Kurdistan's Interior Minister: Iran border threat eliminated
Shafaq News/ Iranian Kurdish opposition groups no longer pose a military or security threat along the shared border, Kurdistan Region Interior Minister Rebar Ahmed stated on Wednesday.
Ahmed confirmed to reporters that the joint high committee established by Iran, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region had completed its mandate, emphasizing that bilateral relations have now reached a 'constructive and advanced stage.'
Addressing concerns over Iranian Kurdish opposition groups, he noted that 'appropriate measures' had been taken and 'these forces no longer represent a security or military threat along the shared border.'
In September 2023, the joint high committee overseeing the implementation of the Iraq-Iran security agreement announced the complete evacuation of camps and headquarters belonging to Iranian Kurdish opposition parties in the Kurdistan Region, in preparation for reclassifying them as refugees.
The disarmament deadline under the Iraq-Iran security pact expired on September 19, 2023. Iranian officials had earlier threatened military action against the groups if Baghdad failed to implement the terms.

Iraqi tribe demands justice for killings in Turkiye
Shafaq News – Nineveh/Sanliurfa The al-Rawi tribe in Iraq's Nineveh province condemned on Saturday the 'heinous and treacherous crime' that killed two of its members in Turkiye's Sanliurfa city, urging the Iraqi government to take immediate action. According to a statement, the victims, identified as Youssef Bashar Hamam al-Rawi (22) and Mohammed Bashar Hamam al-Rawi (12), were fatally shot while working at an industrial workshop in Sanliurfa. The tribe alleged the assailants were part of a group of criminals who opened fire on the two Iraqis due to a prior dispute, holding Turkish authorities 'fully responsible—legally and morally—for pursuing the perpetrators and ensuring they are not granted impunity.' It also urged urgent action by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Iraqi Embassy in Ankara to ensure a transparent investigation, hold the perpetrators accountable, and monitor the case closely to prevent obstruction.

Duhok: +34K IDPs eligible to vote in Iraq polls
Shafaq News – Duhok More than 34,000 displaced people in Duhok province will be eligible to vote in Iraq's November 11 parliamentary elections, the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced on Saturday. Khalid Abbas, head of IHEC's Duhok office, told Shafaq News the commission is coordinating with the Ministry of Migration and Displacement to verify the identities of displaced residents, both in and outside formal camps. To support this process, IHEC has deployed over 20 mobile teams to update voter records ahead of opening dedicated polling stations. Abbas also emphasized that returnees who have gone back to their home districts must vote there, rather than in the camps. According to official figures, Duhok currently hosts 15 displacement camps with more than 3,300 people, most of them from Sinjar after fleeing the ISIS incursion in 2014. Earlier today, Abbas confirmed in a press conference that Duhok will hold 11 parliamentary seats: eight for men, three for women, and one reserved for the Christian quota.

US: Iran-backed militias threaten Iraq
Shafaq News – Washington/Baghdad On Saturday, the US State Department reaffirmed its strong opposition to what it described as Iran's destabilizing influence in Iraq. A State Department official told Shafaq News that the United States government opposes Iran's 'destabilizing influence in Iraq and continues to view Iran-backed militias as a threat to Iraqi sovereignty and to regional stability." The statement comes amid growing concerns that Iraq could become a direct battleground in broader regional tensions, even as the open conflict between Iran and Israel subsides. Reports indicate that Esmail Qaani, commander of Iran's Quds Force, is currently visiting Baghdad, where he is reportedly holding meetings with leaders of armed factions and the so-called Axis of Resistance, an alliance of Iran-aligned groups in Iraq and the wider region, to coordinate positions and potentially form a new operations room, according to Radio Monte Carlo International. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, speaking earlier this week, warned that Iraq will not tolerate any internal or external actions that undermine its security and stability, vowing a firm response to any such threats.
