DK Shivakumar proposes dedicated flyover from Hebbal to Bengaluru airport
Shivakumar requested the Centre's assistance in upgrading the Bengaluru-Kanakapura highway (NH 209) from four lanes to six, with service roads. He emphasised that the development of industrial areas, particularly in Harohalli, has resulted in increased traffic and highlighted the need for measures to ensure smoother movement and improved safety.COMPLETION OF KAGGALIPURA ROADWORKHe also appealed for the completion of the 7-km section of NH 209 from Ravi Shankar Guruji Ashram to Kaggalipura Toll, which has been delayed due to objections from the National Green Tribunal. This stretch, he said, has become a major bottleneck, contributing to severe congestion. This could also smoothen the process for Karnataka to push for the second airport in Bengaluru.COMPENSATION FOR SATELLITE RING ROAD PROJECTadvertisementThe appeal also called for prompt compensation to farmers who lost land for the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project (NH 948A). The project, aimed at improving connectivity between key towns, has been delayed due to pending compensation payments, which have caused significant hardship for the affected farmers.FLYOVER FROM HEBBAL TO AIRPORTShivakumar urged the construction of a dedicated flyover between Hebbal Junction and Kempegowda International Airport, pointing to the heavy traffic congestion caused by the rapid development in the area. A flyover, he said, would help streamline traffic, reduce travel time for airport commuters, and ensure smoother movement for both local and industrial traffic.

Over 95 lakh domestic tourist visits to Jammu & Kashmir during Jan-June in 2025: Government data
The figures for domestic tourist visits to Jammu and Kashmir during January-June this year stood at more than 95 lakh, according to data shared by the government. Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat shared the data in a written response on Monday to a query on whether the Centre is aware of the decline in tourist footfall and business losses in Jammu and Kashmir during the peak tourist season following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi also asked if any assessment was made by the government on its economic impact on local tourism-dependent stakeholders. "No such assessment has been made by the Ministry of Tourism on economic impact on local tourism-dependent stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir," Shekhawat said. The Pahalgam terror strike took place on April 22 in which 26 civilians, mostly tourists were brutally killed. India avenged the killings with Operation Sindoor under which the armed forces early May 7 decimated multiple terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK). A special discussion in the Lok Sabha on "India's strong, successful and decisive Operation Sindoor" began on Monday as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the military action against Pakistan had sent a clear message to supporters of terrorism that India was committed to defend its motherland. In his response, Shekhawat also shared year-wise tabulated data for domestic tourist visits (DTVs) and foreign tourist visits (FTVs) from 2020 to 2025. This data is provided by the state tourism department. Based on the latest information received from the Jammu and Kashmir tourism department, the number of DTVs and FTVs stood at 95,92,664 and 19,570 respectively for the period January-June of 2025. DTVs for preceding four years were -- 2,35,24,629 (for year 2024); 2,06,79,336 (2023); 1,84,99,332 (2022); 1,13,14,920 (2021) and 25,19,524 (2020). FTVs for preceding four years were -- 65,452 (for year 2024); 55,337 (2023); 19,985 (2022); 1,650 (2021) and 5,317 (2020, and for January-June period of 2025 it stood at 19,570. Shekhawat said the Ministry of Tourism has taken several steps or initiatives to promote tourism sector in the country, including in Jammu and Kashmir. On April 23, the Union tourism minister had told reporters in Delhi that some people with nefarious intentions had tried to again "incite separatism and terrorism" in the Valley and asserted that his ministry would do the best to "minimise the dent" on tourism in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of the Pahalgam attack.

