
Celebrating Pride Cymru: A Commitment to Inclusivity and Positive Change
Events like Pride Cymru hold real significance, standing as a beacon of visibility, unity, and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community. They remind us that equality is not a passive ideal but something that must be continuously nurtured and defended. Whether through the efforts of campaigning individuals or the support of public institutions and large employers, Pride embodies the power of solidarity and progress.
Throughout my time at the Development Bank of Wales, since starting with Finance Wales in 2002, I have been incredibly proud of how we embrace equality, diversity, and inclusivity. These values are not just words in a strategy document but are actively embedded in everything we do, shaping our workplace, our partnerships, and the communities that we serve.
From the support we provide to our employees and colleagues to the entrepreneurs and business owners that we fund, we champion fairness, accountability, and transparency. The Development Bank is more than just a financial institution—we are a force for positive change, using our influence to foster an environment where everyone can thrive. Our commitment to ethics and social responsibility drives us to be purposefully engaged in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. It's not just about business; it's about doing what's right.
This commitment is clearly reflected in our recruitment strategies. In 2024/25, one-fifth of all our new starters came from ethnic minority backgrounds—well above the national average of six per cent. It's this kind of intentional inclusivity that matters, not just for our workforce but for the LGBTQ+ community and our allies. We also recognise that true inclusion goes beyond hiring; it's about continuous growth and development. That's why we prioritise personal and professional growth. Being named one of the UK's Best Workplaces for 2025 by Great Place to Work was a proud moment for us, as was receiving their Development Award—a recognition of our commitment to helping employees become the best version of themselves.
One shining example of how we support diversity in business is Freya Curtis, a determined 21-year-old entrepreneur who opened Merthyr Tydfil's first LGBTQ+ themed bar, Sparkles, with the help of a £35,000 loan from the Development Bank. Sparkles, which hosts live shows, karaoke nights, and drag performances, has quickly become a popular space for the local community—providing not only entertainment but also a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Through her vision, Freya has created a hub of celebration and connection while generating local jobs, demonstrating how empowered entrepreneurs can make a real difference.

As we come together for Pride Cymru, I'm reminded that progress is never a solo journey—it's a collective effort. We face nationalisation if we're not let off fines, Thames Water warns
Thames Water has warned ministers that it will have to be bailed out by the taxpayer if it is not let off the hook for over a billion pounds in fines for environmental pollution and other failures. Britain's biggest water company has admitted that its sewage pollution incidents increased by a third last year, to 470, and said that it had been in 'crisis mode' for two years. However, Chris Weston, its chief executive, told MPs that the company needed an exemption from the £1.4 billion in fines he expects the regulators, Ofwat and the Environment Agency, to impose for future breaches of environmental and performance rules. Asked why Thames deserved to be a special exception, Weston argued that water regulation needed to offer a reprieve for all struggling companies. 'If we don't find a solution to it, then there is a good chance that we will go into SAR,' he said, referring to a special administration regime, a type of emergency nationalisation for companies providing essential public services.

