Media told to be professional, responsible

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor called on media practitioners to carry out their duties with integrity, guided by the principles of professional and responsible journalism. He said the success and dissemination of government policy implementation also depend on the vital role of the media in conveying information clearly and effectively to the public. In the context of state development, he said the Government remains committed to implementing various initiatives that benefit the people and accelerate Sabah's progress through the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan. 'As a sector with close collaboration and ties with the Government, the media also plays a role in delivering information on state government development policies, particularly under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan. 'Therefore, I hope this strategic cooperation will continue to be strengthened and that the good relationship between us will be further enhanced to help the Government disseminate key information to the people regarding the State's development agenda and direction. 'Media reports also assist the Government in understanding what is happening at the grassroots level, including the concerns of the people. Certainly, the Government welcomes such reports and coverage from media practitioners, as a bridge connecting the Government and the people,' he said. His speech was delivered by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. Hajiji expressed hope that the media will continue to play an important role as a trusted source of information, a provider of accurate news and a platform for faster and more precise updates to society. He said the Kinabalu Press Awards, organised by the Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) in collaboration with the State Government and other sponsors, aims to recognise and appreciate the commitment and capabilities of media practitioners in the State. 'This event also serves as an excellent platform to inspire media practitioners to remain motivated, focused and responsible in carrying out their duties transparently and ethically,' he added. In this regard, he said the Government has never overlooked the media's important role in society and continues to support programmes such as the KPA through financial sponsorship contributions. 'The State Government greatly values and understands this need, and in fact, sponsorship support has increased every year. 'I also extend my congratulations to all the winners. Italy boosts legal work visas, as union says policy falls short
ROME: Italy's hard-right government has agreed to issue 500,000 visas for non-EU workers over the next three years, but a top trade union warned Tuesday that only structural change would tackle labour shortages. The government of far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said a total of 497,550 workers would be allowed in over the 2026-2028 period, starting with around 165,000 in 2026. This is up from the 450,000 quota set by Meloni's government for 2023-2025 period -- itself a sharp increase on the 75,700 quota for 2022 and around 70,000 for 2021. Meloni, the leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, has sought to reduce the number of undocumented migrants to Italy. But her government has also increased pathways for legal migration for non-EU workers to tackle labour shortages in an ageing country with a sluggish birth rate. The greatest number of visas over the next three years -- some 267,000 -- will be given for seasonal work in the agricultural and tourism sectors. Italy's main agricultural lobby, Coldiretti, welcomed the new visa plan as an 'important step forward to ensure the availability of workers in the fields, and with it, food production'. But a top official in the CGIL trade union -- Italy's oldest and largest -- said Tuesday the new quotas did not address migration dynamics and labour needs. Maria Grazia Gabrielli pointed to the number of applications that were far lower than the available quotas, with the exception of domestic work. In 2023 and 2024, only 7.5-7.8 percent of the quotas actually resulted in a residence permit, she said in a statement, pointing to their ineffectiveness. Gabrielli criticised the government's policy of prioritising applicants from countries who discourage their nationals from illegally migrating to Italy. A 2023 decree allowed preferential quotas from countries, such as those in North Africa, who help Italy fight human traffickers and conduct media campaigns warning of the dangers of crossing the Mediterranean. She called it a system 'that takes no account whatsoever of the reasons for migration dynamics and the need for a response that does not focus on punitive logic and rewards for some countries'. Italy's foreign worker policy is fraught with loopholes and possibilities for fraud, with criminal gangs exploiting the system and even foreign workers already in Italy applying for visas. The union leader said structural work was needed -- including regularising workers already in Italy -- to help employers struggling to find labour and to try to keep foreign workers out of irregular situations.

