SPIEF Announces Growing Influence of BRICS Media in World

Yara Sameh
Representatives of TV BRICS media partners – China Central Television (CCTV) and TV BRICS Africa – took part in the session "BRICS Media: Defending Free Speech and Promoting an Alternative Cultural and Information Agenda" at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), according to TV BRICS.
Among the speakers was Maria Zakharova, official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The diplomat emphasised that the media space of the BRICS countries is based on the principles of respect, objectivity, and national specificity.
"BRICS does not simply defend the right to freedom of speech – our association implements it through broadcasting channels, cultural forums, student exchanges, scientific platforms, social networks and, of course, through such meetings. [...] We are humanity, we are the voice of a free and diverse future", she said.
Zakharova added that the Kazan Declaration of the 16th BRICS Summit emphasises the need to ensure free and open access to reliable information.
Wang Bin, Head of CCTV's Eurasian bureau, noted that the BRICS countries, combining economic potential and cultural diversity, are striving for common development and already represent a significant force in the world today. According to him, China Media Group is actively expanding its global presence, focusing on promoting the country's traditional culture.
"The media of the BRICS countries base their work on the principles of openness, inclusiveness and mutually beneficial cooperation. [...] We tell one common story, but from different points of view. This is the true freedom of speech," said Wang Bin.
In turn, Ayanda Hollow, President of TV BRICS Africa, said that Africa occupies a strong position in BRICS, actively interacting with member countries and partners of the association. He called for strengthening communication. This, he said, will allow more people to learn about the life and values of the group's member states.
CGTN presenter Zheng Junfeng also shared his views on media cooperation in BRICS in an exclusive interview at the TV BRICS studio in the Roscongress International Cooperation Area at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025. He noted that the growing power of Russia, China and other developing countries is contributing to the expansion of their influence in the global information field.
The journalist emphasised the importance of intercultural exchange and information dialogue, adding that TV BRICS is successfully fulfilling its role as a communication platform within the expanding association.

Russia has amassed 110,000 troops near strategic Ukrainian city, Kyiv says

CNN — Russia has amassed 110,000 troops in the vicinity of Pokrovsk as part of its efforts to take over the strategic eastern Ukrainian city, the Ukrainian military chief said Friday. Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Friday that the area around Pokrovsk was the 'hottest spot'along the 1,200-kilometre (745 miles) front line which runs across the east. Russian forces have been trying to capture Pokrovsk for almost a year, staging one grinding offensive after another. But despite having a clear advantage in terms of the number of troops and weapons available, Moscow has failed to take over the city. Pokrovsk is a strategic target for Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin has made it clear that his goal is to seize all of the eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk his forces partially occupy. Kyiv and its allies accuse Russia's President Vladimir Putin of stalling on peace efforts so that his forces can seize more Ukrainian territory. Although not a major city, Pokrovsk sits on a key supply road and railroad that connect it with other military hubs in the area. Together with Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, it forms the backbone of Ukrainian defenses in the part of Donetsk region that are still under Kyiv's control. Some 60,000 lived in Pokrovsk before the war, but the majority have left in the three years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Ukraine's last operating coking coal mine was in Pokrovsk and many of its employees were staying in the area to keep it going. Once it was forced to shut down early this year, they too began to leave. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a US-based conflict monitor, said late last year that Ukrainian defensive operations in Pokrovsk have forced Russia to abandon its original plan to take over Pokrovsk in a frontal assault. Residents walk next to an apartment building hit by Russian military strikes in Pokrovsk onApril 23, 2025. Nina Liashonok/Reuters The ISW said this was because Ukrainian troops began using drones as integral part of their defensive strategy, successfully integrating drone operators with their ground forces. At the same time, Russia was unable to increase the number of troops in the area by much, because it was trying to contain the surprise incursion of Ukrainian troops into its own territory in the southern Kursk region. Syrskyi told reporters last week that at one point, the Kursk operation pulled back nearly 63,000 Russian troops and some 7,000 North Korean troops. 'This allowed us to weaken the enemy's pressure on the main fronts and regroup our troops. And the enemy's capture of Pokrovsk, announced back in September 2024, has not yet taken place, thanks in part to our Kursk operation,' he said. Instead of continuing to attacking the city directly, Russian troops then began encircling the city from south and northeast. The ISW said in its most recent assessment on Friday that Russian forces were continuing assaults with small fireteams of one to two soldiers, sometimes on motorcycles, in all-terrain vehicles and buggies. In a statement issued on Friday, Syrksky said Russia continued to try to break through to the administrative border of the Donetsk region. 'They want to do this not only to achieve some operational results, but primarily for demonstrative purposes. To achieve a psychological effect: to put the infamous 'foot of the Russian soldier' there, plant a flag and trumpet another pseudo-'victory',' he said.

Ukraine, Russia exchange another group of POWs - War in Ukraine

Ukraine and Russia exchanged a new group of captured soldiers on Thursday, the latest in a series of prisoner swaps agreed at peace talks in Istanbul earlier this month. Neither side said how many prisoners were released in the latest exchange. The two countries pledged to swap at least 1,000 soldiers each during their direct meeting in Istanbul on June 2, but no follow-up talks have been scheduled. The return of prisoners of war and the repatriation of war dead have been among the few areas of cooperation between the warring sides since Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022. "Today, warriors of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service are returning home," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media. He shared images of Ukrainian soldiers draped in blue-and-yellow national flags, smiling and tearfully embracing. "The vast majority of the defenders released today had been held captive for more than three years," Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said. "Many of them were captured during the defence of Mariupol," it added. The gruelling siege of Mariupol at the start of Russia's 2022 offensive is seen one of the most brutal battles of the conflict. Russia said its soldiers had been transferred to Belarus and were receiving "psychological and medical care". "Another group of Russian servicemen has been returned from territory controlled by the Kyiv regime," the defence ministry said in a statement. It posted a video showing freed Russian soldiers draped in their national flag, chanting "Russia, Russia, Russia!" Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
