Freedom at 45! How 21-year-old Gen Z can retire early

Financial freedom by 45 is achievable for Gen Z through disciplined SIP investing, portfolio diversification, and regular reviews, even without becoming ultra-rich.
Synopsis Gen Z can achieve financial freedom by 45 with wise investments. It's about choice, not extreme wealth. Start early with systematic investment plans. Diversify across large-cap, mid-cap, and gold. As retirement nears, shift to safer options like bonds. Regularly review and rebalance your portfolio. Discipline and consistency are key to success. Financial freedom is attainable with a clear plan. For Gen Z, financial freedom is not about being ultra-rich, but rather the power to choose how you live, work, and spend your time. Good news? You do not need to be a millionaire to retire early. If you are 21 today and start investing wisely, it is entirely possible to achieve financial freedom by the age of 45.
ADVERTISEMENT Unlike traditional retirement, which often starts at 60, financial freedom at 45 means that you no longer have to work to earn money. You can continue working - but only if you want. The idea is to reach a point where money no longer controls your choice.
Suppose you spend INR 50,000 per month today. With 6% average inflation, you will need approx INR 2.02 lakh/month at the age of 45 to maintain the same lifestyle - which is about INR 24.3 lakh/year. To maintain this income for next 35 years post-retirement (up to 80 years of age), you will need a retirement corpus of about INR 4.01 crore, assuming 5% post tax return on your corpus. To accumulate INR 4.01 crore in the next 24 years, you will need to invest around INR 24,221 per month through SIP (Systematic Investment Plan). This may look like a large commitment, but if you start early and remain consistent, assuming 12% annualised returns through market-linked instruments, this goal is very much achievable.

Here is how to make a strong investment portfolio which should be well diversified across:
Large-Cap Mutual Fund: Offer Stability and consistent Returns
Mid and Small-Cap Fund: Help increase your money rapidly in the long term
Beta Fund: Capture extensive market movements with more flexibility
ETF (Exchange-Traded Funds): Low cost, passive investment that tracks the indexes
Gold ETF or Sovereign Gold Bond: Protect your wealth against inflation
International Mutual Funds: Add global diversification (if aligned with your risk profile)
As you are near retirement, your focus should move from growth to protection. Gradually transition towards debt instruments, high-duration funds, bonds, and income-generating options to reduce volatility and ensure stable income. Consider:
Debt mutual funds or long-duration bonds
Fixed-income products like FDs or government bonds
Systematic Withdrawal Plans (SWPs): Get monthly income from your investments
Annuities: Provide guaranteed income after retirement
ADVERTISEMENT Your portfolio needs regular attention. It must be monitored regularly and rebalanced periodically to align with changing macroeconomic fundamentals such as inflation, interest rate cycle, global equity trends, and geopolitical risks.
ADVERTISEMENT Markets are dynamic, and so are your financial needs; reviewing your portfolio helps you identify underperforming assets, adjust asset allocation, and capitalize on new opportunities, ensuring optimal risk-adjusted returns throughout your financial journey. Regular review will keep you on track toward long-term stability and wealth creation.
Here's the formula in five simple steps:
Start early — the sooner, the better
Be consistent — invest every month, no matter what
Diversify — spread your investments across different assets class
Review regularly — adjust your plan as needed
Stay invested long-term — let compounding work its magic
ADVERTISEMENT You don't need to come from money or earn a huge salary to retire early. What you really need is a clear goal, a simple plan, and the discipline to follow through. For Gen Z, time is the biggest asset. If you start at 21, invest smartly, and stay committed — retiring at 45 isn't a fantasy. It's a realistic goal. So, is financial freedom at 45 possible? Absolutely. All it takes is clarity, consistency, and a little confidence in your future self. (The author is Group CEO & CIO – Wise Finserv Private Wealth)

ETtech Explainer: CoinDCX cyberattack — What you need to know about the $44 million crypto hack

