Nepal investigates deadly violence in pro-monarchy rally

Al Arabiya29-03-2025

Nepal's government is investigating deadly violence that occurred during a rally by the supporters of the former king seeking the restoration of constitutional monarchy, a minister said on Saturday.
Two people were killed on Friday and at least 112 injured, including 77 security officials, authorities said, after police used force to stop the stone-throwing crowd from marching towards the parliament building in the capital Kathmandu.
Protesters vandalized homes, shops, a hospital, a political party office, vehicles and a shopping mall and snatched a weapon from the police, the authorities in the Himalayan nation said.
'This is sheer vandalism, arson, looting and anarchy. It cannot be a protest,' cabinet spokesman Prithvi Subba Gurung, the minister of communication and information technology, told Reuters.
Rishiram Tiwari, Kathmandu's chief district officer, said 105 protesters including some pro-monarchy leaders were taken into custody.
Nepal's 239-year-old monarchy was abolished in 2008 by a specially elected assembly as part of a deal with Maoist former rebels, ending an insurgency that killed 17,000 people between 1996 and 2006.
The last king, 77-year-old Gyanendra, lives as a commoner with his family in a private house in Kathmandu.
Political instability has rocked Nepal, one of the world's poorest countries, with 14 governments since the abolition of the monarchy, hampering economic growth and discouraging investment.
Public frustration has risen over the failure of successive governments to deliver on commitments to develop the economy of the country, a natural buffer between Asian giants China and India.

Trump Ends Trade Talks with Canada Hours after Sealing China Deal

The US President, Donald Trump, announced that he terminated all trade talks with Canada, after Ottawa imposed a digital services tax on American technology firms. Trump's announcement came hours after the US reached a deal with China to speed up rare-earth supplies' flow into the US, reported Reuters. Surprise Announcement On Friday, Trump said that the US had ended its trade negotiations with Canada over what he called a 'blatant attack' on his country, announcing that he would set a new tariff on Canadian goods within the next seven days. 'We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country,' he said. 'They are obviously copying the European Union, which has done the same thing, and is currently under discussion with us, also,' Trump posed on Truth Social. 'Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately. We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period,' Trump said. US-Canada Trade Talks The US and Canada have been negotiating over a trade deal for months. Canada is the US' second largest trade partner after Mexico and the largest buyer of US exports. According to US Census Bureau data, Canada imported $349.4 billion of US goods in 2024 and exported $412.7 billion to the US. In February 2025, Trump imposed tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China, over the flow of drugs and undocumented immigrants from those countries to the US, prompting the countries to respond with retaliatory measures. The Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, met with Trump at the G7 summit of world leaders in Alberta in mid-June, where both leaders agreed to pursue negotiations to reach a new economic deal within a month period. Canada Response After Trump's surprise announcement, Carney's office said that the government would resume negotiations with the US to resolve the dispute. 'The Canadian government will continue to engage in these complex negotiations with the United States in the best interests of Canadian workers and businesses,' it said. Further US Actions However, the US President told reporters at the White House that Washington would not resume negotiations with Ottawa 'until they straighten out their act,' adding that the US holds 'such power over Canada.' Furthermore, the US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, downplayed the trade dispute between the US and Canada, during an interview with CNBC. He suggested that that the US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, would probably pursue a Section 301 probe into Canada's digital tax, which would pave the way for the US to impose retaliatory tariffs amounting to the approximately $2 billion in losses incurred by American companies. US-China Deal On Friday, Bessent announced that Washington and Beijing had reached a trade agreement that would speed up American firms' access to rare earth minerals from China, according to the Associated Press (AP). He said that the agreement would reduce tariffs and ease the flow of rare-earth magnets to US companies. Two weeks ago, Trump said that Washington and Beijing had finalized a deal, which would grant the US access to the rare-earth metals it needs, while the Chinese college students would be able to attend American universities. The agreement followed talks between American and Chinese officials in London and Geneva. The Chinese Commerce Ministry confirmed the deal on Friday. 'China will, in accordance with the law, review and approve eligible export applications for controlled items. In turn, the United States will lift a series of restrictive measures it had imposed on China,' it said. More Deals Coming Trump has set July 9, 2025 as a date for countries to reach trade deals with the US to avoid facing more tariffs. However, the Trump administration has indicated that this deadline is flexible and could be extended. Earlier on Friday, Bessent said that the Trump administration is engaging in trade talks with 18 top trade partners, including the European Union (EU) and India, adding that new deals could be finalized by the Labor Day holiday on September 1. 'We have 18 important trading partners. … If we can ink 10 or 12 of the important 18, there are another important 20 relationships, then I think we could have trade wrapped up by Labor Day,' he told Fox Business Network. US Strikes May Have Only Delayed Iran's Nuclear Program: Report

