A hotel room in Bali that's bigger than the average Aussie home
Set on a 70m high clifftop overlooking the Pacific Ocean and a white-sand beach, Umana Bali, a villa-only resort, ticks all the boxes that make LXR properties unique. Plus, it has one of the largest standard hotel room sizes in the world.
Umana Bali has 72 one, two and three-bedroom villas. The smallest, which I stayed in, is set on a 403sqm walled plot. Most hotel villas only have plunge pools, but here you get a 41sqm ocean-facing infinity-edge pool big enough to do laps in. There is also a jet pool adjoining the day pavilion with an outdoor sofa, reflective ponds and tropical plants.
The indoor space measures 288sqm — 13 per cent more floor space than the national average for new detached houses in Australia. T
he bathroom is bigger than most hotel rooms; a vast marble chamber with a two-person bathtub set in a glass enclosure edged by a rock garden with a bas-relief on the wall. The main bedroom has sliding glass doors that open directly into the pool. Waking up in the morning and drawing the curtains to Pacific Ocean views is a rock-star experience.
But what I appreciated most was the combined living and dining room with an L-shaped sofa, coffee table, matching armchairs and a big, beautiful rug. In 25 years of travel writing, I have never seen a full-size living room in the standard room category of a hotel. Still, it pales in comparison to what awaits guests at the 1200sqm three-bedroom Umana Pool Villa. The living room is so big they had to put in a baby grand piano to consume some negative space.
All five-star hotels in Bali put on breakfast buffets fit for kings, and Commune, Umana's breakfast venue, is no exception. Set inside a traditional Balinese building with floor-to-ceiling windows that bring in 180-degree ocean views, it is an Asian-themed restaurant, and the menu reflects that, with ramen, bakso (an Indonesian soup) and sushi stations. But it also has all your standard Western or American breakfast staples and a few extravagant options, like baby lobster on sourdough toast with caviar. The French toast is thick, layered in maple syrup, and comes with two scoops of mascarpone cream on the side.
Commune is one of five F&B venues in the hotel. The signature is Olivera, a fine-dining Mediterranean restaurant. You can sit inside, in a big white modern space, or grab a table on the balcony. I had the set four-course meal but they served me seven courses, including four different kinds of amuse bouches, a world-class lobster bisque, a perfectly grilled striploin steak with red wine jus, finished with a slice of baked cream cheesecake. Normally, when I try a set menu at hotel restaurants in Bali, it's hit-and-miss. Most dishes are good but there are always one or two I don't eat. Not here. Everything was spot on. Kudos to the chef.

+ Umana Bali is on the clifftops of the Bukit Peninsula, overlooking Melasti Beach on Bali's south coast, a 35-minute drive from the international airport. At the time of writing in May, rates at hotel booking sites for a one-bedroom villa with breakfast started at $1140 per night and climbed to $6600 for the three-bedroom villa. Discounts are offered if you book directly with the hotel. Hilton.com
+ The most current Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that in 2021-22, the average floor area of new houses in Australia was 232.3sqm.

Teen pilot detained in Antarctica while attempting solo flight to seven continents
A teenage pilot, who is attempting to fly all seven continents solo, hit a patch of rough air this weekend when Chilean authorities detained him for changing his flight plan without their permission and landing in Antarctica. Chilean prosecutors say American influencer Ethan Guo, 19, broke 'multiple national and international regulations' by changing his flight plans without prior notice, landing on a part of Antarctica where the South American country maintains a territorial claim. Guo's lawyer said on Sunday the young pilot had experienced 'complications' while flying. Guo, whose website states he is trying to raise $1 million for cancer research by becoming 'the first person ever to fly to all seven continents solo', has broadcast his continent-hopping journey since last September to more than a million Instagram followers. His last post, on June 23, documents a flight over the Philippines. Chilean authorities say that on Saturday, Guo submitted a false flight plan and took off from Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Airport in the southern Chilean city of Punta Arenas as the sole passenger and crew member aboard a Cessna 182Q aircraft, registered as N182WT. At one point during that flight, authorities say he turned off course toward Antarctica. 'The accused provided false information to the aeronautical authority,' Regional Prosecutor of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Cristian Crisosto Rifo said. 'He submitted a flight plan indicating that he was going to fly over the city of Punta Arenas. 'However, he continued toward Antarctica without informing anyone and without any authorisation, landing at the airfield of Lieutenant Rodolfo Marsh Base in Chilean Antarctic territory. 'With this behaviour, the accused seriously endangered the safety of air traffic to Antarctica and the Magallanes region.' As soon as Guo landed in Antarctica, he was detained and formally charged. 'The accused not only violated the Aeronautical Code but also multiple national and international regulations regarding routes to Antarctica and access to the white continent,' Crisosto said. On Sunday, Guo's lawyer told reporters at a press conference after the teen was charged that he experienced 'complications' while flying. 'While already in the air, he began to experience a series of complications,' Karina Ulloa said, adding that Guo claims 'that he was conducting an exploratory flight to see if he could follow this route or not'. Further comment from Ulloa has been requested. The Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Prosecutor's Office determined on Sunday that the teen must remain in the Chilean sector of the frozen continent until authorities give him permission to return to the city of Punta Arenas. The Chilean court decreed a 90-day investigation period for this case, during which time Guo must remain in Chile.

This '80s Bali resort blends nostalgia with bargain-priced luxury
As part of the club benefits included with my beach-chic Mandara Club suite, the mini-bar is complimentary for a single raiding and free canapes and drinks are offered in the Suling Lounge every day from 5pm to 6pm. At 55 square metres, the suite is spacious and comfortable, but a tad dark. The only natural light is through a picture window made of glass doors with white shutters, which can be fully opened to allow for fresh air, although it lacks privacy. An oversized daybed and decor including indigo-dyed loungers and hand-woven rugs uplift the space, though mind the slippery wooden floor. Food + drink Head to Azul Beach Club for tiki-inspired cocktails and casual eats, such as grilled prawns and a mammoth charcoal-baked lobster with garlic and parsley aioli (ask for the sauce on the side) for the bargain price of IDR545,000 ($53). The venue hosts live gigs four nights a week, including reggae and salsa. Indonesian options such as sop buntut (oxtail soup) can be found at all-day Celagi restaurant. The themed nights held on the lawn every week are a nice touch, and include a Balinese cultural dinner with babi guling buffet, and a circus iteration that will likely have you in stitches. Out + about The hotel's central location on Jalan Padma is enviable, with Legian Beach directly opposite. Turn right and walk down Jalan Padma and you'll find Bali's ubiquitous sports bars, tattoo shops and typical tourist shopping. The bright lights of Seminyak are a 25-minute walk along the beach. The verdict The premise that a hotel can't be everything to everyone is a myth: this laid-back stay strikes a balance between being family-friendly and a fun hangout for couples. Essentials Mandira Club Suites from IDR5,887,500 ($577) a night. There are 48 accessible rooms. Jalan Padma No.2, Legian, Bali, Indonesia. See Loading Rating out of five ★★★★ Highlight I had the best Balinese massage of my life at the hotel's unassuming Glow Spa, and that's saying something, given I lived on the island for five years. Lowlight The hotel still uses plastic straws and early on my first morning, the gym was overrun by a group of kids under 10 who were using the space as a playground. A cruel awakening.
