Alon Day will make his return to the Nascar Xfinity Series in late August at Portland International Raceway. Nascar's first Israeli-born racer will pilot Sam Hunt Racing's second entry as Day will make his debut with the Toyota-backed team.
"I'm very thankful for the opportunity to go back racing in Xfinity again with SHR, especially after such a rollercoaster year for me, from the low of the crash in Chicago to the recent success I've had in ARCA," Day, the winningest driver in Nascar Euro Series history, said.
Chicago-based Jet Support Services Inc., which began to partner with Day last year, will continue its support of the Israeli racer and serve as the primary sponsor of the No. 24 Toyota.
'Alon has been tearing up the racetrack in his last two ARCA Menards Series races this season, with a second-place and third-place finish, respectively," Neil Book, president and CEO of JSSI, said. "As Alon builds on his remarkable success this summer, we are proud to stand behind him as he continues his streak of excellence on the track and makes a significant impact off the track.'
JSSI has sponsored Day in a pair of ARCA Menards Series races this year with Venturini Motorsports. Day finished second and third, respectively, in his first two races in the No. 25 car. He'll also compete in the ARCA race at Portland that coincides with the Xfinity Series event, along with the preceding event at Watkins Glen.
But to compete at Lime Rock Park in June, Day had to safely maneuver throughout a warzone to get to America. Iran was firing ballistic missiles at Israel in the midst of the 12-Day War. To safely leave the country, he had few choices and ended up taking a boat to Cyprus, a roughly 30-hour ride in the Mediterranean Sea. Fortunately, he made it to Cyprus and took a flight to America.
'I'm truly lucky and grateful to have JSSI believing in and trusting me throughout this whole journey in Nascar,' Day said. 'And I will give everything I have to achieve the best possible results in Friday's ARCA race and, especially, in Saturday's Xfinity race, and to bring the JSSI Toyota home with the strongest finish we can.'
Day attempted two Xfinity Series races last year with Alpha Prime Racing. During practice for his first attempt at the Chicago Street Course, a radio malfunction prevented him from hearing his spotter, leading to a collision with the stalled No. 7 car of Justin Allgaier. He later qualified for Watkins Glen, where he ran around 20th for much of the race before a brake failure ended his day in 36th.
Day first roared onto the Nascar national series scene in 2016, when he competed for a win at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in an old Carl Long-owned Dodge. He was in the top five until he was hit late in the race, and his strong showing attracted enough attention for him to make his Cup Series debut in 2017 at Sonoma with BK Racing. Ever since, he's focused mostly on racing in Europe with an occasional race in America.
'It's extremely exciting for us to have Alon drive one of our Toyota GR Supras at the upcoming Portland race,' team owner Sam Hunt said. 'Alon is great to have around, and more than deserving of the opportunities and recognition coming his way. He's an extremely talented road racer, but more importantly a great human. His path to be here is that of a true journeyman, and we are proud to partner with JSSI to provide him with this opportunity in the Xfinity Series.'
Hunt's No. 24 car is a part-time entry, which has been driven by Corey Heim, Tyler Reddick, Ryan Truex, Jeffrey Earnhardt, Patrick Staropoli and Kaz Grala this year. Heim has the car's only top-10 finish, with an eighth-place finish at Bristol. Meanwhile, the team's full-time No. 26 car of Dean Thompson has a top five and five top 10s through 21 races.
The Pacific Office Automation 147 at Portland is on Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET on The CW.

