories,' Watson said.
Looking at the state of your savings and investments can also provide you with an idea of your overall financial health.
The more nonessential expenses you can pause, the more you can save for an emergency.
'Your choice is really to cut now or cut later, so it's easier to cut now and have a cushion,' Watson said.
If you're having difficulty finding where to cut back, Jim Weil, managing partner at Private Vista, a financial planning firm, recommends that you divide your expenses into three buckets: needs, wants and wishes. Wishes are larger expenses that can be postponed, such as a big vacation.
For the time being, cut back expenses from the wishes section until you feel like your finances are in a good place.
Between news about tariffs and job losses, you might feel your anxiety rising. So, it's important that you protect your mental health while also caring about your finances said Courtney Alev, consumer advocate at Credit Karma. Sometimes, reading too much news that can affect your finances can become overbearing and create more stress than you need.
'It's good practice to stay informed but you don't want to let the news cycle consume you,' Alev said.
If you find yourself feeling high levels of stress or anxiety when it comes to your finances, it's best to contact a professional who can assist you, such as a financial therapist.
If looking for regular mental health services, most health insurance covers some type of mental health assistance. If you don't have health insurance, you can look for sliding-scale therapists around the country.
Rather than worrying too much about the economics of the entire country, Alev recommends that you focus on the aspects of your personal life that you can control in order to feel more confident in case there is a recession.
'Identify any changes that you might need to make to have more of a safety net in place that could give you confidence,' Alev said.
Things you can control include budgeting, creating an emergency fund and cutting unnecessary expenses.
Whether you are worried about your job security or the high prices of goods, it's best that you sit down and reassess your budget to create an emergency fund. An emergency fund can feel unattainable if finances are already difficult, but having even a small amount of cash saved can make the difference, Alev said.
Ideally, your emergency fund should amount to three to six months of expenses.
Weil recommends you start thinking about any special commitments that you might have in the next year or two, such as college tuition or moving. If you are planning for a large financial commitment in the near future, Weil recommends that you plan to build a larger emergency fund.
Alev recommends regularly adjusting your budget to keep your financial goals on track. Monthly budget check-ins can help identify when you are overspending or if your needs change.
'A budget is only as good as it is to help you actually make decisions, so don't be afraid to update and adapt your budget as the months go by,' Alev said.
Many people struggle with debt, whether it's credit card debt or student loan debt, which limits their ability to save. But, if you want to create an emergency fund while also tackling your debt, it will take some prioritisation.
'I would think about different kinds of debt differently,' Weil said, adding that you can place debt in three buckets: short-, medium- and long-term debt.
Weil recommends that you prioritise paying off high-interest debt such as your credit card. By making extra payments or paying over the minimum payment, you will be able to pay it off quicker. Student loan debt and long-term debt such as a mortgage can be tackled with more modest payments while you focus on creating an emergency fund.
If you have credit card debt and you can't make too much progress in paying it down, Alev recommends you try to eliminate or reduce the amount of credit you use.
While the stock market has had some bad days, it's best that you are not reactive to the market. If you have investments, especially in retirement vehicles, it's best not to make rushed decisions, Alev said.
'You really want to try not to panic. It can be unnerving but most likely, you should have time to make that up,' she added. If you're closer to retirement, Alev recommends that you look into more conservative investments.

ByteDance's AI robot system can fold clothes and do housework
TikTok parent company ByteDance has built a robotic system that allows bots to perform household tasks such as folding laundry and cleaning tables. The system uses artificial intelligence (AI) that allows robots to follow language commands and carry out tasks. China, where ByteDance is based, has been developing the technology at lightning speed with the development of its DeepSeek and Manus. According to chip designer Nvidia, robotics is the next phase of AI. That's because while tech companies have been trying to build a general-purpose robot for years, programming robots is difficult. However, with AI, it becomes much easier. What did ByteDance do? ByteDance built a large-scale vision-language-action (VLA) model called GR-3, which allows robots to follow natural language commands and do general tasks. GR-3 can be thought of as the brain of the robot. ByteDance used a robot called ByteMini for the experiment. After GR-3 was inserted into it, the robot could put a shirt on a hanger and place it on a clothing rack. Video by the company also shows the robot picking up household items and placing them in a designated spot. It could differentiate between sizes, successfully following commands to pick up the 'larger plate'. It also completed tasks such as cleaning up the dining table. ByteDance's Seed department, which heads the company's AI research and large language model (LLM) development, said it trained the model with image and text data and then fine-tuned it with data from humans interacting in virtual reality. It was also taught to copy the movements of real robots. ByteDance appears to be increasingly focusing on AI, launching the Seed department in 2023. The new development comes as TikTok is facing another threat of being banned in the US unless the company sells its American assets. US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick reiterated this on Thursday, saying, 'China can have a little piece or ByteDance, the current owner, can keep a little piece'. 'But basically, Americans will have control. Americans will own the technology, and Americans will control the algorithm,' Lutnick told CNBC, adding that if this doesn't happen, 'TikTok is going to go dark, and those decisions are coming very soon'.

