UAE assures full cooperation on easing visa process for Pakistanis

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has assured full cooperation in easing the visa process for Pakistani citizens.
The development came in a meeting between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed enhancing cooperation in security, counter-narcotics, anti-smuggling, and the prevention of illegal immigration.
Exchange of technology also came under discussion.
The two sides also discussed the issues of visa faced by Pakistan.
A large number of Pakistanis are contributing to the strength of the UAE's economy, the interior minister said.
The minister emphasized the importance of easing the visa policy.
'We want Pakistani citizens to come to the UAE with ease. Relaxation in visa policies will bring great relief.'
Earlier, Naqvi assured that steps were being taken to improve the global ranking of the Pakistani passport, which, he said would reach a significantly better position in the next two years, making Pakistanis proud of holding the green passport.

New record at PSX: KSE-100 crosses 136,000 level

Buying momentum continued unabated at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), with the benchmark KSE-100 Index crossing the 136,000 level, a new record high, amid a gain of over 1,800 points during trading on Monday. At 12:15pm, the benchmark index was hovering at 136,140.87 level, a gain of 1,847.11 points or 1.37%. Buying was observed in key sectors including automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs and refinery. Index-heavy stocks including MARI, OGDC, PPL, POL, PSO, SNGPL, SSGC, MEBL, NBP and UBL traded in the green. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif rejoiced over PSX's performance, saying that the development echoes the business community's confidence in the Pakistani economy. As per a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the prime minister added that positive economic indicators are a sign of the right direction of government policies. Meanwhile, analysts also attributed the bullish run to improved economic indicators, including record remittances collected during the last fiscal year. 'Result season has also kicked off, so that too needs to be closely monitored,' Sana Tawfik, Head of Research at Arif Habib Limited (AHL), told Business Recorder. During the previous week, the PSX extended its bullish momentum, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index closing at a fresh all-time high of 134,299.77 points, after gaining a robust 2,351 points or 1.8% on a week-on-week (WoW) basis. This marks another milestone in the local equity market's remarkable run, which has been fuelled by improving macroeconomic fundamentals, sustained foreign inflows, and strong institutional participation. Internationally, Wall Street and European share futures pulled Asian indices lower on Monday as the latest salvo of threats in the US tariff wars kept investors on edge. However, there were still hopes it was mainly bluster by President Donald Trump. Trump on Saturday said he would impose a 30% tariff on most imports from the EU and Mexico from August 1, even as they are locked in long negotiations. The European Union said it would extend a suspension of countermeasures to US tariffs until early August and continue to press for a negotiated settlement, though Germany's finance minister called for firm action if the levies went ahead. Investors have become largely inured to Trump's chaotic policy methods, and stocks eased only moderately, while the dollar gained little against the euro. For now, MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was flat, while Japan's Nikkei eased 0.3%. Chinese blue chips firmed 0.3% as data showed annual export growth topped forecasts at 5.8% in June, even as exports to the US fell almost 10%. Figures on retail sales, industrial output and gross domestic product are out on Tuesday. This is an intra-day update

Balancing the books and the battlefield: Pakistan's fiscal strategy for FY2025–26—III

With an eye on long-term innovation, Rs?79?billion is dedicated to the IT sector. Major developments include the Karachi IT Park, Islamabad Technology Park, and a national freelancing platform. The government also aims to scale up IT exports, which have already grown 21 percent year-on-year. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will benefit from increased access to low-cost financing and enhanced risk coverage. Over Rs 300 billion has already been disbursed to 95,000 businesses, with the government planning to double this outreach through new policy tools and financial instruments. Remittances—Pakistan's most stable source of foreign exchange—rose to USD 38.3 billion last year, a remarkable 27 percent year-on-year increase. Enhanced services for overseas Pakistanis, such as secure digital transfers, diaspora awards, and legal protections, are helping cement trust and sustain these vital inflows. These remittances serve as a bulwark against external imbalances and are instrumental in maintaining the State Bank's foreign exchange reserves, which currently stand at a reassuring USD?14 billion. The export target for FY2025–26 is set at USD 35.3 billion—a 7.4 percent increase—while imports are expected to grow to USD?65.2?billion. This will result in a trade deficit of nearly USD 30 billion, which the government plans to offset through robust remittance inflows and foreign direct investment. Exporters, especially in textiles, IT, and rice, will benefit from zero-rated tax regimes, tariff rationalization, and simplified refund systems. A newly proposed Tariff Reform Package aims to reduce maximum duty rates to 15 percent within four years, enhancing global competitiveness and easing the burden on domestic producers. AJK PM pays tribute to Kashmiri martyrs for their role in freedom

ISLAMABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister (PM) Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq on Sunday recognised the courage of the Kashmiri martyrs of 13 July, emphasizing that their sacrifice formed the bedrock of the Kashmiri freedom movement, a fight that will endure. In an exclusive conversation with a local news channel, he emphasised that the spirit of resistance shown by the martyrs continues to inspire generations of Kashmiris. He urged the international community to acknowledge the Kashmiris' legitimate right to self-determination and called for renewed efforts to resolve the longstanding conflict through peaceful dialogue. Anwar ul Haq further reaffirmed that the struggle for Kashmir's freedom is a collective responsibility that will carry on until justice is achieved. Responding a query, he also warned that India's brutality shows no signs of abating, despite the courageous response from our Shaheen brave Pakistani armed forces. He stressed that if such aggression is not stopped, it will only lead to further escalation and intensified resistance from the Kashmiri people. He warned that if such aggression persists, it will only harden the resolve of Kashmiris, escalate their struggle for freedom and provoke a fierce and uncompromising response from Pakistan's armed forces. He also held India responsible for the ongoing bloodshed and violence in Balochistan, accusing it of fueling unrest and destabilizing the region through covert operations. He warned that such interference not only threatens regional peace but also undermines the sovereignty and security of neighboring countries, calling on the international community to take notice and hold India accountable for its actions.