Are you an overspender or excessive saver? You might have ‘money dysmorphia'
Many people will recognise the feeling of scrolling through someone else's social media feed, observing their lavish lifestyle and wishing they had the same. This common experience, driven by the pressure to 'keep up with the Joneses', can distort our financial reality - known as 'money dysmorphia'. It manifests as a skewed perception of one's own wealth, leading to intense anxiety, guilt, and stress around spending and saving. Understanding its contributing factors is crucial for developing practical strategies to manage and overcome it. What is 'money dysmorphia'? 'Money dysmorphia is effectively when the distorted perception of one's financial health, how you feel about your money, doesn't necessarily reflect the reality,' says Matthew Parden, CEO of money management app Marygold & Co. 'This can be emotionally driven, shaped by irregular patterns or social pressures to keep up.' Money dysmorphia can lead to both overspending and excessive saving, depending on the individual's perception. 'We've worked with anxious savers, avoidant savers and people who like to spend, so there's lots of different types of personality and money dysmorphia can manifest in all of them,' says Parden. What are some signs or red flags that someone might be experiencing money dysmorphia? 'Feeling uncertain or anxious about money, even though there is no apparent or immediate shortfall in money, could be a sign of money dysmorphia,' highlights Parden. 'It could be that you avoid checking your bank statements or balances and this could be because of stress, or it could be because of a fear of what you might see in there. 'Another sign could be fluctuating between periods where you're spending a lot and reining it back and spending a little, so you kind of vacillate between overspending and underspending. Money dysmorphia could be when you are playing down your success, payments or debts and you feel that you've fallen short, that what you have isn't not enough – even though it might be sufficient.' What role does social media and societal pressures play in fuelling money dysmorphia? Social media and societal pressures can contribute to feelings of inadequacy when it comes to personal finances. 'Social media presents a curated version of life, where people are only showing the best side of financial life without providing the context,' says Parden. 'You don't see the debt, the lack of savings, the stress – that is all hidden.'It does kind of amplify these 'norms' and create unrealistic expectations. It provokes spending which is really emotionally driven and creates a constant pressure to keep up, so that even if your financial footing is secure, you still feel that you've got some way to go. And that in itself can lead to insecurity and a distorted sense of your own financial situation and reality.' Can money dysmorphia be tied to past financial trauma or upbringing? 'If you've grown up in a financially unstable environment or been through times of poverty or crisis or scarcity, that can often make people carry fear and shame around money,' reflects Parden. 'Those experiences can drive/ impact many things in your life around behaviour and emotions, and money is just one of the areas where that might manifest itself.' What consequences can money dysmorphia have? 'Money dysmorphia can often make people avoid getting involved with money and that means they are avoiding financial planning and organisation of their financial life,' says Parden.'This can lead to missed opportunities like having a safety net reserve of cash. 'You don't have any savings because you are constantly spending, you may feel like you haven't ever got enough and will consistently avoid doing it. That in itself can lead to anxiety, a sense of failure and can affect your mental and physical health.' How can someone begin to overcome money dysmorphia? Ignorance is not always bliss, especially when it comes to finances. So, be proactive and start engaging with your finances. 'Take a step back and work out what it is that may be impacting your relationship with money,' advises Parden. 'Just start with small, repeatable steps, like taking 10 minutes out of every week to look at your finances and understand what you're doing and where your money has gone and what is coming up. 'If you recognise an issue there, try not to judge yourself. Just do regular gentle reviews of your finances because that helps you start to engage with it and might help reduce the fear. It might also help you move towards bridging that gap between how you feel about your finances and actually what is true in your finances.' There are also lots of apps available that can give you a good overview of your financial life. 'If you begin to understand your finances from a behavioural aspect, that could help you identify emotional triggers that cause you to spend or save,' says Parden. 'Apps can also help you to not spend or withdraw. On the Marygold & Co app you can set a time lock and other apps have similar tools that can put a bit of friction on your spending before you make payments.' What are the benefits of having a clearer, healthier financial mindset? 'If you have a positive financial mindset and the tools, it gives you the ability to actually start saving for those things which are going to help you in your financial life, like building up cash reserves,' says Parden. 'Creating a financial plan will also help you meet your short-term and long-term objectives, whether it's saving for a wedding or for a holiday. Just engaging with your finances can have tremendous long-term benefits.'

June is Pride Month, a time you could always expect to see companies add a touch of rainbow colour to their logos and products. However, in this respect, June 2025 was far more monochrome and understated. Is this hard-fought recognition increasingly under threat? In corporate America, politicisation is already undermining diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies and values. In the UK, it's pertinent to wonder the extent to which companies (including those with US HQs) will begin to re-evaluate their support for such policies in the workplace. DEI policies have a proven track record of attracting younger generations into leading corporations and I'm not suggesting they will disappear. Certainly, it's heartening that a recent poll by the Institute of Directors (IoD) recorded that 71% of 605 UK businesses had no plans to change their DEI strategies. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Nevertheless, there remains the possibility that some companies may gradually shy away from their overt public support and affirmation of DEI, including around Pride events. Corporations (especially those with an international footprint) may start to weigh up the ramifications for any shift in their position. Will they suffer a backlash from current and prospective employees for any perceived retreat on DEI commitments? Could prospective future business and investment opportunities be curtailed - in some geographical markets - if the business continues to overtly support DEI rights? The makeup of law firms should reflect the world, which means it's important to welcome candidates from LGBT+ backgrounds (Picture: Adobe) Fortunately, in the UK, employers and employees alike will be mindful that the Equality Act 2010 prohibits any discrimination, harassment and/or victimisation in respect of certain protected characteristics (including race, gender and sexual orientation). Given the ability for UK employment tribunals to make uncapped compensation awards in instances of discrimination under the 2010 Act, I suspect employers will be wary of taking steps that could be perceived to counter existing support and protections around DEI practices. Some businesses may be tempted to tinker with their strategies but a wholesale U-turn on all matters DEI in the workplace seems very unlikely. While global heavyweights like Google and Amazon have scaled back some of their DEI initiatives, my own employer is a brilliant example of a leading business placing this at the core of its corporate identity. Indeed, I've personally thrived in an environment where you are empowered to 'Be yourself' (one of Shoosmiths' four key values) and benefit from employee networks, actively supported by the Board, focused on the advancement and celebration of DEI. Fortunately, I've discovered a law firm where I'm empowered by senior leaders to embrace my identity. Consequently, I've led various panel and roundtable discussions focused on celebrating the power of diversity in workplaces. Rachel Munro benefited from DEI policies at Shoosmiths Earlier this year I spoke about the importance of LGBT voices in the real estate industry at the MIPIM conference in Cannes. This summer, I'll proudly host a celebration of Pride for our Glasgow office. Crucially, in a move that goes far beyond just ticking a box and displaying a rainbow logo, my employer has even incorporated DEI metrics into its career progression framework. In our changing world, Pride may seem more muted this year and there may be some businesses less inclined to overtly publicise their DEI support. Yet, I firmly believe it's imperative to uphold and champion the very DEI values that enabled my younger self to flourish. We must continue to ensure thousands like me can feel empowered, safe and ultimately our true selves in business.
