Data centre tender graft suspect burns nearly RM1 million during MACC raid
According to sources, the suspect attempted to destroy the cash out of panic and shock following a raid conducted by the MACC.
Sources said that during a raid at the suspect's residence in Petaling Jaya last Thursday, a team of MACC officers discovered bundles of RM100 banknotes, amounting to nearly RM1 million, in the process of being burned.
'The suspect is believed to have acted in desperation by grabbing several bundles of cash and attempting to destroy them by fire upon seeing the arrival of the MACC team.
'After the house door was successfully opened, the MACC team conducting the raid found the interior filled with thick smoke emanating from the bathroom. Upon inspection, the team discovered burned RM100 banknotes amounting to nearly RM1 million in the bathroom,' the sources said.
A thorough inspection of the residence also led to the discovery of approximately RM7.5 million in cash, stored in several pillow boxes, along with three luxury watches - a Rolex, an Omega, and a Cartier - as well as various pieces of jewellery, including rings and gold coins.
All the items were seized by the MACC for further investigation.
Meanwhile, MACC deputy chief commissioner (Operations), Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya, when contacted, confirmed the incident.
He stressed that the suspect's attempt to dispose of evidence constituted a serious offence, which could be prosecuted under Section 201 of the Penal Code, carrying a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment and a fine, upon conviction.
However, Ahmad Khusairi added that the main focus of the investigation remains under Section 16 and Section 17A of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which deal with bribery and corporate liability for corruption. - Bernama

PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Pahang has arrested two senior police officers and a retired officer for allegedly soliciting and receiving RM110,000 in bribes to protect drug and ketum distribution activities in the state. Bernama reported that a source said the three men were arrested at around 8.30pm yesterday after arriving at MACC's Temerloh branch to provide statements. A fourth suspect was arrested earlier. MACC believes all four colluded in the illegal activity from 2022 to 2024. 'One of the suspects is believed to have received monthly bribes amounting to between RM4,000 and RM5,000 through bank transfers into his personal account, which he then distributed to others,' the source said. One of the suspects had been released on MACC bail after his statement was recorded. The remaining three are currently under a seven-day remand order until Aug 4. Pahang MACC director Shukor Mahmud confirmed the arrests when contacted.

TEMERLOH: Three senior police officers, including a retired officer, have been remanded for seven days to assist in investigations into allegations of pocketing bribes totalling RM110,000 to protect drug and ketum juice distribution activities across Pahang. The suspects, aged between 30 and 50, were remanded until Aug 4 following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at the Temerloh magistrate's court today. Magistrate Tan Chiew King granted the remand order at 10am today. According to a source, the trio were detained around 8.30pm yesterday when they arrived at the MACC Temerloh branch office to provide their statements. "MACC's investigations led to the arrest of four suspects, all of whom are believed to have conspired to solicit and accept bribes between 2022 and 2024. "One of them is believed to have received monthly bribes amounting to between RM4,000 and RM5,000 through bank transfers into his account. The money was later distributed to the other three suspects through their respective personal bank accounts," the source said. Meanwhile, Pahang MACC director Mohd Shukor Mahmud confirmed the arrests, saying that the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009 for soliciting a bribe. He said the fourth suspect has been released on MACC bail after providing his statement to the agency. Under Section 16(a)(B), offernders face a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of RM10,000, or five times the value of the bribe, whichever is higher, if convicted.