Indian cryptocurrency exchange CoinDCX suffered a cyberattack on July 19, leading to the theft of digital assets worth around $44 million from one of its internal operational accounts. This is the second major crypto hack involving an Indian exchange within a year, following the high-profile WazirX breach in breaks down what happened and what it means for users. Q: What exactly happened at CoinDCX? A: In separate social media posts, cofounders Sumit Gupta and Neeraj Khandelwal said that the exchange experienced a server-side breach targeting an internal account used for liquidity provisioning, a process where the platform maintains crypto reserves to ensure smooth transactions for users. The hackers siphoned off $44 million worth of crypto assets in what the company described as a 'sophisticated' attack. Q: How did the company respond? A: CoinDCX clarified that no customer funds were affected as user assets were stored separately in secure cold wallets. The company immediately isolated the compromised systems and temporarily suspended its Web3 services to contain the breach. INR deposits, withdrawals, and centralised trading remain fully operational. CoinDCX said it will absorb the entire loss from its own treasury. Q: What is being done to recover the stolen funds? A: CoinDCX's internal security and operations teams are working with cybersecurity partners to investigate the breach, plug vulnerabilities, and trace the stolen assets. The company is also coordinating with a partner exchange to block and potentially recover the funds. In addition, CoinDCX plans to launch a bug bounty programme to strengthen its defences. Q: How did users react? A: The breach triggered widespread concern and panic among users, who flooded social media with queries about the safety of their funds. The sudden spike in traffic caused heavy load on CoinDCX's servers, particularly those handling portfolio-related APIs. The company later said it had provisioned additional server capacity to address the issue. Also Read: CoinDCX cyberattack: here's what we know about the crypto hack so far Q: What is CoinDCX and who are its investors? CoinDCX is one of India's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, founded in 2018 by Gupta and Khandelwal. It allows users to buy, sell, and trade a wide range of cryptocurrencies. The platform gained traction during the 2020–21 crypto boom and became India's first crypto unicorn in August 2021 after raising $90 million in a round led by Facebook cofounder Eduardo Saverin's B Capital. Other investors of CoinDCX include Coinbase Ventures, Polychain Capital, Jump Capital, Pantera Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, and Steadview Capital. It is currently valued at around $2.3 billion and has over 1.6 crore registered users. Q: What services does CoinDCX offer? CoinDCX provides a suite of products for both retail and institutional users. The CoinDCX app is built for beginners to easily invest in digital assets, while CoinDCX Pro caters to advanced traders with access to professional tools. The platform also introduced a Web3 mode within its app last year, giving users access to over 50,000 tokens. Additional offerings include CoinDCX Earn, which enables users to earn passive income on crypto holdings. It also has CoinDCX Ventures, a fund that backs early-stage Web3 and blockchain startups. Q: Is this the first major hack involving an Indian crypto platform? A: No. The WazirX hack in July 2024 remains the largest known cyberattack on an Indian crypto exchange. Hackers targeted one of its multi-signature (multisig) wallets, leading to losses of over $230 million, or nearly 45% of investor funds held on the platform. The attack was later linked to North Korea–affiliated groups, including the Lazarus Group. Q: Where does the crypto industry stand in India in terms of regulations and legality? A: The crypto industry in India exists in a legal, but largely unregulated space. While holding and trading cryptocurrencies is not banned, there is no overarching regulatory framework. The government has imposed a 30% tax on crypto income and a 1% tax deducted at source (TDS) on transactions involving virtual digital assets (VDAs), which dampened trading activity. The Reserve Bank of India remains critical of private cryptocurrencies, citing concerns over investor protection and financial stability. In 2023, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) issued show-cause notices to nine offshore exchanges for failing to comply with anti-money laundering norms applicable under existing laws. Q: What are some other recent major crypto hacks globally? A: Earlier this year, Iran's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Nobitex, lost over $90 million in a cyberattack amid rising geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran. According to blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, the stolen funds were transferred to addresses bearing messages that criticised Iran's Revolutionary Guard. In June, US-based crypto exchange Coinbase suffered a data breach that exposed customer information. Hackers used the stolen data to carry out social engineering attacks aimed at stealing user funds. They also demanded a $20 million ransom in exchange for not leaking the data and halting further attacks. The estimated financial impact ranged between $180 million and $400 million. Q: What does this mean for crypto users in India? A: The CoinDCX incident highlights the security risks in the crypto ecosystem, even as platforms adopt more mature safety infrastructure. While the company's action of securing user funds and absorbing the losses is being viewed positively, the breach adds pressure on Indian crypto exchanges to strengthen security protocols and improve operational transparency. Q: Why do hackers target crypto platforms? How do hackers use stolen funds? A: Crypto platforms are lucrative targets because they handle large volumes of high-value digital assets, offer relative anonymity through blockchain transactions, and often have weaker security controls compared to traditional financial institutions. Once stolen, funds are typically laundered through crypto mixing services like Tornado Cash, which obscure transaction origins and destinations, making recovery difficult for investigators.

