At long last, Amazon MGM Studios has found its man…well, sort of. The global entertainment juggernaut has confirmed that Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond film. The Oscar-nominated auteur, who is best known for his stunning visual storytelling and expansive world-building on projects such as Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Arrival and Sicario, will helm the franchise's next chapter, joining previously announced producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman.
Speaking on Wednesday, Villeneuve revealed that the project had long been his dream, noting that he had been a Bond fan since the very beginning.
'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan,' Villeneuve said. 'To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour. Amy, David, and I are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust.'

Denis Villeneuve Bond Film
The Denis Villeneuve Bond film will mark the beginning of a bold new era for the long-running spy series. Not only will it introduce a new director to the fold, but it will also mark the first official release under the Amazon MGM Studios banner.
In 2021, the streaming service acquired MGM for the eye-watering sum of USD$8.4 billion, securing the rights to the much-loved Bond series in the process. Unfortunately for Amazon, long-time producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson of Eon Productions maintained 50 per cent ownership and creative control over the franchise, effectively relegating Amazon to a distribution partner.
By all reports, that didn't sit well with the streaming service. Rumours of fierce rows between the two parties were widely documented, with The Hollywood Reporter stating that Broccoli allegedly branded Amazon executives 'fucking idiots' over ideas to expand the franchise with spin-offs and a TV series. However, in February, resolution came when Broccoli and Wilson officially handed over creative control of the franchise to Amazon MGM Studios in a deal worth a reported USD$1 billion.
Flash-forward four months, and Amazon has secured an Oscar-nominated talent to lead the franchise's future, with Villeneuve set to make an immediate impact. According to Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, the Canadian filmmaker is the perfect person to lead Bond's 'next chapter'.
'We are honoured that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond's next chapter. He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself,' Hopkins said. 'From Blade Runner 2049 to Arrival to the Dune films, he has delivered compelling worlds, dynamic visuals, complex characters, and—most importantly—the immersive storytelling that global audiences yearn to experience in theatres. James Bond is in the hands of one of today's greatest filmmakers and we cannot wait to get started on 007's next adventure.'

Revisiting a Franchise
Naturally, Villeneuve's involvement in the upcoming Bond project is an important milestone in the franchise's ongoing development, and it's done wonders for putting fans at ease. In addition to being one of the most revered and highly sought-after directors in Hollywood, Villeneuve is no stranger to revisiting older IP and refreshing classic prose for a modern audience.
In 2017, the Canadian filmmaker famously helmed a sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 epic Blade Runner. Villeneuve's contemporary adaptation, Blade Runner 2049, essentially served as a direct follow-up to the events of the classic Harrison Ford-led sci-fi flick and, somewhat surprisingly, was a critical and commercial success. Most importantly, it was lauded by fans, who saw Villeneuve's vision as a worthy continuation of the story arc.
In recent years, sequels and prequels have largely missed the mark, with iconic film franchises such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Ghostbusters failing to recapture the same magic that made their original runs so impressive. With Villeneuve on board, Bond fans may well breathe a sigh of relief; not only is he a massive 007 fan, but he also understands the importance of remaining faithful to the text. The only question that remains unanswered, however, is just who will pick up Bond's Walther PPK pistol.

Still No Star
Despite announcing Villeneuve as director, Amazon MGM Studio has yet to officially confirm who will play James Bond in the upcoming film. For months, speculation has surrounded the topic, and no shortage of celebrity names have been thrown in the ring. In the early days following Daniel Craig's departure, A-listers Idris Elba and Tom Hardy appeared to be the frontrunners; however, whispers from inside the Eon Productions circle suggested the franchise was moving in a more youthful direction.
From there, fan-casts spread like wildfire, and British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson emerged as the most likely candidate. His performances in films such as Bullet Train and Nosferatu proved that he not only had the physical traits to nail the British secret agent's most daring moves but also the acting chops to back them up.
The announcement seemed all but imminent when he was confirmed as an ambassador for watchmaker OMEGA, which famously produces the Seamaster collection featured in every 007 flick since 1995's GoldenEye. That being said, a poor box office showing on his long-awaited lead project, Kraven the Hunter, has raised questions over Taylor-Johnson's viability as a top-billed star and spawned a new bevy of rumours.
Aaron Pierre has also been rumoured for the role | Image: Instagram
Rising star Aaron Pierre, best known for his brooding and captivating role in the Netflix action blockbuster Rebel Ridge, has also emerged as a potential casting choice. The 31-year-old British actor looks every bit the perfect embodiment of the modern spy, and his performances on-screen, while limited, have demonstrated a level of screen presence that is hard to ignore.
Nevertheless, Amazon MGM Studio is remaining tight-lipped about who will slip into 007's perfectly-tailored Saville Row suit, but the recent Villeneuve news does suggest a decision will be made shortly. Villeneuve is currently scheduled to begin filming the third Dune film, Messiah, in the coming months, meaning that any production on a Bond film will have to wait. That gives Amazon MGM Studios just enough time to confirm who and when we can expect a new Bond to arrive. We'll keep the martinis on ice until then.

