Government reviews flight safety measures; special inspection of B737-800s extended
CEOs of Jeju Air, Korean Air, Asiana Airlines and other airlines participated in the meeting hosted by the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, where enhanced safety measures established after the tragedy were reviewed. The government plans to hold follow-up inspections to see whether the new measures have been implemented.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation has ordered that airlines perform more thorough safety inspections of flights. The CDSCH, the organization heading the pan-government responses to the fatal crash, is also conducting special inspections on Boeing 737-800 aircrafts, the same model as the ill-fated flight 7C 2216 that crashed and left 179 dead in the recent tragedy.
The inspection period for B737-800s in service was initially slated to wrap up Friday, but has been extended for a week until Jan. 10. Officials will check maintenance levels and the overall operation of the aircrafts. Currently, 101 Boeing 737-800s are being used by Korean airlines predominantly for flights lasting six hours or under.
Jeju Air's current fleet consists mostly of B737-800s. The airline has the most models in the country (39), followed by T'way Air's 27, Jin Air's 19, Eastar Jet's 10, Air Incheon's four, and two operated by Korean Air. Though the relatively older model is still in use, Jeju Air recently inked a deal with Boeing to purchase newer models.
A B737-800 airplane operated by Jeju Air crashed at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province on Sunday after attempting to land without deploying its landing gear. Government investigations are underway to determine the cause, with bird strikes and gear malfunction among possible contributory factors.
Ongoing investigations include sending the plane's flight data recorder to the US-based experts next week, with two investigators of the ministry slated to accompany the device in restoring the data. Data restoration and analysis is expected to take months.

SK On rebrands R&D arm to boost battery innovation
South Korean battery-maker SK On has renamed its core research and development center the "Future Technology Research Institute," strengthening its commitment to innovation-led growth and next-generation battery technologies. The institute, previously the SK On Battery Research Institute, has played a central role in the company's battery development since its early days, including the world's first NCM9 cell with 90 percent nickel content as well as the introduction of Z-folding technology. The newly branded institute will focus on diversifying battery chemistries and formats — including solid-state batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries and prismatic designs — while prioritizing cost competitiveness and product safety as short-term goals. To reduce costs, SK On will advance its cell-to-pack integration and plans to complete lithium iron phosphate and midnickel cell-to-pack development by this year. A pilot dry electrode plant will also be established to cut energy and equipment costs. For safety, the company aims to complete solid-state battery prototypes using polymer-oxide gel electrolytes and complete production by the end of next year. The institute will also develop immersion cooling-based thermal runaway prevention technologies, with progress expected to accelerate following its planned merger with SK Innovation's lubricant subsidiary SK Enmove in November. 'With global competition intensifying and market conditions changing fast, we will grow SK On into a technology-driven company through a clear R&D strategy,' said Park Ki-soo, inaugural head of the institute and former head of R&D at SK On.

Hyundai Motor CEO says tariff deal removed uncertainties in US operations
Hyundai Motor Company CEO Jose Munoz said Thursday that the new tariff agreement between South Korea and the United States removes uncertainties, enabling the business to move forward in predictable frameworks. 'This agreement ensures that the partnership (between Korea and the US) will continue flourishing, with predictable frameworks that benefit workers and communities in both nations,' the CEO wrote in a post on LinkedIn. The remark came hours after Korea and the US reached a new trade agreement imposing a 15 percent tariff on Korean vehicle exports to the US, down from the 25 percent tariff that had been in effect since April 3. He said the new tariff arrangement supports Hyundai Motor Group, the automaker's parent company, in its efforts to strengthen ties between Korea's technology base and the US manufacturing network. "The agreement reinforces Hyundai Motor Group's $21 billion US investment strategy and our commitment to creating more than 100,000 direct and indirect American jobs," he said. 'This framework reinforces our localization strategy while maintaining the seamless collaboration between our Korean design, engineering, and manufacturing teams and our American manufacturing operations." Although Hyundai Motor produced over 200,000 vehicles in the US during the first half of 2025, the higher tariff impacted the business significantly, as more than half of its US sales still rely on imports from Korea. According to the company, the 25 percent tariff led to an estimated 828.2 billion won ($591.7 million) in operational losses during the second quarter, contributing to a 15.8 percent on-year decline in operating profit to 3.6 trillion won. In response to the tariff reduction, Hyundai Motor Group also expressed appreciation on Thursday. 'We extend our deepest gratitude to the government departments and the National Assembly for their dedicated efforts in resolving the tariff issues with the US,' the automaker said. However, the agreement also ends the zero-percent tariff Hyundai had enjoyed under the Korea-US Free Trade Agreement prior to April. As a result, the company has lost its edge over Japanese and European automakers, which had faced a 2.5 percent tariff in the US but are now subject to the same 15 percent rate under their own trade deals. Acknowledging this shift, the group stated that its automakers -- Hyundai Motor and Kia -- plan to mitigate the impact of the new tariff regime through comprehensive innovation initiatives.