Why Millennials And Gen Z Prefer Cafés Over Traditional Restaurants

Last Updated: Millennials and Gen Z don't just want to eat out, they want to belong somewhere. And cafés, with their warm lights, good brews, and open vibes, offer just that. The café culture in India is brewing hotter than ever, and it's not just about coffee anymore. For Millennials and Gen Z, cafés have become the new cultural hubs, spaces where lifestyle, work, creativity, and connection seamlessly blend. From aesthetically pleasing interiors to flexible workspaces and innovative menus, cafés are replacing the formality of traditional restaurants with an experience-first approach that resonates deeply with today's youth. 'Millennials and Gen Z have redefined dining culture, increasingly favoring cafés over traditional restaurants," says Rajat Jaiswal, Pilot and Co-founder, WAB Cafe and Keydroid. 'This shift is driven by lifestyle choices, social habits, and evolving work patterns that align more with the casual and versatile nature of cafés." He highlights that the informal, flexible vibe of cafés makes them ideal for everything from solo productivity to social catch-ups. With simpler, more affordable menus and photogenic spaces that suit their social media habits, cafés are exactly what younger consumers are looking for. 'It's more than just food, it's an experience," he adds. The Rise of Café-First Hospitality Rajan Sethi, Managing Director, Bright Hospitality Pvt. Ltd., echoes this sentiment, having witnessed the evolution firsthand. 'Over the past decade, we have seen a clear shift in how Millennials and Gen Z approach dining, and cafés have naturally become the spaces they gravitate toward," he says. Sethi's brands, like Espressos Anyday and OMO – Soul Food Community, are built around this café-first mindset. 'With Espressos Anyday, we've created an everyday café that feels like your own corner in the city," he explains. 'Whether you're working solo or brainstorming with friends, the vibe is intentionally casual yet inspiring." Meanwhile, OMO takes it a step further by merging food and philosophy. 'OMO is for people who want their dining spaces to align with their values—offering grounding meals, seasonal ingredients, and a calm, conscious atmosphere," Sethi says. The rise of the 'laptop and latte" work culture, particularly in metros like Delhi and Gurgaon, has made cafés a modern-day second home and office. Social, Sensory, Shareable What's also redefining this space is the experiential element. According to Rajat Agarwal, CEO of Barista Coffee, 'At Barista, coffee is more than just a beverage, it's a lifestyle and cultural experience, especially for Millennials and Gen Z." He points out that these generations crave connection, ambiance, and self-expression. Barista caters to this demand with curated offerings like Coffee Bubble Tea, Iced Tiramisu Latte, and live brewing sessions, trendy, flavorful, and highly Instagrammable. 'Through experiential marketing, playful menus, and community-driven spaces, we've made Barista a go-to destination where coffee culture meets contemporary lifestyle," Agarwal says. It's not about fancy dining, but about engaging environments that balance affordability with innovation. A Safe, Creative, Comfortable Space Shreya Ghai, owner, Bean & Coffee Kitchen, beautifully sums up the emotional value cafés offer: 'For Millennials and Gen Z, a café isn't just a place to eat or drink, it's an extension of their lifestyle. It's where work happens, friendships grow, passions are explored, and everyday moments become memorable." She emphasizes that what people seek today is comfort without formality, creativity without judgment, and connection without pressure. 'It's about being surrounded by warm lights, familiar faces, and the quiet hum of inspiration," Ghai shares. 'At Bean & Coffee Kitchen, the stories shared at every table are as important as the food on it." The Bottom Line What we're witnessing is not just a shift in dining preferences but a broader cultural evolution. Cafés have emerged as the modern-day living rooms, creative studios, and informal workspaces for younger generations. They combine aesthetics, affordability, flexibility, and community, qualities that traditional restaurants often lack. In short, Millennials and Gen Z don't just want to eat out, they want to belong somewhere. And cafés, with their warm lights, good brews, and open vibes, offer just that. view comments First Published: July 20, 2025, 16:28 IST News lifestyle » food Why Millennials And Gen Z Prefer Cafés Over Traditional Restaurants Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
