Marks and Spencer launch 'game-changing' strawberry and cream sandwich but Brits are divided

Daily Record26-06-2025
The limited-edition treat, inspired by Japanese "sweet sandos," has been called both "delicious" and "puke-inducing"
Sweet and savoury can be a hit or a miss for some people, but one leading UK supermarket is hoping it will be a smash hit for foodies across the country, with the release of its first-ever summer dessert sandwich.
Marks and Spencer has unveiled the limited-edition Strawberry & Creme Sandwich, billed as a "game-changing sweet, creamy and oh-so-scrummy treat" made with the retailer's "iconic" British Red Diamond Strawberries.

With a thick layer of whipped cream cheese spread between two pieces of fluffy sweetened bread, M&S promises to "tantalise the taste buds" of the nation with its latest innovation, available at local M&S Foodhalls now.

The creation has been inspired by the Japanese sweet sandos, which have been spotted in some of the UK's trendiest Japanese patisseries.
And although it may look like a dessert, shoppers can find the creation alongside the supermarket's regular sandwiches.
However, the Strawberry & Creme Sandwich has left Brits divided. While some are lapping up the fruity drop, others have labelled it "nonsense" and a complete over-indulgence.
Taking to X, previously Twitter, one woman fumed: "What is this nonsense!!!! Strawberries and cream… sandwich?!!!"
Another wrote: "M&S Red Diamond Strawberry & Creme... on bread. Not sure how I'm feeling about this one (I'm not getting the same thrill as with Christmas sandwiches)."

A third admitted: "I'm intrigued and will be getting one…so I can compare when I try the real deal in Japan in 2026".
A fourth turned their nose up at the combo, writing: "Puke inducing," while another complained sarcastically: "So they've taken a classic combo in strawberries and cream and ruined it, by slapping it between bread. Genius."

Interestingly, many Brits haven't had to travel nearly 9,000 miles to tuck into the sandwich. Many described enjoying the delicacy growing up in the comfort of their own homes.
One woman explained: "My mother was born in Bromley, Kent. I was told it was quite common to have bread and butter with Strawberries. (Late 1930s). Probably not as a sandwich though!"
Another agreed, pitching in from over the Irish Sea: "Sweet sandwiches not unusual in N Ireland - we grew up with strawberry sandwiches, also mars bar and apple / grape and cheese. Still seen at funeral spreads!"

The dessert sandwich was also compared to a long-standing British staple - the jam sandwich. One man poked fun at M&S's release, teasing: "Introducing non-sweet sandwiches is so radical! I mean - its as radical as A JAM SANDWICH."
Another joined in, adding: "Sweet sandos? Obviously we're far too posh and middle class for a piece and jam..." A third maintained: We've always had non-savoury sandwiches. They have jam in them."
Comparisons to scones were also made. Elsewhere, we had users that were more complimentary, writing: "That actually looks quite nice," while another concluded: "These are delicious, the Japanese ones are amazing."
M&S Food first sold freshly made sandwiches in the 1920s, and expanded sales with pre-packed sandwiches in the 1980s. The retailer's food halls have sold four billion sandwiches to date.

Love Island fans 'rumble real reason' Harrison got back with Toni in huge U-Turn

Harrison and Toni seemed to rekindle things in tonight's episode, but some fans aren't convinced as they suspect they've worked out the 'real reason' they got back together After last night's dramatic Love Island dumping, the Islanders realised their time in the villa was limited, as they expressed their true feelings. In a shock villa U-Turn, Harrison, who was getting to know Helena, told Toni he wanted to give things another go, despite them breaking up just yesterday. Harrison's reunion with Toni came just as Harry expressed he still had feelings for Helena. ‌ Early on in the episode, Harrison informed Toni that he wanted to give things another go and wasn't ready to throw away what they had. Helena later spotted them kissing on the Terrace, as Harrison told Helena he wanted to shift his focus back to Toni. ‌ It didn't seem like Helena was too bothered, however, as she informed Meg that Harry told her they'd be getting back together. However, fans weren't convinced with Harrison's speech to Toni, as they suspect he only did it because he suspected Helena and Harry would be getting back together sometime soon. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan said: "Harrison has clocked that Helena will always pick Harry. He is just securing his spot. I hope Toni is doing the same until someone she likes moves in." Another penned: "The sudden SWITCH UP from Harrison is crazy like for the past few days you were saying how you wanted Helena and now all of a sudden it's Toni??" ‌ "Harrison has obviously gone back to Toni cuz he knows Helena is obsessed with Harry & knew there's no competition where Harry is concerned cuz he'd 'win,'" said a third. Despite this, the next morning, Harrison and Harry were seen preparing breakfast for Toni and Shakira - but will Harry and Helena find their way back together? Dejon thinks so... Earlier, Dejon and Harry were seen having a heart-to-heart by the fire pit as they reflected on the shocking events. Harry is currently coupled up with Shakira, but it seems neither he or Helena can get rid of their spark. ‌ 'The way you are with Helena, that's the H I know, but when you two [with Shakira] are together…" Dejon said, as Harry revealed it wasn't the same. It looks like the feelings are mutual with Helena, as she later told Meg and Dejon that she wanted to go to the Hideaway with Harry, as they later went to speak alone in the Snug. Speaking about his connection with Shakira to Helena, Harry said: 'I do like her, but obviously there's always going to be you at the back of my mind. I know I'm going to have to make a decision at some point, but it isn't today… just give me like a day.'

