Munster 'continue preparations' for December Champions Cup fixture at Páirc Uí Chaoimh
The province's participation in the 2025/26 next season's Champions Cup was confirmed after securing back-to-back bonus-point wins against Ulster and Benetton to finish 6th in the URC standings.
Plans to host a Champions Cup game at the home of Cork GAA next season were "approved in principle" by GAA Central Council back in March.
The last European Cup pool game played in Cork was in December 2002, when Munster hosted Viadana at Virgin Media Park, then known as Musgrave Park.
Both previous Munster games at Páirc Uí Chaoimh - against the Crusaders and South Africa A - were sell-outs with attendances of over 40,000.
The 41,400 attendance for the Munster v South Africa A game in November 2022 was a record crowd for rugby in the province.
'I would like to congratulate the playing and coaching group for all their hard work in recent weeks in securing two bonus-point wins which resulted in our qualification for next season's Champions Cup," Munster CEO Ian Flanagan said.
'This competition is hugely important to us and our supporters, and qualification allows us to continue our preparations for hosting a pool fixture in Cork later this year.
'While we understand that there will be those that are used to seeing our Champions Cup matches in Thomond Park, we feel we have a great opportunity to do something a little different next season.
'A lot of consideration has gone into the decision to move a Champions Cup pool game to SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh but showcasing a high-profile competitive fixture to a wider audience is a strategic goal of ours and this aligns with the feedback we have received from many of our supporters.
'Unfortunately, the December Champions Cup pool fixtures in Thomond Park have experienced falling attendances over the last two seasons and the staging of this game in Páirc Uí Chaoimh offers us the opportunity to accommodate more supporters at that match and improve our financial stability which in the current climate is imperative.'
Munster Chief Operating Officer Philip Quinn added: 'As we have seen in recent years, costs related to the running of the professional game, and indeed at all levels across the province, have increased for multiple reasons. Those costs will continue to rise rather than fall. In order to improve our financial stability and ensure we remain adequately funded, viable and competitive, we need to weigh up all opportunities which can result in increases in revenue.
'Based on our forecasts, we believe we will achieve a significant financial uplift from hosting this December pool fixture in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh compared to Thomond Park.
'In addition to this, the larger capacity of Páirc Uí Chaoimh will allow even more people to experience a competitive Munster Rugby European matchday which provides a fantastic opportunity to grow our support base, not just in Cork but right across the southern part of the province.
'We have listened to plenty of supporter feedback from our games against South Africa XV and the Crusaders and we will work tirelessly to ensure the matchday experience is of the highest quality.'

Two Ireland debutants in team to play Georgia on Saturday
Craig Casey will captain Ireland for the first time this weekend, becoming the 112th Ireland Test captain since 1875. He is only the third scrum-half to captain Ireland in the professional era after Niall Hogan (three times) and Eoin Reddan (once). Saturday's game in Tbilisi will be Ireland's 764th Men's Test and it will be broadcast live on Virgin Media. The Munster star will be leading a team selected by Men's interim Head Coach Paul O'Connell in the opening game of the two-Test Summer series on Saturday evening, against Georgia in Mikheil Meskhi Stadium, Tbilisi (kick off 9pm local, 6pm Irish time). Casey forms a half-back partnership with Sam Prendergast, with Stuart McCloskey and Jamie Osborne set to link up in midfield. Winger Tommy O'Brien will make his debut in a back three which includes his provincial colleague Jimmy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale who is set to earn his 39th cap. McCloskey, who turns 33 in August, will be the eldest Ireland player on the team. 'I don't think I'm doing a lot wrong,' he says. 'I think when I've played I've went well, it's just there's four very good centres in the lads, two of them are away [with the Lions, Bundee Aki and Garry Ringrose] and you could argue Robbie [Henshaw] would've been away as well if he wasn't injured, so I don't think I'm too far off it. 'What can I do better? Keep improving on a few things, probably a bit more physicality in defence, I think I've got most things in attack. Add a few more strings to my bow, whether that's breakdown or poach threat, but overall I don't think there's a lot in it. A few decisions go my way, I'm sitting here with a few more caps." Stockdale needs one more try to become the 21st Irish player to score 100+ points for Ireland and the first since Jack Crowley. It would also move him to Ireland's outright 6th leading try scorer and he currently shares that position with Girvan Dempsey and Geordan Murphy. The second starting debutant sees Connacht's Darragh Murray form a second-row partnership alongside Cormac Izuchukwu. McCloskey can even remember playing against O'Connell - and it was quite the memorable game: 'Ulster sent down the biggest B team of all time because it was a dead rubber at the end of the season and Munster had their best team out. I remember it very well. Michaell Heaney scored a try, they were trying to get to second and we were fourth, couldn't go up or down, it was back in the Pro12 days and we got the win, I think it was my fourth cap. 'I think Michael Allen (played with me at centre). James McKinney was at 10. Good story because the coach said 'Ah, you'll play more next season' to him and he was actually leaving that summer. McCloskey: From playing against O'Connell to being the senior man in Ireland camp
THERE'S A NOTABLY different feel to this Ireland camp for Stuart McCloskey. With so many Ireland regulars touring Australia with the Lions, McCloskey has found himself the oldest member of Paul O'Connell's 33-man squad to tour Georgia and Portugal. The Ulster centre is somewhat reluctant to embrace that senior status. 'Finlay Bealham absolutely did me in going to the Lions,' says McCloskey. 'I messaged him straightaway being like 'you've completely mugged me here, I'm the oldest now'. He [Paul O'Connell] gets a dig in most days about how old I am, but I'm still faster than all those young lads anyway, I've got a few more years left in me. I keep telling Jacob [Stockdale] and Nick Timoney I'll outlast them, so I'll get them at some stage.' The 32-year-old's international career stretches back to 2016, debuting against England as a 23-year-old on the same day a young Josh van der Flier earned his first Test cap. McCloskey even shared a pitch with O'Connell before the former Munster player – who is interim Ireland head coach for this two-game tour – announced his retirement in early 2016. Competing for a jersey in one of the most competitive areas of the squad, since that 2016 debut McCloskey has added 18 further caps – 16 of which have come under Farrell's watch. 'I don't think I'm doing a lot wrong,' he says. 'I think when I've played I've went well, it's just there's four very good centres in the lads, two of them are away [with the Lions, Bundee Aki and Garry Ringrose] and you could argue Robbie [Henshaw] would've been away as well if he wasn't injured, so I don't think I'm too far off it. 'So this Lions period the last time, when we played America and Japan, sort of springboarded me on to get a lot more caps and be a lot more involved. 'I think I've been involved in two Six Nations wins in that time and a World Cup. Hopefully I'll put a good foot forward for any games coming up over the next few years and keep my head around the place and push into the next World Cup.'