AstraZeneca pledges $50bn investment in the US amid 200% tariff fears
AstraZeneca will invest $50 billion (€42.8 bn) in the US by 2030 in a move to expand its R&D and manufacturing there, the firm announced on Monday. This comes as the pharmaceutical giant aims to reach the target of $80 billion (€68.5 bn) in revenue by 2030, with 50% of it hoped to come from the US. The announcement also comes as the Trump administration threatens tariffs of up to 200% on drugs that are produced outside of the US. The new investment announcement is in addition to the $3.5 billion (€3 bn) pledged in November 2024. According to a statement from the company, the US plays a 'critical role' in AstraZeneca's ability 'to launch 20 new medicines by the end of the decade'. What will AstraZeneca produce in the US? As part of the investment, the British-Swedish company plans to build a new multi-billion dollar manufacturing facility in the state of Virginia. This plant will focus on the production of treatments for chronic diseases and is the largest single investment into a facility the company has ever made. '[This] announcement underpins our belief in America's innovation in biopharmaceuticals and our commitment to the millions of patients who need our medicines in America and globally,' Pascal Soriot, Chief Executive Officer at AstraZeneca said in a statement from the company. 'I look forward to partnering with Governor Youngkin and his team to work on our largest single manufacturing investment ever. It reflects the Commonwealth of Virginia's desire to create highly skilled jobs in science and technology, and will strengthen the country's domestic supply chain for medicines.' The site in Virginia will have a particular focus on producing substances which make up AstraZeneca's weight management and metabolic treatment portfolio. As well as the site in Virginia, the investment will help expand facilities and production in Massachusetts, Maryland, California, Indiana and Texas, as well as finding new sites for clinical trials. AstraZeneca already has 19 R&D, manufacturing and commercial sites in the US, and the country is the company's largest market, representing 42% of their revenue. The firm currently employs more than 18,000 people and supports 92,000 jobs across the US. The new investment announcement is expected to create tens of thousands more jobs in the coming years. Howard Lutnick, US Secretary of Commerce, said: 'For decades Americans have been reliant on foreign supply of key pharmaceutical products. President Trump and our nation's new tariff policies are focused on ending this structural weakness. We are proud that AstraZeneca has made the decision to bring substantial pharmaceutical production to our shores. Trump threatens Aeromexico, sparks air conflict with Sheinbaum
The Trump administration imposed new restrictions Saturday on flights from Mexico and threatened to end a longstanding partnership between Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico in response to limits the Mexican government placed on passenger and cargo flights into Mexico City several years ago. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Mexico's actions to force arilines to move out of the main Benito Juarez International Airport to the newer Felipe Angeles International Airport 50 kilometers away violated a trade agreement between the two countries and gave domestic airlines an unfair advantage. "Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg deliberately allowed Mexico to break our bilateral aviation agreement,' Duffy said, referring to the previous president and his transportation secretary. 'That ends today. Let these actions serve as a warning to any country who thinks it can take advantage of the US, our carriers, and our market. America First means fighting for the fundamental principle of fairness.' Mexico is the top foreign destination for Americans with more than 40 million passengers flying there last year. All Mexican passenger, cargo and charter airlines will now be required to submit their schedules to the Transportation Department and seek government approval of their flights until Duffy is satisfied with the way Mexico is treating US airlines. It's not immediately clear how Duffy's actions might affect the broader trade war with Mexico and negotiations over tariffs. A spokesperson for Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum didn't reply immediately to a request for comment. Sheinbaum didn't mention the new restrictions during either of her two speaking events on Saturday. Airlines likely to fight for continued partnership Delta and Aeromexico have been fighting the Transportation Department's efforts to end their partnership that began in 2016 since early last year. The airlines have argued that it's not fair to punish them for the Mexican government's actions, and they said ending their agreement would jeopardize nearly two dozen routes and $800 million in benefits to both countries' economies that come from tourism spending and jobs. 'The US Department of Transportation's tentative proposal to terminate its approval of the strategic and pro-competitive partnership between Delta and Aeromexico would cause significant harm to consumers traveling between the US and Mexico, as well as US jobs, communities, and transborder competition," Delta said in a statement. Aeromexico's press office said it was reviewing the order and intended to present a joint response with Delta in the coming days. But the order terminating approval of the agreement between the airlines wouldn't take effect until October, and the airlines are likely to continue fighting that decision. The airlines said in a previous filing fighting the order that it believes the loss of direct flights would prompt over 140,000 American tourists and nearly 90,000 Mexican tourists not to visit the other country and hurt the economies of both countries with the loss of their spending.
