Malaysia positioned to lead Asean in cyebersecurity, says Kaspersky

SINGAPORE: Malaysia ranks highly in cybersecurity readiness within Asean, according to global cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.
Kaspersky's general manager for Southeast Asia, Yeo Siang Tiong, said Malaysia has demonstrated strong capabilities in managing and addressing cyber threats, positioning the country to lead the region in this critical field.
"My observation is based on several factors. One clear indicator is the Cyber Security Act 2024, which came into effect on Aug 26, 2024. It identifies critical industries and establishes a regulatory framework for cybersecurity.
"The second factor is the country's capabilities and resources. Malaysia has a large pool of cybersecurity professionals and threat researchers. Third, there is strong public awareness, with effective outreach programmes led by CyberSecurity Malaysia and the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA), which have shown significant progress," he told Bernama at GITEX Asia 2025 today.
Yeo also pointed out that as the host of the Asean Chairmanship 2025, Malaysia is playing an increasingly pivotal role in uniting regional efforts to enhance cybersecurity.
"Malaysia is leading the Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), where cybersecurity is a key foundational pillar.
"As cybercriminals know no boundaries, DEFA enables Malaysia to coordinate with other Asean nations to prevent the escalation of cybercrime in the region," he added.
When asked about the upcoming Malaysia Cyber Security Strategy (2025–2030), Yeo outlined four key pillars designed to strengthen national cyber defence.
"First is building resilience, not just to withstand attacks but to recover from them. The second pillar is immunity, where we advocate our concept of 'cyber immunity.'
"Third is awareness, which remains essential, and lastly, intelligence—focusing on countering cyber threats, including those from organised crime groups targeting critical infrastructure, government, and the supply chain," he explained.
Kaspersky made its debut as the first Cyber Immunity Partner at GITEX Asia 2025, held from Apr 23 to 25 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.
GITEX Asia is part of the GITEX GLOBAL series, the world's largest technology exhibition and startup showcase.

Laos makes global call for stronger domestic resource mobilisation

Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith addresses the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, Spain. VIENTIANE: The government has called for greater efforts to strengthen domestic resource mobilisation as a key step towards achieving sustainable development and reducing reliance on foreign aid. Speaking at the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, Spain, taking place from June 30 to July 3, Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith said Laos is reforming its public finance system and increasing tax collection through digital technology, human resource development, and improved budget management. The government has set an ambitious target to raise tax revenue to 20 percent of gross domestic product by 2030. In the first six months of this year, tax collection rose by 4.3 percent and accounted for 11.7 percent of GDP, according to a report presented at the National Assembly's recent ordinary session. During the conference, Saleumxay addressed a high-level roundtable meeting on domestic resource mobilisation and allocation. He said that for least developed countries such as Laos, building effective tax systems is vital to meeting national development needs and reducing reliance on external loans and grants. He urged development partners and the international community to provide greater financial and technical support, including help to strengthen human resources and international tax cooperation, to enhance domestic financing capacity. The deputy prime minister also spoke during the conference's general debate, delivering remarks on behalf of Asean and Laos. He expressed strong support for the adoption of the Seville Commitment, the final outcome document of the conference, which lays out shared goals to close financing gaps, tackle inequality, and drive progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Saleumxay reaffirmed Asean's priorities in building future-ready economies through inclusive participation and sustainability, upholding multilateral trade under World Trade Organisation rules, and advancing regional industrial development and energy connectivity. He highlighted Laos' ongoing efforts to graduate from Least Developed Country status and pursue closer integration with the regional and global economy. Laos is aligning its national strategies with international development goals, he said, and called for continued support from global partners to ensure long-term progress. The conference brings together leaders and representatives from 179 countries. Previous meetings took place in Mexico in 2002, Qatar in 2008, and Ethiopia in 2015. The opening ceremony on June 30 was graced by His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, who delivered an address. The meeting then continued under the co-chairmanship of Spain's Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The Seville Commitment was officially adopted and will serve as a roadmap for future international cooperation in financing sustainable development. - Vientiane Times/ANN

ROME: Italy is looking to Malaysia as a partner in its quest to enhance economic and trade sectors, according to Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani. Tajani, who also serves as the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, highlighted Malaysia as one of the most progressive nations with whom Italy has been building partnerships in these sectors. "The relations between Italy and Malaysia have always been good. Now, we look to build it further," he said during a courtesy call to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He echoed Anwar's earlier remarks on the importance of peace and stability as the foundation to support and grow the business sector. "We have many big companies and we are ready for joint ventures and investments abroad. Italy is also the second most industrious country in Europe," he added, noting that Italy has much to offer. Anwar stated that Malaysia is an excellent partner, given its "dynamic and clarity" in policies. "We have been talking about expanding our cooperation in various fields, including relations between Asean and the European Union,' he added. Anwar mentioned discussions on regional and global conflicts, including those in Gaza, Ukraine, Iran, and Israel. He also expressed his admiration for Italy's rich history, literature, and art, sharing how Dante's Inferno, the song Caruso, and Leonardo Da Vinci's works have impacted the world, drawing applause from the Italians present.