CM to meet President Murmu seeking assent to quota Bills
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has decided to seek the appointment of President Droupadi Murmu to impress upon her the need to give assent to the Bills pertaining to the 42% quota for BCs in local body polls. 'The Chief Minister will seek the appointment of the President. Opposition leader in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and his counterpart in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge as well as more than 100 MPs forming part of the INDI alliance will accompany the Chief Minister as and when an appointment is fixed,' Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar told reporters after the Cabinet meeting here on Monday night. Mr. Prabhakar exhorted BC leaders of all political parties as well as those leading the organisations working for their interests to join the State delegation in New Delhi 'at this crucial juncture where the State has taken a proactive decision to give BCs their due'. He invited BJP MPs, including Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Arvind Dharmapuri and R. Krishnaiah hailing from the BC communities, to join hands in convincing the Centre to pass the Bills in the interests of the BC communities. He said that there were judgments in the past like Indira Sawhney case where hike in reservations was allowed if there was empirical data in support of the claims. He dismissed the claims of BJP leaders like its State president N. Ramachandra Rao and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy against the enhancement of reservations to backward classes. 'What is the BJP's stand on BC reservations? The party which did not accommodate a BC leader as floor leader in the assembly is claiming that a BC leader will be made the Chief Minister as and when it comes to power,' he wondered accusing the saffron party of indulging in diversion politics. He recalled the timeline for the passage of the two bills enhancing the quota of BCs and said the government had adopted a transparent process in the entire exercise. Governor Jishnu Dev Varma too vetted the two Bills and obtained legal opinion on them before forwarding them for the President's assent. He advised the political parties, especially the BJP, not to create obstacles in the implementation of the Bills as this was the first initiative taken by any government in the interest of BCs since Independence. 'The decision to enhance reservation for backward classes is not against any political party. All the parties should join hands in mounting pressure on the Centre,' he said. Replying to queries on whether protests would follow after August 7, he said the government would decide about the future course based on the response from the President and the developments thereafter.

Did you ask his religion first? Mamata Banerjee's dig at PM Modi-Muizzu hug
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday attacked the Centre for allegedly depriving central funds to her state and criticised the move to extend a new Line of Credit worth Rs 4,850 crore to the Maldives. Banerjee took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning whether he asked the religion of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu before hugging at the 'Bhasha Andolan' (Language Movement) in Bolpur, Banerjee accused the BJP of trying to erase Bengali identity and implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) "through the backdoor".advertisement"When you travel to Arab nations and hug the sheikhs, do you ask whether they are Hindus or Muslims? Did you ask the Maldives President his religion before hugging him and donating Rs 5,000 crore, while depriving Bengal of its dues?" she said. Raising the issue of alleged detention of Bengali-speaking migrants, she claimed that the BJP government were torturing them across states ruled by the party."Bengalis are being tortured across states. Why this hatred? If Bengal can accept and shelter 1.5 crore migrant workers from other states, why can't you accept 22 lakh Bengali migrants working elsewhere?" she asked."I will ask them to come back. We are making a scheme for you. We will provide everything to you. Come here and work here. Don't go to Gujarat and don't stay in UP or Rajasthan," she said that Bengali-speaking migrants had all their identity documents, but they were still being asked by authorities to leave."I have seen in Maharashtra that a migrant labourer was killed. This is not India. This is a big shame for us. I know my country is united and shows the path to the world. I do not recognise the idea of a nation that butchers a migrant just for speaking Bengali," she Chief Minister stressed that Bengali is the world's fifth most spoken language and second in the BJP over the NRC, Banerjee said, "No NRC will be allowed here in Bengal. I am still alive and no detention camps will be allowed. We will not allow anyone to steal the addresses of Bengali people. Are you playing NRC? You have asked the Election Commission to verify the people's addresses."Alleging that the Election Commission's electoral roll revision in Bihar was a "conspiracy", Banerjee raised the issue of Rohingyas settling in India."This is a total conspiracy to push people out of the voter list. You will be zero if you do this. You have said there are 1.5 crore Rohingyas in Bengal. But you don't know geography. There are only 9 lakh Rohingyas in Bangladesh," she also made it clear that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) will not be implemented in West Bengal."Everyone will go for a survey with you. You want to see? We will send mothers and sisters for surveys with ECI. Khela hobe. (The game will go on)," she said.- Ends(with inputs from PTI)Must Watch IN THIS STORY#Mamata Banerjee#Narendra Modi#Maldives
