Well, the weather gods didn't exactly co-operate. When one lady from Alabama asked on Sunday, 'Is your winter colder than yesterday?' I told her it can be, but that we really wanted our guests to have the full, four-season experience.

She had a good laugh about that. We have to commend the thousands of people who stayed to the bitter end of the Saturday night Grandstand Show. Major congratulations to everyone who participated in that show in the face of cold and wind. It was the talk of the town Sunday morning, and the Calgary Stampede pulled everything off with flying colours.

One man from New York commented to me, 'We had this great dinner at the Calgary Tower, but when we left, there were people right on the sidewalk shooting up drugs. We were nervous walking back to our hotel.'

Another man from Seattle told me that while walking under the First Street underpass, his family encountered a man defecating on the sidewalk. His remark to me was, 'We've got big problems in Seattle, but I see now that you have them, too.'

A wonderful, long-time Calgarian who is a close friend of mine adopted a phrase years ago that he likes to use. When confronted with an issue or a challenge, he simply says, 'Well, what are you going to do about it?'

Calgary Fire Department says to remain mindful of safety over Canada Day long weekend
Article content Calgarians are full-swing into their long weekend vacation plans, but the Calgary Fire Department asks everyone to remain mindful of their own safety over the next few days. Article content CFD public information officer Carol Henke said anyone at home should be aware of general fire safety after recent events that took place in Calgary. Article content Article content 'Tragically we had a house fire [on Thursday] that took the lives of a father and daughter, so fire prevention is very important,' Henke said. 'The fire is still under investigation so I can't speak on that specifically, but we do know that the most common cause for inside fires is cooking left unattended and cooking with oil.' Article content Article content Handling a grease fire Article content Article content In the event of a grease fire, Henke said it is important to follow a few simple steps to avoid any damages that can occur. Article content 'Put the lid on, turn off the heating element, and leave it,' she said. 'Where we see things go wrong is when people try to carry the burning pot of oil through the house or outside. The oil is hundreds of degrees and can cause severe damage. Article content 'Never put water on it. That will cause an explosion and quickly turn an easily extinguishable fire into a spreading fire.' Article content Homeowners should also take the time to check their fire and carbon monoxide alarms as an added safety measure, familiarize themselves with exits around their home, and develop a proper escape plan. Article content Article content Currently, there is no fire ban in place for Calgary. Henke said residents should always check the City of Calgary's website to see if restrictions change. Article content Article content 'We have had a lot of rain here, so we are good for moisture,' she said. Article content For anyone with a backyard firepit, Henke said to never leave it unattended, adding that firepits require spark guards. She adds that an extinguishing method like a connected hose or a bucket of water should be readily available if needed. Article content 'Only burn clean, dry, seasoned wood,' she said. 'We've responded to fires where people tried to burn yard waste, construction waste, and I even attended a fire years ago where someone tried to burn drywall. Article content 'So, do not burn things that should not be burned in a fire pit because it is a hazard and it creates stinky smoke that's going to be annoying for your neighbours.'

You're thinking it's going to be a nice little float down the river.' Article content Article content Advisories, updates and detailed safety guidelines can all be found on the City of Calgary's website. Article content Calgarians can get stuck with a fine for floating or boating without a life jacket, or while impaired. Article content Article content 'Most people don't realize that what applies to roads and drivers also apply on water,' said Calgary Police Service inspector Kurt Jacobs. Article content 'Please don't get on the river here in unsafe waters and then impair your judgment by alcohol or drugs,' Jacobs said. Article content With paddleboarding becoming increasingly popular on Calgary's rivers, CFD community safety officer Alex Kwan urges users not to use the ankle leash that comes with most boards, or stand-up paddleboard anchors. Article content 'On the river with that current, it becomes a drowning hazard,' Kwan said. 'Any of those things could weigh you down and drag you down.' Article content For inflatable watercrafts, Kwan recommends using something that has multiple air chambers, and ensuring that it's inflated to the proper pressure. Article content Sergeant Mark Smith of Calgary Community Safety said officers will be patrolling the shoreline over the summer, not just for enforcement, but for safety as well. Article content

Calgary airport limiting access to two hours before flight through U.S. customs
Travellers bound across the U.S. border will have to keep their eyes on the clock come travel day; Calgary International Airport will now be denying access through American customs any earlier than two hours before takeoff. In a statement about said changes, the Calgary Airport Authority referenced implementing the metering measures in December 2024, attempting to manage flow 'during specific peak travel times.' The statement further described the time restrictions as being 'used at several major Canadian airports to improve efficiency and minimize bottlenecks during high volume periods, as needed.' No specific period has been described for the new measures, and the changes appear to be indefinite. The shift in timing was officially announced on the airport's blog in mid-May, but a notification announcing the change has since been displayed across the top of the entire website. The red banner coincides with several large-tourism events in Calgary, namely the Rotary International Convention, and the upcoming Calgary Stampede. Passengers are still encouraged to arrive three hours before their flight time, 'to account for travel conditions and to allow sufficient time for check-in with their airline and check their bags,' according to the original announcement post. Should guests make their way through check-in and still have time to spare, the announcement points to the pre-security dining options as ways to wait. Impacts to businesses within the post-security area are as of yet unclear. The airport's statement said they were offering support to businesses on both sides of customs clearance by introducing a pre-ordering method through their online store directory. However, only two of the 13 food and beverage locations in the area after customs currently have the online function available. Neither of those two are any of the several sit-in dining restaurants — like Vino Volo or the Wolfgang Puck Kitchen + Bar — businesses that may be impacted more than others by the constrained timeframes. A July 2024 study in the Journal of Air Transport Management researched the correlation between time and dollars spent within an airport. The study found that 'a 10 per cent increase in dwell time is associated with an increase of 8 per cent and 6 per cent respectively, in food and beverage as well as retail revenues.' According to the airport's 2024 earnings report, non-aeronautical sales were a large driver of the wider 4.3 per cent increase in total revenue. It is unclear what segment businesses within the U.S. departures gate represent of the $100.6-million in concession sales across the airport. Despite those increases, the airport still operated at a $30.5-million net accounting deficit.
