Teenager pleads guilty to assaulting teacher

by AKMAR ANNUAR
A 14-YEAR-OLD student pleaded guilty at the Magistrates' Court on July 30 to a charge of assaulting his teacher at a secondary school earlier this week.
The incident, which occurred on July 28, involved the teenager — currently in a transition class — punching his teacher in the face following a disciplinary reprimand. The case has drawn public attention after a 38-second video of the altercation was widely circulated on social media.
Magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil postponed sentencing to Sept 11 to allow time for the Social Welfare Department (JKM) to prepare a character report.
The boy was accompanied by both his parents during the closed-door proceedings. His mother appeared visibly distressed as they entered the courtroom.
According to the charge, the student intentionally caused injury to the teacher at approximately 4.48pm on the school premises.
The charge was framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of one year's imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Muhammad Syafiq Mohd Zulbahrin proposed bail be set at RM5,000, citing the seriousness of the offence and its widespread attention online.
'The case has gone viral and involves an assault on a teacher during school hours,' he said.
However, defence counsel S Priyalatha requested a lower bail, stressing that the teenager is still in school and falls under the category of a young offender.
'My client is 14 years old, still in school and he is a juvenile under the law. I request a lower bail amount so as not to burden the family,' she told reporters outside the courtroom.
The court subsequently allowed bail at RM1,000 with one surety.
Kajang District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof confirmed the arrest, saying that the altercation occurred after the teacher reprimanded the student for skipping physical education class.
The teacher, a 29-year-old man, lodged a police report at 7.15pm the same day.
Initial investigations revealed that the student was expected to be on the school field during the class session but was absent, prompting the confrontation.

Mall assault: Classmates attacked teen over how he spoke, say cops

KUALA LUMPUR: The Form One student assaulted at a Kajang mall was targeted over his classmates' dissatisfaction with his communication and behaviour. Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said the remand for the four 13-year-old students was extended for one more day until tomorrow. "The students were released on police bail today after the documentation and investigation process were completed. "So far, nine witness statements have been taken, including those from the four students who were arrested. "The suspect, a classmate of the victim, was dissatisfied over how the complainant communicated and interacted with classmates," he said when contacted today. Four male students were detained after the victim, who is also a Form One student at a secondary school in Kajang, lodged a police report after being beaten by a classmate at 11am on July 30. The case is being investigated under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code as well as Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

Four teens freed on bail in Kajang assault case

KUALA LUMPUR: Four 13-year-old students detained over the alleged assault of a classmate at a shopping mall in Kajang have been released on police bail today. Kajang district police chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof said the remand for the suspects, which was initially extended until tomorrow, was concluded earlier following the completion of documentation and investigative procedures. 'To date, police have recorded statements from nine individuals, including the four students,' he said in a statement. Preliminary investigations suggest the incident was triggered by dissatisfaction among the suspects with the victim's manner of communication and interaction. On July 30, the Form One student lodged a police report alleging classmates beat him at about 11 am at the mall. He later received medical treatment and was confirmed to have sustained minor facial injuries. The case is being investigated under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation, as well as Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955. - Bernama

Immigration raid of Petaling Jaya restaurant and bar leads to arrests

PETALING JAYA: An immigration raid at a restaurant and bar here led to the arrest of 11 foreigners. The operation on Friday (August 1) followed a week-long surveillance and public complaints. "During the raid, all foreigners at the premises attempted to flee and hide to avoid capture. Around 20 people were inspected, and 11 Sri Lankans, including nine women and two men, were caught," the Immigration Department said in a statement on Saturday (Aug 2). Checks showed that none of those caught were victims of human trafficking, based on the National Guideline on Human Trafficking Indicators (NGHTI) 2.0. "Preliminary investigations showed no signs of exploitation towards the women, and no offences under the Atipsom Act 2007 were identified. "All the women arrested were between 20 and 33 years old and had worked at the premises for around a year with a pay of RM2,000 a month. Based on their verbal confessions, almost all passports were held by their employer before they were allowed to work there. "The modus operandi showed that the Sri Lankan women were hired as servers to entertain customers," it said. Checks also showed that the premises had been raided multiple times in the past, with action taken by the authorities. However, operations continued. "All those arrested have been brought to the KLIA depot for further investigations and action," it said.