China, Sabah pledge closer ties in tourism, culture, development

KOTA KINABALU (July 1): The new Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu, Zhu Xinglong, paid a courtesy call on Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew on Monday. Consul General Zhu said under the strategic guidance of the leaders of China and Malaysia, bilateral relations have reached a historic high, and the prospects for cooperation between the two countries are broad. 'China is Sabah's largest source of international tourists,' he said. The Consul General expressed willingness to work closely with the minister to implement the important consensus reached by the two countries' leaders, and to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between China and Sabah in areas such as governance, civilisational dialogue, cultural industries, tourism and poverty alleviation, in a joint effort to build a high-level strategic China-Malaysia community with a shared future. Liew warmly welcomed Zhu's assumption of office in Sabah and noted that China's rapid development in recent years is remarkable. She expressed her readiness to maintain close communication and coordination with the Consul General, learn from China's governance experience, and expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges between Sabah and China. 'Let us work together to usher in the next 'Golden 50 Years' of China-Malaysia relations,' she added. Over the coming months, the Chamber has planned a series of exchange visits to China — including trips to Chongqing, Yunnan University, Zhengzhou in Henan Province and Xinjiang — to attend economic forums, engage in business matchmaking, and explore cooperative opportunities, with the aim of expanding business prospects and integrating cross-border resources. He also expressed hope that the Chinese Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu would continue leveraging its networks and resources to support the Chamber, assist its members in expanding into the Chinese market, connect with potential partners, and gain access to strategic platforms — ultimately helping Sabah entrepreneurs, particularly the Chinese business community, to grow stronger and enhance their overall competitiveness and visibility. This exchange dinner not only highlighted the Consulate's strong commitment to supporting MCCC Sabah but also injected fresh impetus into strengthening strategic cooperation between China and Malaysia. Both sides agreed on the need to maintain close communication, promote practical cooperation mechanisms, and enable Sabah to play an even more active bridging role under the evolving framework of Malaysia–China relations — working together to achieve more high-quality collaborative outcomes. RON95 subsidy rationalisation in final stages, fiscal reforms urgent amid global volatility, says Amir Hamzah
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — The government is focusing on finalising the details of the RON95 subsidy rationalisation, which will begin in the second half of this year, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. He noted that just as it was with the diesel rationalisation, the goal for the RON95 subsidy rationalisation is to ensure that the government plug leakages and that businesses and the wealthy contribute their fair share. 'This is so that we have the fiscal strength to secure subsidies for the people who genuinely need them. 'The same careful approach applies to the expansion of Sales and Service Tax (SST) — it diversifies revenue and is part of prudent expenditure management,' he said in his keynote address at the Invest Asean-Malaysia Conference 2025 today. Amir Hamzah noted that the government's commitment to fiscal consolidation remained strong as the country had achieved a budget deficit-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio of 4.1 per cent last year, better than the official target of 4.3 per cent. He said that the government is now targeting a 3.8 per cent fiscal deficit for 2025 and is staying consistent with the Public Finance and Responsibility Act 2023 to reduce the deficit to three per cent in the medium term. 'This will be accomplished through revenue-enhancing measures, tax system efficiency and taxpayer compliance. 'This year we are doing the SST expansion and the RON95 subsidy rationalisation, and hopefully that will add a revenue base along the way,' he said, adding that the government is confident of getting the additional RM10 billion revenue from the SST expansion, despite recent additional exemptions. In the meantime, Amir Hamzah emphasised that Budget 2026 and the soon-to-be-tabled 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will focus on being pragmatic, sensible and driving continuity in the nation's progress. 'While it is too early to share details, I can say that it will be yet another effort in securing our economic future, responding where necessary to current economic headwinds and building a fairer, more equitable society,' he said. He added that several other reforms are in the pipeline to support economic growth, build credibility and set governance examples. 'These include the judicial and institutional reform, fiscal and public sector reform, social protection and inclusivity reforms, and digital and innovation-led transformations. 'Current global volatility makes reforms more, not less, urgent. Institutional strengthening, fiscal discipline, and innovation capacity-building are complements to sustainable, resilient economic expansion that is capable of weathering future global disruptions,' he added. — Bernama
