Japan to consider tweaking bond issuance plan, sources say

Reuters27-05-2025
TOKYO, May 27 (Reuters) - Japan's Ministry of Finance (MOF) will consider tweaking the composition of its bond programme for the current fiscal year, which could involve trimming the issuance of super-long bonds, two sources told Reuters on Tuesday.
The MOF will make a decision after holding discussions with market participants around mid- to late-June, the sources who had direct knowledge of the plan said.
The plan comes amid recent rises in super-long bond yields to record levels, due largely to dwindling demand from traditional buyers like life insurers.
If the MOF were to reduce issuance of 20-, 30- or 40-year Japanese government bonds (JGB), it would likely increase issuance of shorter-dated debt instead, the sources said.
As such, the total planned size of JGB issuance for the current fiscal year that ends March 2026 will remain unchanged from 172.3 trillion yen ($1.21 trillion), they said.

Sri Lanka visas to be made free for UK tourists

Sri Lanka has announced plans to waive visa fees for British travellers in a bid to boost tourism. Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath reportedly confirmed that tourists from 33 new countries, including the UK, will be able to visit the island without paying visa fees at the Hotel Show Colombo 2025 on Friday (25 July). Travellers from the US, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and Australia will also be able to enter without paying visa fees, reported Travel + Leisure Asia. Mr Herath added that Sri Lanka 's government face an annual loss of up to £50m by waiving the visa fees. However, the minister expected higher tourist footfall from the free visas to make up for the loss in economic gains. According to a government press release, Mr Herath said that Sri Lanka's tourism industry is 'steadily progressing day by day', with the tourism sector expected to become a 'key contributor' to strengthening the national economy. He said: 'We have stabilised the economy, and through policy changes in tourism, we aim to ensure steady growth in arrivals.' Travellers from seven countries – China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia and Japan – have had a visa fee waiver to enter the South Asian country since September 2024, following a trial phase in 2023. British passport holders currently have to apply for a 30-day tourist visa with a $50 (£37.50) fee to visit Sri Lanka. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), Sri Lanka welcomed 2,053,465 tourists in 2024. Of these, the island hosted the most Indian, Russian and British travellers. The start date for free visa entry is unknown; however, it is expected that eligible travellers will still need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) in advance, free of charge. The Independent has contacted Sri Lanka's Ministry of Tourism and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority for comment.

Microsoft's AI edge under scrutiny as OpenAI turns to rivals for cloud services

July 29 (Reuters) - Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab investors head into Wednesday's earnings with one big question: is the company's artificial intelligence edge at risk as partner OpenAI turns to rivals Google, Oracle and CoreWeave (CRWV.O), opens new tab for cloud services? Exclusive licensing deals and access to OpenAI's cutting-edge models have made Microsoft one of the biggest winners of the generative AI boom, fueling growth in its Azure cloud business and pushing its market value toward $4 trillion. In the April-June quarter, the tie-up is expected to have driven a 34.8% increase in Azure revenue, in line with the company's forecast and higher than the 33% rise in the previous three months, according to data from Visible Alpha. But that deal is being renegotiated as OpenAI eyes a public listing, with media reports suggesting a deadlock over how much access Microsoft will retain to ChatGPT maker's technology and its stake if OpenAI converts into a public-benefit corporation. The conversion cannot proceed without Microsoft's sign-off and is crucial for a $40 billion funding round led by Japanese conglomerate SoftBank Group, $20 billion of which is contingent on the restructuring being completed by the end of the year. OpenAI, which recently deepened its Oracle tie-up with a planned 4.5 gigawatts data center capacity, has also added Google Cloud among its suppliers for computing capacity. UBS analysts said investor views on the Microsoft–OpenAI partnership are divided, though the software giant holds an upper hand. "Microsoft's leadership earned enough credibility … such that the company will end up negotiating terms that will be in the interest of its shareholders," the analysts said. Some of that confidence is reflected in the company's stock price, which has risen by more than a fifth so far this year. In the April-June period, Microsoft's fiscal fourth quarter, the company likely benefited from a weaker dollar, stronger non-AI Azure demand and PC makers pulling forward orders for its Windows products ahead of possible U.S. tariffs. Revenue is expected to have risen 14% to $73.81 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG, its best growth in three quarters. Profit is estimated to have increased 14.2% to $25.16 billion, slightly slower than the previous quarter as operating costs rose. Capital spending will also be in focus after rival Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab raised its annual outlay by $10 billion last week. Microsoft has repeatedly said it remains capacity constrained on AI, and in April signaled continued growth in capex after planned spending of over $80 billion last fiscal year, though at a slower pace and on shorter-lived assets such as AI chips. Dan Morgan, senior portfolio manager at Synovus Trust who owns Microsoft shares, said the spending has been paying off. "Investors may still be underestimating the potential for Microsoft's AI business to drive durable consumption growth in the agentic AI era."

India's GMR Energy in talks with investors to issue 5-year bonds

MUMBAI, July 29 (Reuters) - India's GMR Energy plans to raise 16 billion rupees ($184 million) via five-year bonds, two sources told Reuters on Tuesday, as the holding firm for two major power units taps the market for fresh funding. The company will offer an internal rate of return (IRR) of 14.60% to the investors of this issue, which include some alternative investment firms, foreign investors and foreign banks, the sources said. The sources requested anonymity as the talks are private. The company did not respond to a Reuters email seeking comment. The company is the holding company for GMR Kamalanga Energy and GMR Warora Energy, both of which operate thermal power plants. The proceeds of the issue will be used for inter-group lending, including repayment of an existing loan. The bonds would be redeemed in installments, with 20% each at the end f the third and fourth year and 60% at the end of the fifth year. The issue will have a put option at the end of February 2028 and at the end of every four months thereafter.
