Soccer-Olympique Lyonnais to remain in Ligue 1 after appeal

The Star4 days ago
(Reuters) -Olympique Lyonnais' relegation to Ligue 2 was overturned by the French soccer federation (FFF) on Wednesday after an appeal by the club.
The FFF has imposed a framework for the wage bill and transfer fees in the club's proposed 2025/2026 Ligue 1 budget.
"Olympique Lyonnais welcomes today's decision by the DNCG to keep the club in Ligue 1," Lyon said in a statement.
"Olympique Lyonnais would like to thank the Appeals Committee for recognising the ambition of the club's new management team, which is determined to ensure that the club is managed seriously in the future."
Lyon were demoted by French football's financial watchdog (DNCG) in November due to the poor state of their finances.
The decision was confirmed in June after a meeting between U.S. businessman and club owner John Textor and the DNCG.
Women's football mogul Michele Kang, who owns Lyon's women's team OL Lyonnes, has been appointed president of Olympique Lyonnais, replacing Textor.

Macron condemns US tariffs, urges EU countermeasures by August 1

ISTANBUL: French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed strong disapproval of the United States' decision to impose 30 per cent tariffs on European Union exports, calling for accelerated preparations for credible countermeasures. The move comes as trade tensions escalate ahead of the August 1 deadline. Macron stated on social media platform X that France and the European Commission share deep concerns over the US tariffs, which are set to take effect next month. He emphasised the need for the EU to assert its determination in protecting European interests, including the possibility of deploying anti-coercion measures if negotiations fail. The French leader also reaffirmed support for ongoing talks aimed at reaching a fair agreement before the deadline. He stressed the importance of mutual respect between trade partners, given the interconnected economies of the EU and the US. The dispute stems from former US President Donald Trump's announcement of new tariffs targeting EU and Mexican goods. In response, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged to defend EU interests, including proportionate countermeasures if necessary. - Bernama-Anadolu

Macron's strong disapproval over US tariffs sparks call for countermeasures

ISTANBUL: French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday voiced "strong disapproval" of 30 per cent United States (US) tariffs for EU and called for accelerating the preparation of "credible countermeasures", Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. "Along with the President of the European Commission, France shares the same very strong disapproval at the announcement of horizontal 30 per cent tariffs on EU exports to the United States from August 1st," Macron wrote on X. He reiterated the need for the Commission to "assert" the bloc's "determination" to uphold European interests "resolutely." "In particular, this implies speeding up the preparation of credible countermeasures, by mobilising all the instruments at its disposal, including anti-coercion, if no agreement is reached by August 1st," Macron noted. He further expressed France's "full support" to the negotiations that "will intensify" to reach a mutually acceptable agreement by Aug 1, "reflecting the respect that trading partners like the European Union and the United States owe each other, with their shared interests and integrated value chains." Earlier, Trump announced that the US will impose 30 per cent tariffs on the EU and Mexico starting Aug 1, putting US-EU trade talks at risk, as the bloc had aimed to finalise a comprehensive trade deal this month. In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared separate letters addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, announcing a 30 per cent tariff on goods bound for the US from Europe and Mexico. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen then voiced readiness to work towards an agreement with the US by Aug 1 and vowed to take all necessary steps to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures.

PSG vs Chelsea Club World Cup final preview and key details

EAST RUTHERFORD: The inaugural FIFA Club World Cup reaches its climax as Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea prepare for a high-stakes final at MetLife Stadium. The match, set to kick off at 3:00 PM local time (1900 GMT), promises a thrilling encounter between two of Europe's elite clubs. PSG, fresh off a historic UEFA Champions League triumph, aim to complete an unprecedented trophy sweep. Coach Luis Enrique praised his team's season, calling it 'fantastic' and emphasizing the importance of ending it on a high. The French giants have been dominant, scoring freely against Atletico Madrid, Inter Miami, and Real Madrid en route to the final. Chelsea, meanwhile, enter as underdogs but remain undaunted. Defender Reece James dismissed PSG's favorite status, recalling past finals where favorites faltered. The Blues hope midfielder Moises Caicedo recovers in time from an ankle injury sustained in their semi-final win over Fluminense. The match will be played under scrutiny due to extreme afternoon heat, with Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez labeling the conditions 'very dangerous.' Both teams face a grueling schedule, with PSG playing their 65th game and Chelsea their 64th this season. Financial rewards are substantial, with both finalists guaranteed over $100 million in prize money. For Chelsea, the windfall comes at a crucial time following UEFA sanctions for financial breaches. FIFA president Gianni Infantino hailed the expanded 32-team tournament as a game-changer for club football, declaring it the 'most successful club competition in the world.' The next edition is scheduled for 2029 - AFP
