Steelers GM on seventh-round rookie: 'We expect him to contribute sooner than later'
On Saturday's episode of The Standard, Khan spoke highly of Kent's ability to contribute on both defense and special teams:
'Donte [Kent], we spent a significant amount of time studying his film, looking at his production — not only on the defensive side, but also on special teams,' Khan said. 'And the more we watched him, the more excited we got about him. Solid character. Again, another guy who's got a really good opportunity, and we expect him to contribute sooner rather than later.'
During Kent's time at Central Michigan, he set the school record for pass breakups with 47 and was also a dominant force in the punt return game as a senior — averaging 13.6 yards per return, including an incredible 68-yard return touchdown.
Fans should keep an eye on Kent at July's training camp, as the young defender's versatility will help him compete for a spot on the Steelers' 53-man roster.

Steelers GM Omar Khan open to Aaron Rodgers staying in Pittsburgh longer than one year: 'He's a young 41'
Aaron Rodgers is 41 years old. He's entering his 21st NFL season. The four-time league MVP said on "The Pat McAfee Show" last month that he's "pretty sure" 2025 will also be his final season. At the time, Rodgers said he didn't ask Pittsburgh for more than one season, hence the one-year deal he signed ahead of Steelers minicamp. But recently-extended Steelers general manager Omar Khan said Friday on "The Rich Eisen Show" that he'd be open to Rodgers staying in Pittsburgh longer than just one season. Eisen asked, "Do you envision any scenario in which this could be a longer stay in Pittsburgh, if [Rodgers is] so inclined?" Khan replied: "Obviously we have to see how the season goes, but absolutely. He's a young 41, and we're obviously taking it year-by-year, and that's where we're at. "But we're obviously not closing the door on anything." While earning 10 Pro Bowl nods and a Super Bowl ring, Rodgers spent the first 18 seasons of his Hall of Fame-caliber career with the Green Bay Packers, who drafted him No. 24 overall in 2005. It looked like he'd end his illustrious NFL playing days in New York, but his two-year stint with the Jets didn't go according to plan. Rodgers tore his Achilles on the Jets' fourth snap of the 2023 season, which he then missed while recovering from the heartbreaking injury. Last year, he posted a 28:11 touchdown-to-interception ratio and threw for 3,897 yards while completing 63% of his passes. But his 90.5 passer rating was just below the 92.3 league average and far below his 102.6 career average. His 6.7 yards per attempt were the fewest he had averaged in a season since 2015. His return, and subsequent durability, at his age last season was impressive. His team's record was not. The Jets finished 5-12 and didn't sniff the playoffs. There was a long wait this offseason to see if Rodgers would come back for another NFL season, either with the Jets or with another franchise. Eisen asked Khan how he remained so patient for Rodgers to make a decision. "Somebody asked me about that the other day, and I can say we don't really view our patience as a weakness," Khan said Friday. "I view it as a strength. And we had some conversations, and we were engaged with him and just felt really good about our chances. And we went through the evaluation process early and felt like he was going to be the right guy for us if we could land the plane. ... He did a great job of communicating with us. I don't know what the narrative was out there." But that's when Eisen cut Khan off. Eisen asked for the fourth-year Steelers GM to clarify what he meant by Rodgers' "great job of communicating." Eisen asked if Rodgers was reaching out to the organization. "It's just open dialogue," said Khan, who was working in the Steelers' football operations and player personnel department when they won two Super Bowls in the 2000s. "We knew where he stood, what was going on with him. And he knew where we were, and it just felt really comfortable with the process." Rodgers took what longtime Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin called a "productive" visit on March 28. At the spring owners meetings the next week, team president Art Rooney II was asked if Rodgers would sign with the team, and Rooney indicated Pittsburgh was on that trajectory. In mid-April, though, Rodgers went on the "McAfee Show" and mentioned that retirement could still be a possibility while noting that he wanted to focus on his personal life at that time. The Steelers waited until the sixth round to draft a quarterback — Ohio State's Will Howard — and ultimately came to an agreement with Rodgers in June. Rodgers is hard to read and has been for quite some time. Whether he plays beyond this year is anyone's best guess. But Khan is open to the idea. He, of course, wants to see how this season goes first.