Bubba Wallace Can Start Believing In Himself After Brickyard Win

Did Bubba Wallace silence the doubters with his victory Sunday at the Brickyard 400? No. They will never be silenced, but only one of those doubters matters. And that's Wallace himself. A driver who has made no secret about his difficulty handling the pressures of NASCAR Cup Series racing, Wallace admitted he had those doubts near the end of the race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway — a race that is considered by many as one of the sport's crown jewel events. "I'll say those last 20 laps, there was ups and downs of telling myself, 'You're not going to be able to do it,'" Wallace said. "I hate that I'm that way." Wallace rode a 100-race winless streak into Indianapolis, and the win was the third of his Cup career. It was his first in a regular-season race and it vaulted him into the playoffs. He signed a contract extension late last season and knows that the expectations are for him to win since he's driving for Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan. "Not being able to do it for almost three years, you really start to doubt yourself and wonder like, 'Is this it? After the contract's up, is this it?'" Wallace said. "I've still got a couple years left, but hopefully this gives me another year at least." The 31-year-old Wallace, whose son was born 10 months ago, has seemed to have a more balanced mindset this year. That's a mindset that doesn't let the frustrations of a bad performance (or a performance that didn't match the capability of the car) eat at him throughout the week. But make no mistake, having not won in nearly three years had to gnaw at Wallace. His teammate, Tyler Reddick, won the regular-season title and was one of the four championship finalists last year. Wallace failed to make the playoffs. Any driver who is on a 100-race winless streak will certainly face criticism about whether they still deserve a job. Wallace, as the only Black driver in the NASCAR Cup Series, gets scrutinized more about whether being Black helps him keep a ride. For context, as a woman, Danica Patrick faced similar criticism when she raced in NASCAR. "Does anybody know where the goal post got moved to now?" Wallace said after the race. "Did it get moved yet? [My win] is rigged?" Wallace has competed in Cup for eight seasons. In most pro sports, competing at the top level for that length of time would be considered a solid career. But in NASCAR, drivers are judged by wins and championships and any who can't remain in contention on a weekly basis get labeled as mediocre talent. Wallace has never rattled off the wins that would make someone look at him as a championship contender. But not every driver is going to be one. With three Cup wins, Wallace has as many (or more) Cup victories than 19 of the 35 other full-time drivers. Based on that stat, he has had a better career than half of his competitors. His victory last Sunday shows that he belongs in the Cup Series. He can start believing it now. Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. New York Rep. Jerry Nadler draws a primary opponent challenging him on age

Rep. Jerry Nadler, the dean of the New York congressional delegation, is getting a primary challenger for next year — and it's not from the Democratic Socialists of America. Liam Elkind, a 26-year-old who started an organization during the Covid-19 pandemic that delivered food and medicine, is pitching his run as 'respectfully asking' Nadler to retire. He told CNN that he no longer thinks the 78-year-old Nadler has the energy nor mindset that Democrats need to respond to President Donald Trump and to rebuild their own party. 'There has to be a way of both honoring the 49-year-political career of someone like Jerry Nadler while asking him to build a bridge to the future,' Elkind told CNN. Elkind is coming into the race with the promise of heavy financial backing, including from LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. Among the local political figures backing him are Dan Doctoroff, who served as a deputy mayor under Michael Bloomberg, and former City Councilman Rafael Espinal, who told CNN, 'This isn't about removing Nadler, but about who is the best person to carry the baton.' Nadler began his political career representing the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the State Assembly, and has been in Congress since 1992. He retains deep loyalty with voters and local politicians, and after handily winning a 2022 primary that pitted him against a fellow incumbent in a redrawn district, he represents the Upper West and Upper East sides as well as Midtown. Elkind grew up in Nadler's district and is now living in an apartment in Chelsea, within the district. He'll do that while completing a Ph.D. he began as a Rhodes scholar at Oxford, writing a dissertation about the effects of campaign finance reform on elections. Part of his decision to run, Elkind told CNN, was a conversation he had with Nadler this spring at a local political event. 'What's the plan?' Elkind says he asked about Trump, and says the congressman responded by saying that the president's tariffs will crash the economy and hand Democrats the midterms. 'For a man I respected, a man I grew up voting for, it felt like such an un-strategic take,' Elkind said. A Nadler spokesman called this a passing conversation at an event that wasn't a time to talk strategy. He pointed to the congressman's questioning of Trump officials at House hearings last week and headlining a rally in New York on Monday to criticize the Israeli government's conduct of the war in Gaza as just the most recent evidence of his engagement. 'Congressman Nadler will stake his record of accomplishments against anyone,' said Rob Gottheim. 'Unfortunately, with this individual, I don't think there's any record to speak of.' Nadler is 'going to serve until he doesn't,' Gottheim added. 'He feels he is an effective member of Congress.' Others in the district have been gearing up for congressional runs when Nadler retires, but not to run against him. Disagreements with Mamdani Elkind said he ranked Democratic mayoral primary winner Zohran Mamdani fifth on his own ballot last month. He disagrees with the democratic socialist on issues including freezing rents and government-owned grocery stores, and for his declining to condemn the phrase 'globalize the intifada.' (Elkind noted that he is Jewish himself.) But Elkind said the focus on affordability and a new approach to politics is much of what's on his mind too. Meanwhile, Nadler's endorsement of Mamdani the day after the primary — done in part, people involved previously told CNN, to quiet primary concerns and connect with the direction Democratic voters chose — has backfired among some of the district's more moderate and Jewish voters who are upset he gave cover to the 33-year-old assemblyman. 'It's hard for me to imagine a better remedy for the problems that ail us in this country today than to bring the kind of leadership that Liam will bring into the arena of public issues,' Dan Weiss, the former president and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, told CNN. CORRECTION: This story has been corrected to reflect that Elkind now lives within New York's 12th Congressional District, not that he intends to move into the district.
