New bridge in Maharashtra becomes skidding zone, closed within hours of opening
Just a few days after the inauguration, the flyover, once promoted as a key solution to traffic congestion, is drawing sharp criticism from opposition and commuters, who now refer to it as a 'skidding zone' due to loose gravel, muddy patches, cement spills and unevenly laid tar.The newly inaugurated bridge has now become the epicentre of a political storm, with opposition parties lashing out at the ruling Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) over allegations of substandard construction and hasty inauguration.A video posted by former MNS MLA Pramod Ratan Patil, showing potholes and gravel washed away by rain, quickly went viral. Patil criticised the quality of the construction and questioned the decision to open an allegedly incomplete bridge.# ! # # #MMRDA @MMRDAOfficial https://t.co/yh6zl5XQF2 pic.twitter.com/f4LbSKugFm— Raju Patil ( () ) (@rajupatilmanase) July 4, 2025'The construction work of the Palava Bridge has been of extremely poor quality, and regarding this, I have demanded an inspection of the bridge's quality,' he said in his social media post. 'What's this nonsense, Gandabhai?'In response, the Shinde faction released its own video showing vehicles moving on the bridge and claimed it was in good condition.MLA Rajesh More defended the work and said, 'This bridge was built due to the efforts of MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde to relieve traffic on the Kalyan-Shil Road. We are opening it for vehicular movement and expect citizens to be happy. We want to tell the opposition, we don't just criticise via tweets, we inspect work on the ground and show the results.''The road had been temporarily shut due to slippery asphalt, but we immediately spread fine gravel. Opposition released a video showing a pothole, but even today after inspection, the road is perfectly fine and open to traffic. It seems like the opposition is just seeing imaginary potholes,' he added.Dipesh Pundlik Mhatre, leader of the Thackeray faction, demanded that criminal cases be filed against the officials and contractors involved. He also launched a sharp worded attack on X.'Several people were injured after falling on this bridge which was inaugurated on July 4. The road has deteriorated badly. I've submitted a memorandum to DCP Atul Zhende and demanded legal action against those who inaugurated the incomplete bridge and the contractors responsible for substandard work,' Mhatre said while talking to the media in Marathi.advertisementFurthermore, adding fuel to the fire, Pramod Ratan Patil also targeted Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for choosing to travel by helicopter from Thane to Kalyan, a distance of just 20 kilometers, during his Ashadhi Ekadashi visit."For a journey of just 20 kilometers, was a helicopter necessary? Had he used this bridge, he would have witnessed its poor condition firsthand. Once upon a time, he came to the ground for his loved ones' work, now it's time to come down and see the public's problems too," Patil questioned. The Palava Bridge has been under construction for eight years, causing severe traffic issues for daily commuters on Kalyan-Shil Road. The opposition has accused the government of inaugurating the bridge in a rush without ensuring it was fully completed and safe.- Ends

EPS accuses rivals of twisting Amit Shah's remarks to disrupt NDA unity
DMK insulted VCK, CPM; we will roll out red carpet for allies: EPS Anbumani had made the remark that his party should be part of the government for the welfare of Tamil Nadu, as part of his statement on the PMK's 37th founding day. This is the first time that the AIADMK had openly acknowledged that the PMK is not officially part of the AIADMK-BJP alliance in TN yet. The PMK joining the chorus for power sharing puts AIADMK in a further awkward position since AMMK and TMC (M), which are part of the NDA, have already endorsed the BJP's coalition government idea. Palaniswami's remarks on the PMK also gains significance as the party has maintained a status akin to that of Schrödinger's cat when it came to whether it continued in the BJP-led NDA or not, amid the ongoing power struggle between Anbumani and his father and party founder S Ramadoss. The PMK sided with the BJP when the AIADMK quit the NDA ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. To another question on whether the T T V Dhinakaran-led AMMK is part of the alliance, EPS said, 'BJP is in our alliance. A few other parties are also there.' On the possibility of reconciliation with former CM and expelled AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam, an ally of BJP, he said, 'That chapter is closed.' VCK, CPM continuing with DMK despite insults Palaniswami also alleged that the VCK and CPM were continuing in the DMK-led alliance despite being insulted by the ruling party. On the other hand, AIADMK is rolling out a 'red carpet' for anyone willing to join the alliance, he said. He alleged that the CPM was denied permission to hold a conference in Villupuram while the VCK was denied permission to erect even party flagpoles. 'Yet they call this government wonderful. Should you continue in that alliance even after facing such insults,' he asked the DMK allies. (With inputs from Chennai)