Kaleb Johnson wows Steelers fans, media early into NFL career
Kaleb Johnson will be the first RB in a long time to get a second contract w/ the #Steelers. He's going to be a good one. Kaleb Johnson was a star last season for the Iowa football team. After a good freshman season with the Hawkeyes, Johnson saw his playing time dip as a sophomore, receiving only 117 carries in 2023 compared to 151 in 2022. He entered his junior season with a lot to prove, especially after a suspension kept him out of the first half of the season opener. What happened next was something no one expected. Johnson exploded in 2024, getting 240 carries and rushing for 1,537 yards and a school record 21 touchdowns while averaging 6.4 yards per carry. He was named an All-American for his efforts and was generally regarded as the second-best running back in the entire nation behind Boise State's Ashton Jeanty. That season catapulted him into NFL Draft discussions, and he was eventually taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 2025 draft. And it seems Johnson is already impressing his new team, media, and fans. The Steelers opened training camp on Thursday, where everyone got to see their first real glimpse of Johnson in the NFL, playing alongside Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf. And social media was absolutely buzzing about his performance on the opening day of training camp. Social media reacts to Kaleb Johnson at Steelers' training camp Huge run from rookie Kaleb Johnson #steelers #nfl I'm hesitant to call anything a big run given there's no pads, but one thing I'll say is Kaleb Johnson absolutely flies when he gets into open build up speed. I can't tell yinz how GOOD it feels having a RB that can hit the hole with a quick burst and Johnson. Kaleb Johnson's acceleration gets a 'woah' from the crowd as he bursts through the line for a long touchdown run. #Steelers It seems like Johnson is showing Steelers' fans what Hawkeye fans have known for a while: he's a big play threat with elite burst and acceleration. While he's still listed as the primary backup to Jaylen Warren, Johnson should see a lot of playing time in 2025 and will have a chance to battle for that starting spot very soon. Iowa fans will have a chance to see Johnson play as a Steeler for the first time on August 9, when Pittsburgh opens preseason play against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT. Contact/Follow us @HawkeyesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Iowa news, notes and opinions. Aaron Rodgers-led Steelers offense bounces back in seven shots at training camp
A-Rod to MUTH touchdown. #Steelers #NFL Aaron Rodgers' winning mentality was on display once again at Steelers training camp. At Friday's practice in Latrobe, the Steelers participated in the iconic seven-shots drill — an intense red-zone simulation where the offense lined up at the two-yard line and the defense attempted to stop them from getting in. And Rodgers' performance more than made up for yesterday's interception on the first throw of team drills. The first play attempt of seven shots was retried after a bad snap from C Zach Frazier, but Rodgers linked up with DK Metcalf for a touchdown, putting the offense up 1-0. On the next attempt, Rodgers tried to connect with Metcalf once more, but Joey Porter Jr. broke up the pass. Both sides were tied, 1-1. With a new quarterback taking center stage in seven shots, Mason Rudolph attempted a pass to WR Ke'Shawn Williams — but it was almost intercepted by Porter. Defense went up 2-1. Rudolph connected with WR Scotty Miller on the next play, tying it up 2-2. Rookie QB Will Howard then took over on offense, attempting a pass to WR Brandon Johnson — but the pass was broken up by Cory Trice Jr. Defense retook the lead, 3-2. Howard wouldn't take the defended pass lying down — hooking up with TE J.J. Galbreath on the next attempt to tie the score back up, 3-3. Out trotted the four-time MVP for one last shot to decide a winner, and Rodgers didn't flinch — connecting with TE Pat Freiermuth to give the offense the win, 4-3. It's safe to say Rodgers' second day of practice in Latrobe went exactly as planned for the 20-year veteran — who's eager to keep proving why the Steelers offense is far more dangerous than it's being given credit for.
