Former LSU HC Issues Blunt Reality Check to Brian Kelly Before Tigers' 2025 Season

Former LSU HC Issues Blunt Reality Check to Brian Kelly Before Tigers' 2025 Season

Yahoo03-06-2025
While most college football programs would be happy to finish 9-4 or 10-3, which were the results for the LSU Tigers over the last two seasons, the expectations for the SEC powerhouse are always very high. The Tigers last won a national championship in 2019 and have produced two Heisman winners in the past decade.
Since his arrival ahead of the 2022 college football season, head coach Brian Kelly has compiled a 29-11 record, but that still may not be good enough for the decision-makers inside this program.

Former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron appeared on "XL Primetime" to discuss LSU football and the lofty expectations that are likely weighing upon Kelly.
"Expectations at LSU are No. 1 or nothing! I mean, that's it! LSU expects you to win the national championship. They don't expect you to win it every year, but Coach Saban won it in his third year, Les Miles won it in his third year, and I won it in my third year.

"I think (Kelly) has a really good team, a really good quarterback in Garrett Nussmeier. He's got a tough opener in Clemson. The expectations bring on a lot of pressure, especially when you haven't won a championship yet. The pressure there is to win a championship."

Orgeron began at LSU before the 2015 season as the team's defensive line coach. He was named the interim head coach after Miles was fired early in the 2016 season. In Orgeron's third full season as the team's head coach, he led the Tigers to a perfect 15-0 record and secured LSU's fourth national championship.
Over the next two seasons, the wheels came off for the Tigers as they compiled an 11-11 record with back-to-back .500 records.
Kelly was hired as Orgeron's successor after more than a decade leading Notre Dame. In 12 years with the Fighting Irish, Kelly led the college football powerhouse to a 92-39 record.
In a recent way-too-early college football rankings, ESPN's Mark Schlabach lists the Tigers at No. 6. He believes LSU should be in the mix for an SEC championship.

LSU will begin this upcoming season on the road against Clemson on Saturday, August 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Argos place quarterback Chad Kelly on the six-game injured list

TORONTO - Nick Arbuckle will remain the Toronto Argonauts' starting quarterback for the next little while. Toronto placed incumbent Chad Kelly on the six-game injured list Saturday before its 31-17 home win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Argos had put Kelly on the one-game list through each week of the season, allowing the CFL's 2023 outstanding player to practise with the team as he recovered from a serious leg injury suffered in last year's East Division final. With Kelly sidelined, Arbuckle led Toronto to its 41-24 Grey Cup win over Winnipeg at B.C. Place. He was named the game MVP after completing 26-of-37 passes for 252 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Argos were hopeful Kelly might return following their bye week. However, Arbuckle — who has been the starter all season to this point — remained under centre for Toronto's 26-25 loss to Montreal on Thursday before leading the squad to its first home victory Saturday night. And Arbuckle will remain under centre Friday night when Toronto (2-5) visits Winnipeg (3-3) to complete the home-and-home set. 'I think it (placing Kelly on six-game list) is a smart decision,' Toronto coach Ryan Dinwiddie said following Saturday's game. 'We've got to look after Chad and the organization. 'We just can't force his hand, 'Let's play,' when we're not sure yet. When we're fully sure of the situation collectively we'll make that decision. He's willing to play but at the same time we're going to put him on the field when he's ready to play.' Kelly was on Toronto's sidelines Saturday night but Dinwiddie said there's no timeline regarding when the quarterback will make his '25 debut. 'Who knows?' he said. 'That could be week to week but he's working at it. 'He wants to be there for his brothers … he's always around and when he's around he makes us better, on or off the field. When the time comes we'll make that decision but it's got to be collectively … we have to make a decision when it's the right time and we won't make that decision until it is the right time.' Kelly missed Toronto's first nine regular-season games in 2024 due to a CFL-imposed suspension. The six-foot-one, 216-pound American returned to the Argos, completing 175-of-258 passes (67.8 per cent) for 2,451 yards with 10 TDs and eight interceptions. He earned CFL outstanding player honours in 2023 after passing for 4,123 yards with 23 TDs and 12 interceptions. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 26, 2025. Error! Euro 2025: England beats Spain in a penalty shootout after 1-1 draw to retain title

