A new jewellery workshop in Asir is pairing Italian technique with Saudi traditions to train local artisans in craftsmanship.
A new training initiative in Asir is inviting Saudi artisans to hone their skills in gold and copper leaf jewellery-making through a partnership with Italy's Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School.
The programme, launched on August 1st by the Saudi Social Development Bank, is designed to combine local craft traditions with international expertise. Drawing inspiration from Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, a form of heritage art from the region recognised by UNESCO, the course offers instruction in techniques tailored to current market tastes.
The partnership was formally marked with a cooperation agreement signed between the bank and the Florence-based school, which is known for its experimental approach to contemporary jewellery.
Participants, including freelance designers and artisans, are learning to develop high-quality pieces that reflect both personal creativity and regional aesthetics. Since the larger training scheme began in 2023, more than 300 people have taken part in 15 different programmes.
Of those, a significant number have turned their designs into products - some even securing funding to expand their businesses. According to bank figures, about 30% of previous trainees have received financing, and over 150 cottage industry families have expanded operations after participating.

Industry minister, automakers discuss localizing car sheet metal production

Egypt's Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel Al-Wazir has held an extensive meeting with leading steel producers and representatives from automotive and bus manufacturing and assembly companies, as part of the state's strategy to promote local manufacturing and deepen production chains. The Monday discussions focused on exploring practical mechanisms to localize automotive sheet metal production in Egypt. Al-Wazir underlined the government's firm commitment to supporting the iron and steel sector, given its critical role in sustaining key industries—particularly the automotive industry. He stressed that localizing automotive sheet metal production is currently a top priority, as it would significantly reduce import costs, increase the proportion of local content, and enhance the competitiveness of Egyptian products in domestic and global markets. The Minister explained that the ministry is developing an integrated strategy based on two main pillars. The first pillar aims to ensure a sustainable legislative and incentive framework, alongside clear implementation plans to support long-term industrial investment. The second focuses on identifying vehicle components that can realistically be manufactured locally, supported by skilled human resources and defined timelines. Al-Wazir noted that the ministry will continue close coordination with all relevant parties—including private sector stakeholders and government institutions—to ensure the efficient and timely execution of this national initiative. He emphasised that localizing automotive sheet metal production is not only a critical step in reducing imports but also serves as a launchpad for broader efforts to expand local manufacturing of vehicle components. This will pave the way for new industrial partnerships aligned with Egypt's economic development goals. The Minister highlighted that the domestic market has solid demand that could underpin the establishment of various feeder industries. He pointed out that Egypt already produces some automotive components that are exported to international markets, reflecting the competitiveness and quality of local manufacturing. Al-Wazir also identified promising opportunities to localize additional key components—including tires, glass, and sheet metal—and affirmed that the ministry is working to capture these opportunities by fostering effective public-private partnerships and creating a supportive environment for sustainable industrial investment. During the meeting, participants reviewed the perspectives of major steel producers on the feasibility of supplying sheet metal tailored to the design and structural needs of different vehicle types. Discussions also addressed production methods for exterior sheet metal, relevant design standards, and technical specifications. The meeting further examined the strategy and estimated production volumes needed to align with the state's broader plan to localize the automotive industry. Al-Wazir announced plans to hold a larger follow-up meeting with vehicle manufacturers and feeder industries to deepen technical discussions. The goal is to ensure that local sheet metal production matches the specifications required by automotive manufacturers. He called for closer coordination between steel producers, car assembly firms, and component manufacturers to integrate supply chains and advance the localization process in line with the national vision. The Minister concluded by stating that localizing automotive sheet metal production represents a qualitative step toward increasing local content and improving the effectiveness of the incentives offered to the automotive sector. This move is expected to boost the sector's regional and international competitiveness by reducing reliance on imports, improving supply chain stability, and enhancing investor confidence in Egypt's industrial landscape—all of which support manufacturers' capacity to meet production and export targets.

Madbouly reviews progress on carbon border adjustment to boost export competitiveness

Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has reviewed the latest developments regarding the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which aims to enhance the competitiveness of Egypt's national exports by aligning them with international environmental standards. During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel Al-Wazir presented a detailed update on the implementation of the CBAM general plan, which was approved by the Cabinet in December 2024. He noted that work is currently underway to finalise sectoral plans and establish specific targets and timelines. This includes comprehensive studies of global markets for the products of targeted sectors, supported by marketing studies in collaboration with foreign trade offices and export councils. Al-Wazir highlighted ongoing efforts to identify priority economic sectors for carbon footprint reduction in the first phase, focusing on improving energy efficiency within the industrial sector. He also detailed the criteria being set to select exporting companies and factories that will receive financial support to modernise and green their production lines. A guide is being prepared to familiarise exporters and investors with the environmental standards required for exports, aiming to attract green financing for eligible companies. Additionally, an environmental registry for industrial firms is being developed to support monitoring and compliance efforts. Al-Wazir described a range of measures currently being implemented to cut emissions in the industrial sector, which form the backbone of the CBAM plan. These include carbon footprint and emissions measurement reports, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems, verification and certification procedures, and support mechanisms to help companies reduce emissions. He noted that the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality has been accredited by the National Accreditation Council, which is recognised by the European co-operation for Accreditation (EA), qualifying it as an official verification and certification body. As part of the CBAM roadmap, Al-Wazir explained, work is progressing on developing an electronic system to measure pollutants and record carbon emissions, along with establishing a national MRV system. The plan also focuses on raising environmental awareness among companies and directing their investments towards lowering carbon footprints, in line with sustainability and environmental governance standards. Further measures include providing technical support and green financing to industrial firms, helping them enter new export markets and strengthen their global competitiveness. Al-Wazir also announced the formation of a permanent committee within the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones to oversee efforts to reduce carbon emissions. This committee is responsible for designing awareness programmes for businesses on carbon-related challenges and opportunities, exploring investment in renewable energy, and conducting field visits to assess the readiness of factories and production lines. In a related meeting on Monday, Madbouly reviewed broader efforts to support and localise industry in Egypt. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to developing national industry as a cornerstone of sustainable economic development. This includes improving the business climate, simplifying procedures for local and foreign investors, fostering innovation and technological adoption in industry, and implementing plans to deepen domestic manufacturing across various sectors. Cabinet Spokesperson Mohamed Al-Homsany stated that the meeting discussed a series of measures to support industry and address existing challenges. It also covered plans to create an integrated industrial environment that enhances production efficiency and quality, and aligns with international competitiveness standards. Al-Homsany added that discussions also touched on ongoing efforts to localise and deepen national industry to achieve economic growth, greater self-sufficiency, and reduced reliance on imports, in line with the goals of Egypt's National Industry Strategy 2030. The meeting further addressed government initiatives aimed at attracting investment into the industrial sector across multiple fields.
