Army holds discussion on shared Indo-Tibetan heritage
Shimla: India and Tibet are two ancient civilisations with interwoven roots that continue to shape a shared identity, Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Command, said on Saturday.
He was addressing a seminar on shared
Indo-Tibetan heritage
and linked understanding of
national security
organised by the Army's central command in Shimla.
The event brought together scholars, strategists and senior military leaders to examine the deep civilisational ties between India and Tibet and assess their relevance to contemporary
border management
and regional stability.
"The rationale for conducting the seminar stemmed from a growing recognition within the strategic community that cultural depth and historical continuity are essential components of national security particularly in the sensitive Himalayan frontier," an official statement.

Addressing the seminar held at Army Training Command (ARTRAC) here, Lt Gen Sengupta emphasised the significance of
cultural diplomacy
in national strategy and underscored the Army's commitment to preserving India's territorial and civilisational integrity, a statement issued here said.
Asserting that "India and Tibet are two ancient civilisations with interwoven roots that continue to shape a shared identity," Sengupta said that the seminar is a platform to explore the profound historical, cultural, spiritual, and strategic ties that bind India and Tibet."
Delving into the strategic dimension, he said, "From the 1962 war to the Nathu La clashes, we have seen that the terrain demands not just readiness, but surveillance, technological connectivity and a nuanced strategy.
The seminar concluded with a call to strengthen border area development, promote archaeological research, facilitate archival access and revive cultural exchanges, including opening new routes for
Kailash Yatra
, improving local radio broadcasts beyond borders and preserving endangered Himalayan languages.
The day-long seminar, post the visit of the participants to forward areas along this front between June 24-27, was envisioned as a platform to bridge strategic studies with
cultural scholarship
allowing defence professionals to draw on historical insight while shaping responses to emerging challenges in border areas.
"India and Tibet share not just a border but a long and layered relationship marked by spiritual resonance, cultural fusion, ancient trade linkages and shared civilisational values," the statement said.

Indo-French joint military exercise SHAKTI-VIII underway in southern France
La Cavalerie [France], June 28 (ANI): The Indo-French Joint Military Exercise SHAKTI-VIII continues to strengthen operational interoperability and mutual cooperation between the Indian and French Armies. Held at Camp Larzac, La Cavalerie in Southern France, the exercise features the participation of 90 personnel, primarily from the Indian Army's Jammu and Kashmir Rifles battalion, alongside the French Army's 13e Demi-Brigade de Legion Etrangre. These 90 personnel from the Indian Army contingent had departed for France on Monday to participate in the eighth edition of Exercise 'Shakti', scheduled to take place in La Cavalerie from 18 June to 01 July 2025. In an official statement, the Army said, 'The Indian Army contingent has departed today for France to participate in the 8th edition of Exercise Shakti, taking place in La Cavalerie, France, from 18 June to 01 July 2025. The Exercise will foster synergy and interoperability in the conduct of counter terrorism operations in semi-urban terrain.' Exercise Shakti is an annual military training engagement conducted alternately in India and France. Last year, the seventh edition of Exercise Shakti was conducted at Umroi in Meghalaya from 13 to 26 May 2024. It was held at a 'fully developed and modern Foreign Training Node'. Underlining the diplomatic and military importance of the event, the Ministry of Defence in an official statement said, 'The Opening Ceremony of the joint exercise was attended by Thierry Mathou, Ambassador of France to India and Major General Prasanna Sudhakar Joshi, General Officer Commanding 51 Sub Area. The Indian contingent for the 2024 edition comprised 90 personnel, mainly from a Battalion of the Rajput Regiment, with additional participation from other arms and services. Observers from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force were also part of the exercise. The French contingent, also consisting of 90 personnel, was represented mainly by soldiers from the 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade (13th DBLE), the MoD statement added. Outlining the broader aim of the exercise, the Ministry said,' Aim of Exercise SHAKTI is to enhance joint military capability of both sides to undertake multi-domain operations in a sub-conventional scenario under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate. The joint exercise will focus on operations in the semi-urban and mountainous terrain.' 'Objectives to be achieved from the joint training are a high degree of physical fitness, rehearsing and refining drills for operations at the tactical level and sharing of best practices,' the MoD added. Key tactical elements to be practised during the joint exercise include responses to terrorist actions involving the capture of defined territory, setting up of a Joint Command Post and an Intelligence & Surveillance Centre, and securing of landing sites. The exercise will also feature Small Team Insertion and Extraction drills, Special Heliborne Operations, Cordon and Search Operations, as well as the deployment of drones and counter-drone systems. The Ministry added: 'Exercise SHAKTI will enable the two sides to share their best practices in Tactics, Techniques and Procedures of conducting joint operations. The joint exercise will facilitate developing interoperability, bonhomie and camaraderie between armed forces personnel of the two countries. This will also enhance the level of defence cooperation, further fostering bilateral relations between the two friendly nations.' (ANI)

Bhandari, leading a delegation of 14 members, was on a 10-day visit to China, where she had interactions and meetings with Chinese officials. Both Oli and Bhandari met last week, discussing the issue of returning to politics. Oli, back then, also opposed Bhandari's intention to return to politics. On Saturday as well, Oli, who shared the stage alongside Bhandari, left the venue quickly after addressing the event, without listening to the speech delivered by the former head of state. Apart from that, given the time and developments, the announcement by former President Bhandari and the subsequent return of former Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun to the CPN-Maoist Centre comes as a plan by the northern neighbour. A delegation from the CPN-Maoist had also visited China before the formal induction of Pun into an active role within the party. Former President Bhandari, also the former vice-chair of the UML, was twice elected President of the country. She's also the wife of the late Madan Bhandari, the UML general secretary credited with providing the ideological basis for the UML's entry into competitive parliamentary politics. He died in a car crash in Chitwan in 1993 under mysterious circumstances.

(HT Photo) 'The locals of Rajouri, Poonch, Mendhar, Krishna Ghati, Manjakote and Naushera facilitated casualty evacuation, humanitarian and rescue operations under challenging conditions during Operation Sindoor,' said Defence spokesperson Lt Col Suneel Bartwal. Operation Sindoor was a military operation launched by Indian armed forces on the night of 6th/7th May this year in response to a barbaric terrorist attack on civilians in Pahalgam on 22 April where individuals were targeted based on their religion with an aim to fracture peaceful coexistence, said Col Bartwal. A total of 26 people including a local pony rider were brutally killed by the terrorists. The Indian armed forces carried out a firm, focused, calibrated and non-retaliatory response against terror launch pads all along the western border. During the initial strike nine terror camps (four in Pakistan and five in Pakistan occupied Jammu & Kashmir) were destroyed. 'In response Pakistan Army violated ceasefire all along the frontage and when they received befitting reply from armed forces, Pakistan Army targeted innocent civilians in Rajouri and Poonch district killing 17 civilians and injuring 50 others,' he added. However, continuing with their rich tradition of bravery, patriotism as has been demonstrated in earlier wars of 1948, 1965 and 1971 and undeterred by personal losses the people of Rajouri and Poonch joined hands and worked tirelessly along with the armed forces and emerged victorious, he said. The Ace of Spades Division GOC Gen Kaushik Mukherji felicitated the brave civilians who played a pivotal role during Operation Sindoor in restoring normalcy, he said.