BASEL, Switzerland -- More drama, another penalty shootout and never giving up. England successfully defended its Women's European Championship title on Sunday in its own special way, thriving in high tension yet again to take down world champion Spain in a shootout in the final. Chloe Kelly lashed in her spot kick to give England a 3-1 win on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time. 'I was cool, I was composed, and I knew I was going to hit the back of the net,' said Kelly, whose goals decided a second straight Women's Euros final, and also the semifinal five days earlier. England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saved spot kicks from Mariona Caldentey and Spain superstar Aitana Bonmatí, before substitute Salma Paralluelo dragged her shot wide of goal. The defending champion won the only way it knew how at this thrilling Euro 2025. 'It was the most chaotic tournament we played,' said England coach Sarina Wiegman, who has now won three straight Women's Euros titles. England had fallen behind in the first half, fought back in the second and relied on its superb substitutes — including Kelly – just as it did against Italy and beating Sweden on penalties previously in the knockout rounds. 'I actually can't believe it myself,' Wiegman said. 'How can this happen? But it happens. We're just going to party tonight.' England leveled the score in the 57th on Alessia Russo's header from a cross by Kelly after Caldentey had given Spain the lead in the 25th finishing Ona Batlle's cross. Spain trailed for only four minutes in the entire tournament — and not for one second against England — yet could not seal its first European title against the team it beat in the World Cup final two years ago. 'I think this team deserved more. At least not living with this bitter feeling,' Spain coach Montse Tomé said in translated comments. Kelly had scored an extra-time winning goal for England at Wembley three years ago to beat Germany 2-1. In extra time Spain had good possession in the England penalty area so many times yet did not force a decisive goal. 'It was cruel,' Bonmatí told Spanish broadcaster La 1, after being named best player of the tournament. 'We played better, created more scoring chances, but in soccer sometimes that's not enough.' Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll saved spot kicks from England captain Leah Williamson and the first by Beth Mead. It was appropriate in England's memorable tournament that Mead's penalty had to be retaken under a new soccer rule that allows a second chance when a player scores by slipping and touching the ball twice. It did not matter after Hampton's saves. Arsenal attackers like scoring with perfectly placed headers from inviting crosses sent to the ideal spot. Spain took the lead Sunday with a very English goal – a full back's cross from the byline finding the head of an Arsenal player to score, on a rain-slicked field on an overcast, cloudy day. The strong Spanish flavor leading to Caldentey's opener was in the neat passing to find Athenea del Castillo in the penalty area and her vision to see Ona Batlle's direct run into space. Caldentey was in the Arsenal team that won the Women's Champions League final in May beating a Barcelona side with six starters who also lined up for Spain on Sunday. Spain used three more Barcelona players as substitutes. The Arsenal forward line in that final, Russo and Kelly, combined to tie the Euro 2025 final. Kelly's right-foot cross from the left was floated toward the head of Russo who guided the ball back toward the top corner of the Spain net. England coach Wiegman has still never before been eliminated from a Women's Euros tournament. Despite how close she came three times this month, she acknowledged after the final whistle Sunday. The top female national-team coach of her generation has a Euros hat trick after leading England to victory in 2022 and her native Netherlands to the 2017 title. Both those titles were won as the host nation team and no England senior team, men or women, had previously won a world or continental title abroad. Wiegman also extended the run of title-winning women coaches to eight Women's Euros editions across 28 years. Women were outnumbered by male coaches each time. There was royalty from both nations in the VIP box at St-Jakob Park including heirs to each throne. Prince William, the first son of Britain's King Charles, was with his daughter Princess Charlotte. He is president of the English Football Association. Also present were Princess Leonor of Spain and her younger sister, Infanta Sofía. At the 2023 World Cup final Sofia was at the game with her mother Queen Letizia in Sydney, Australia. After the game King Charles congratulated the Lionesses team on their 'sporting skill and awesome teamwork.' 'For this," the king wrote, "you have my whole family's warmest appreciation and admiration.'

They won the opener 1-0, but were shut out 2-0 Saturday and 6-0 Sunday. Arizona lost the finale as +134 underdogs as the Under (7.5) cashed. The Tigers ended their 6-game skid Sunday with a 10-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays as -113 home favorites as the Over (8.5) cashed. Diamondbacks at Tigers picks and predictions Diamondbacks 7, Tigers 5 Moneyline BET DIAMONDBACKS (+110). The Diamondbacks are in a favorable spot to take Monday's series opener in Detroit. Arizona sends Rodriguez to the mound, who's been solid on the road, allowing just 5 earned runs over his last 3 road starts (14 2/3 IP). He's coming off a strong outing, holding Houston scoreless through 6 1/3 innings. On the other side, Detroit rookie Melton makes his second career start—and first at Comerica Park—after giving up 6 earned runs in 5 innings in his debut. That home crowd pressure won't make things easier. The Tigers have dropped 7 of their last 10 games at home and enter the week struggling at the plate, hitting an MLB-worst .197 over the last 15 days. While Detroit looked better on Sunday, it's tough to trust this offense to stay hot. At plus odds, the value lies with Arizona to grab the series opener on the road. Run line/Against the spread PASS. I'm going to keep my wager to the run line. Over/Under BET OVER 9 (+100). The Over has hit in 7 of the last 8 games between the Tigers and Diamondbacks, and recent trends support more scoring Monday. The Over is 3-2-1 in Detroit's last 6 games and has cashed in 4 of Rodriguez's last 6 starts. Expect another high-scoring affair in this series opener. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win!