A preliminary US intelligence assessment has revealed that recent strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities may have only delayed Tehran's program by months, three sources familiar with the matter shared this information with Reuters. The Defense Intelligence Agency prepared the initial report, which is one of 18 US intelligence agencies. The assessment indicates that Iran could restart its nuclear program within months. One source estimated that the earliest restart could occur in one to two months. This classified assessment contradicts statements from President Donald Trump and high-ranking US officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. They claimed the strikes effectively eliminated Iran's nuclear capabilities. On Tuesday, Trump's administration informed the UN Security Council that the strikes had 'degraded' Iran's nuclear program. This statement fell short of Trump's earlier claim that the facilities had been 'obliterated.' When asked for comment, the White House referred to spokesperson Karoline Leavitt's statement to CNN. She called the assessment 'flat-out wrong.' 'Everyone knows what happens when you drop fourteen 30,000-pound bombs perfectly on their targets: total obliteration,' Leavitt stated. Damage Assessment Remains Uncertain A US official who reviewed the assessment noted that it included several caveats and 'ifs.' This official also mentioned that a more refined report is expected in the coming days. Analysts suggest that if the assessment relied on satellite imagery, it might not reveal the full extent of damage to the deeply buried Fordo uranium enrichment facility. Trump has argued that the attacks were necessary to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. However, Iran denies seeking such a weapon, asserting that its nuclear program serves peaceful purposes. Evaluating the damage at the Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz nuclear sites presents significant challenges. The Defense Intelligence Agency is not the only agency tasked with this evaluation. One source indicated that the assessment faced disagreement and was not universally accepted. A US official, speaking anonymously, stated that the true extent of the damage remains unknown. Nevertheless, the initial assessment suggests that the strikes may not have been as successful as the Trump administration claims. Infrastructure Damage Reported The report indicates the US attack caved in facility entrances and damaged infrastructure. However, one source noted that the strike did not collapse underground buildings. Restarting operations will depend on how long it takes Iran to dig out and repair power and water supply facilities. The Washington Post reported some centrifuges for enriching uranium remained intact after the strikes. The Pentagon disputed claims that the damage was insignificant but did not deny the existence of the DIA assessment. 'Based on everything we have seen — and I've seen it all — our bombing campaign obliterated Iran's ability to create nuclear weapons,' Hegseth stated to Reuters. He emphasized that the bombs hit their targets perfectly, resulting in devastating impacts buried under rubble. However, one source indicated that Iran's enriched uranium stocks had not been eliminated. David Albright, a former UN nuclear inspector, expressed that the US attack effectively destroyed Iran's uranium enrichment program for now. However, he warned that it failed to eliminate the longer-term threat. 'Iran retains an ability to break out and produce weapon-grade uranium,' Albright stated in a post on X. He highlighted that Iran's stock of near-weapons-grade highly enriched uranium, sufficient for about nine warheads, remains unaccounted for. Ongoing Debate and Canceled Briefings Initial military assessments can evolve as more information becomes available. It is common for opinions to vary across different US intelligence agencies. Democrats have previously stated that Trump's claims about the strikes eliminating or significantly hindering Iran's nuclear program lack supporting evidence. 'There's zero evidence that I've seen that the nuclear program was completely and totally obliterated as Donald Trump has claimed,' House of Representatives Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said on Monday. Classified briefings for members of the House of Representatives and Senate regarding this matter were canceled on Tuesday. Short link : Post Views: 4

Russian Deputy FM Sees Little Opportunity in Bringing Back 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov believed that there was little chance of reviving a 2015 deal at the moment to limit Iran's nuclear program, according to Reuters. 'I do not see at the moment, conditions for restoring the (Iran deal),' Ryabkov told Izvestia, referring to the 2015 accord, known as the JCPOA. Ryabkov's remarks came during an interview held before the US President Donald Trump's announcement of an agreement for a ceasefire between both Israel and Iran. 'Now is the time to redouble our efforts to achieve to come to some decisions that would help stabilize the situation,' he added. Russia has deeply condemned and regretted US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that U.S. actions had increased the number of participants in the conflict and further fueled the tensions. Peskov also stated that it was not yet clear to which extent the nuclear facilities have been damaged and whether there was a radiation hazard. In January, Russia signed a strategic partnership treaty with Iran. However, the deal did not include a mutual defense clause. Moscow had previously warned that any military intervention by the US could destabilize the entire region and plunge it into the 'abyss'. Kremlin also revealed that US President Donald Trump had not informed Russian President Vladimir Putin in detail about his planned strikes on Iran in advanced. However, they had discussed the possibility of US military intervention in general.