To channel the elegance of a '90s icon, these are the fashion choices to make
This story is part of the June 29 edition of Sunday Life. See all 13 stories. Newcomers to royal-watching might consider California-born Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, the ultimate American princess. Marrying the blue-blooded, redheaded Prince Harry is a step in the right direction but the former Suits actor still has to bow down to the style credentials of the late Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. After marrying American 'royalty' John F. Kennedy Jr in 1996, fashion executive Carolyn epitomised the international ideal of streamlined sophistication, rivalling her mother-in-law, Jackie Kennedy, and the crowned and tiara-wearing heads of Europe. Recent images from the upcoming, Ryan Murphy-produced series American Love Story about Carolyn and John, who both died in a plane crash in 1999, caused an online uproar for not capturing the ethereal blonde's elusive essence. Here are the ingredients for avoiding the keyboard warriors and emulating and updating Bessette-Kennedy's eternal chic. Make it sleek Bessette-Kennedy's wedding dress, by designer Narcisco Rodriguez (they worked together at Calvin Klein when she was a public relations executive), was a masterpiece of '90s minimalism. The cowl-neck white slip dress dismissed ornament and excess, making Bessette-Kennedy the star. In a 2016 interview with Glamour, the then Meghan Markle acknowledged its impact when asked about her favourite celebrity wedding dress: 'Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Everything goals.' To make an elegant impact in the evening, prioritise minimal draping over tailoring to create a fluid fit that skims the figure. Make it monochrome Black, white and neutrals were Bessette-Kennedy's preferred palette but feel free to add drama with cool creams, soothing blues and fresh greens. Discipline is key when wearing one colour from top to toe. Update the restraint of the '90s with smooth sequins or subtle lace details for a more modern approach to minimalism. Bessette-Kennedy would break the monochrome rule to wear crisp white shirts with skirts. A T-shirt-style blouse over a satin skirt offers the same cool contrast without drifting into officewear. Make it look easy Leave outrageous up-dos and complicated braids to the aspirants to your style throne. Bessette-Kennedy was the model of simplicity when it came to hair and make-up. 'Most of the girls at Calvin had similar long hair, but Carolyn never blew hers out,' former colleague Stormy Stokes told Sunita Kumar Nair for her book Carolyn Bessette Kennedy: A Life in Fashion. 'She taught me how to style my own: wash it, flip it up and down twice, then tie it in a top bun, and ride the subway. By the time we would get to the office, we'd take the bun down and our hair would just be ready to go.' Loading For shorter hair look to the ultimate British princess, Diana, who redefined her signature style with slick hair following her 1996 divorce from Prince Charles. 'She was a bit nervous about the slicked-back appearance,' Sam McKnight, Diana's hairdresser told The Telegraph in the UK. 'Like many women, she used to hide behind her hair. But she looked her best when she didn't do anything to it.'

The Bezos-Sanchez wedding party proves it – the age of vulgarity is upon us
One should never be cynical about love, but it is impossible to not be a little bit cynical about the nuptials of Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos and his recently acquired bride, former television host Lauren Sanchez. The happy couple this week took over Venice for their wedding festival, which commenced with a foam party aboard the $500 million Bezos mega-yacht, moored in view of paparazzi off the coast of Croatia. For the uninitiated, a pre-wedding foam party seems to be a yacht-based, poolside romp in which the bride and groom-to-be frolic in their swimwear, covered by soapy bubbles that have presumably been prepped by one of the many invisible workers who have toiled to make this $50 million special day come true. Just as the working-poor labour force that powers Amazon has invisibly toiled to make Bezos one of the world's richest men (currently fourth-richest, as per the Forbes 'Real Time Billionaires List). We know about the foam party – from which the couple was helicoptered to Venice – because it was abundantly photographed. Like the Zen koan about the tree falling in the forest, there is zero point in a billionaire wedding unless it is telegraphed widely across the world in exquisite detail: the guest list (which included Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry, Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, Kim Kardashian and sundry other Kardashi), the rolling schedule of parties, the flight logs of the 90-odd private jets expected to land at local airports, the price tags, and the dresses, the dresses (for the bride did not have just one). The publicity is the point. The transparent vulgarity is even more the point. As reported in New York magazine, 'Sanchez, in some respects, represents the aesthetic and moral pinnacle of the Mar-a-Lago era.' It was not so long ago that stealth-wealth was in vogue, and that so-called quiet luxury was aspirational. But the re-election of Donald Trump, and the slavish compliance the tech-bro oligarchs immediately bestowed on his administration (Sanchez managed to upstage the president by wearing a cleavage-driven inauguration outfit that Vogue noted 'forgoes inauguration style codes'), has changed all that.

Tom Sandoval found cheating controversy 'really hard'
Tom Sandoval found it "really hard" to overcome his cheating scandal. The 42-year-old star was widely criticised after it emerged that he had a months-long affair with Rachel Leviss, which led to his split from Ariana Madix - but Tom has now got his life back on track and he's having fun as a contestant on America's Got Talent. Asked what winning the TV talent show would mean to him, Tom told E! News: "That would be crazy. "That would be so amazing. Obviously, there's such a slim chance because of so many great acts out there, but I would obviously be so happy for the band and for myself." Tom admitted to feeling particularly nervous about Simon Cowell's feedback. Tom said: "He's a legend. I mean they all are, but he definitely has his reputation of being brutally honest." However, Simon and the other judges have been broadly positive about Tom and his band so far. Tom explained: "Seeing Simon Cowell's smile at the end, and Mel B just being like, 'You really put a smile on my face and I loved it. You guys are not ashamed to say that you're a cover man.' Everybody was having a good time and we got a standing ovation. That means so much to me." Tom also appreciates how fans have embraced him, following his 2023 cheating scandal. In a message to fans, Tom said: "It was really hard. Thank you for following along and hopefully we do well and I do them proud. Wish us the best of luck." Meanwhile, Tom previously admitted that he wears his cheating scandal as a "badge of shame". The reality star said to Ariana on the Vanderpump Rules reunion episode: "I know you don't want to be around me. "Whatever our relationship was the good, the bad - whatever you did, whatever I did - it doesn't matter. You didn't deserve that. And I'm really sorry, from the bottom of my heart." Tom admitted to regretting his affair and acknowledged that he'd struggled to move on from the controversy. He told his ex-girlfriend: "Ariana, I regret it every day. I wear it as a badge of shame. I did the thing that I said I would never do and I did it."