Ramadoss and son set for a thaw, as cold feet in family after ‘tapping' complaint
THE simmering public rift between Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S Ramadoss and his son, party president Anbumani Ramadoss, may be headed for a cooling down – prompted not by a sudden meeting of the minds, but the alleged discovery of a tapping device, and the apprehension of a police investigation. According to two senior PMK sources and a confidant close to the family, a complaint filed on behalf of Ramadoss about the discovery of a sophisticated audio-tapping device at his house, and the hint that the son's side may be implicated in it, had prompted a flurry of damage-control efforts by the family. G Viswanathan, who runs the VIT Group of Institutions and is a long-time friend of the family, is reportedly the chief mediator. A complaint filed with police's Cyber Crime Wing by PMK Headquarters secretary M Anbalagan, seen by The Indian Express, says that 'an apparatus (bug)' was found at the official residence of Ramadoss by his staff on the evening of July 9, 'in the usual sitting chair (sofa)', while they were cleaning the furniture. The complaint added that the device was planted while Ramadoss was not present, and sought a thorough search of the house 'to find out if there are any other devices also fixed in any secret place by the mischief mongers, who all appear to be anti-social elements'. The complaint also urged the authorities 'to take appropriate legal action at the earliest, apart from providing adequate police force for the safety of our Founder President and his family'. However, the PMK and Ramadoss family later got apprehensive that the complaint provided a reason to the DMK government to send in state police into Ramadoss's house, as well as go after Anbumani. The PMK is an ally of the BJP-led NDA in the state. Incidentally, Ramadoss's complaint regarding the 'tapping' device followed earlier questions raised by him about digital security within the party, claiming that his social media accounts were still controlled by those loyal to Anbumani, whom he had dismissed. 'With the Villupuram police reportedly preparing to act on the complaint (over the 'bugging' device), and seeking details, the possibility of law enforcement entering the family properties and potentially questioning Anbumani became too risky for both sides,' said a senior PMK leader. 'Letting them enter the house itself would be detrimental to the party,' said a top source in the party. This added an urgency to the mediation efforts between the father and son, and as per sources, a breakthrough is near. A top source in the family said it was Anbumani's father-in-law Krishnaswamy, who is also a friend of Viswanathan, who had urged the VIT Group owner to intervene. Senior Ramadoss and Viswanathan are believed to have met last week on Saturday. The top PMK source said: 'The conversation between Viswanathan and Ayya (Ramadoss) was candid. The focus now is not on ego or succession, but on protecting the family and the party from irreparable damage.' A PMK leader said what contributed to the thaw was Anbumani's meeting last week with mother Saraswathi at a family wedding in Chennai. Anbumani and his wife Sowmya touched Saraswathi's feet and sought her blessings, as senior party members watched. The two sides reportedly went on to hold talks for nearly two hours, though Ramadoss and Anbumani made sure that they were not present together at the venue. A formal withdrawal of the police complaint on the 'bugging' device is being considered, insiders said, and more family meetings are expected before the weekend. The developments come ahead of a big public protest planned on July 20 by Anbumani, demanding implementation of 10.5% internal reservation for the Vanniyar community within the Most Backward Classes quota. A truce with his father before the meeting, which is expected to attract more than 5,000 party cadres and would be held just kilometres from Ramadoss's home, would be symbolically a big boost for the party. 'We hope that the weekend passes without a knock on the door from the Villupuram police, and the father and son share the stage on July 20,' said a PMK leader. While Ramadoss's office promised to respond soon, Anbumani and Viswanathan were not available for comments. The rift between Ramadoss and Anbumani spilled into the open earlier this year when the senior leader was seen as sidelining the son. Then, in a surprise move, Ramadoss pushed to elevate his grandson P Mukundan – the son of his daughter Gandhimathi – as PMK youth wing president. Anbumani opposed the move, which was seen as an attempt to undercut his leadership. Earlier this month, Ramadoss overruled Anbumani's expulsion of an MLA, saying that as 'working president', he did not have that authority.

20 states sue FEMA over cancelled disaster resilience grant programme
Twenty Democratic-led states have filed suit against the Federal Emergency Management Agency, challenging the elimination of a long-running grant programme that helps communities guard against damage from natural disasters. The lawsuit contends President Donald Trump's administration acted illegally when it announced in April that it was ending the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities programme. FEMA cancelled some projects already in the works and refused to approve new ones despite funding from Congress. "In the wake of devastating flooding in Texas and other states, it's clear just how critical federal resources are in helping states prepare for and respond to natural disasters," said Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell of Massachusetts, where the federal lawsuit was filed on Wednesday. "By abruptly and unlawfully shutting down the Bric programme, this administration is abandoning states and local communities that rely on federal funding to protect their residents and, in the event of disaster, save lives." FEMA did not immediately respond Wednesday to a request for comment. It said in April that the program was "wasteful and ineffective" and "more concerned with political agendas than helping Americans affected by natural disasters". The programme, established by a 2000 law, provides grants for a variety of disaster mitigation efforts, including levees to protect against floods, safe rooms to provide shelter from tornadoes, vegetation management to reduce damage from fires and seismic retrofitting to fortify buildings for earthquakes. During his first term, Trump signed a law shoring up funding for disaster risk reduction efforts. The programme then got a USD 1 billion boost from an infrastructure law signed by former President Joe Biden. That law requires FEMA to make available at least USD 200 million annually for disaster mitigation grants for the 2022-2026 fiscal years, the lawsuit says. The suit contends the Trump administration violated the constitutional separation of powers because Congress had not authorised the programme's demise. It also alleges the programme's termination was illegal because the decision was made while FEMA was under the leadership of an acting administrator who had not met the requirements to be in charge of the agency. The lawsuit says communities in every state have benefited from federal disaster mitigation grants, which saved lives and spared homes, businesses, hospitals and schools from costly damage. Some communities have already been affected by the decision to end the program. Hillsborough, North Carolina, had been awarded nearly USD 7 million to relocate a wastewater pumping station out of a flood plain and make other water and sewer system improvements. But that hadn't happened yet when the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal damaged the pumping station and forced it offline last week. In rural Mount Pleasant, North Carolina, town officials had hoped to use more than USD 4 million from the BRIC program to improve stormwater drainage and safeguard a vulnerable electric system, thus protecting investments in a historic theatre and other businesses. While the community largely supports Trump, assistant town manager Erin Burris said people were blindsided by the lost funding they had spent years pursuing. "I've had downtown property owners saying, What do we do?'" Burris said. "I've got engineering plans ready to go and I don't have the money to do it.