How swimwear is taking a daring dive back to the 80s with thin gussets and sky-high cuts

Forget full briefs or bikini shorts, everywhere you look at the moment, from M&S to New Look and Primark, has hip-high cuts SWIMCREDIBLE How swimwear is taking a daring dive back to the 80s with thin gussets and sky-high cuts SWIMWEAR trends, like every other part of fashion, come and go in waves. And this year we seem to be revisiting the '80s with super-high-cut bikini lines sure to leave you needing a Hollywood wax. 5 Former Love Islander Maura Higgins shows off her svelte figure in a barely-there bikini with a high cut 5 Kim K unveiled her latest Skims collaboration featuring a super-high-cut animal-print one-piece Credit: Instagram/KimKardashian First made famous in that decade by supermodels such as Cindy Crawford, Elle Macpherson and Christy Turlington, wedgie- inducing swimwear is back. And this time round, it's not just for celebs and reality telly stars - the high street is pushing us mere mortals to tackle thin gussets, too. Forget full briefs or bikini shorts, everywhere you look at the moment, from M&S to New Look and Primark, has hip-high cuts and bum-cheek-exposing cossies. With Love Island back on our screens and the women scantily clad in swimwear every episode, we expected to see a resurgence of the V-cut gusset. And last week Kim Kardashian, 44, unveiled her latest Skims collaboration with Italian brand Roberto Cavalli, featuring a super-high-cut animal-print one-piece. Meanwhile, sister Kylie, 27, stepped out in a vintage Chanel swimsuit, with a sky-high cut, first worn by Claudia Schiffer in 1995. Just a few weeks ago Miami Swim Week — the pinnacle of all swimsuit catwalks — saw a host of high V cuts, with TikTok sensation Alix Earle, 24, strutting down the runway in a barely-there bikini. Model Iris Law, 24, recently wore a black high-cut swimsuit, and former Love Islanders Maura Higgins, 34 and Zara McDermott, 28, have been showing off their svelte figures in them, too. Gusset gauge Host of the reality show Maya Jama, 30, has also been spotted wearing a barely-there bikini while on holiday this year. Of course, these women all looked phenomenal, but for the rest of us enjoying a break on the Costa Del Sol or taking a dip at the local swimming pool, it's not an easy look to pull off. Alisha Lehmann shows off her bikini body as she models new swimwear range Aside from the obvious extremely bare bikini line you need to have, there's also the probability you'll spend all your holiday sorting out your wedgie, or even worse a flash of some flesh you definitely don't want strangers to see. Yes, we expect to see these flimsy cuts at Gen Z fave brands like Nasty Gal and River Island. But I was surprised to see M&S selling this type of bikini bottoms, as the brand is renowned for selling comfortable underwear, particularly big 'granny'-style pants. It seems there is no escaping it if our sensible shops are hopping on board. You have to wonder why. There is a huge appetite for '80s nostalgia currently, across music and fashion, and there are parallels between the economies of back then and now — both decades are characterised by economic uncertainty and fluctuating inflation rates. 5 Zara McDermott, 28, stuns in the trendy bikini which is difficult to pull off Credit: Instagram 5 TikTok sensation Alix Earle, 24, strutting down the runway in a barely-there bikini at Miami Swim Week Credit: Getty 5 The swimwear was first made famous by supermodels such as Cindy Crawford, pictured, Elle Macpherson and Christy Turlington Credit: B915 We know about the hemline index, but could the gusset gauge be a more accurate indicator of how consumers feel about the state of the economy? Whatever the reasons, there are, of course, aesthetic benefits to high-cut swimsuits — they give the illusion of longer legs and a smaller waist. But if you are going to wear it, you really do need to commit to the trend — booking in for that wax and giving yourself a body-confidence pep talk, because there really is nowhere to hide.

Oasis fan sells ticket to opening gig after Liam Gallagher post

Oasis fan sells ticket to opening gig after Liam Gallagher post 'As an Asian and as a Chinese person I could not deal with it just by keeping silent and accepting what he was saying' Yue Xiong, who is originally from Shanghai in China but now lives in London, said she had been a huge fan of Oasis since she was 16 but has decided not to go to the Cardiff gig because of Liam's recent comments (Image: WalesOnline ) An Oasis fan has said she was left "completely heartbroken" and decided to sell her ticket to the opening gig for Oasis following frontman Liam Gallagher's now-deleted social media post, which included an offensive phrase. The 52-year-old singer came under fire after he used a racial slur on X, formerly known as Twitter. Social media users were quick to respond to the post with one fan telling him: "Liam, you can't say that" after he had posted an offensive term that is used to mock or imitate languages spoken in China or people from east Asia or of east Asian descent. ‌ Liam deleted the post and issued an apology. He wrote: "Sorry if I offended anyone with my tweet before it wasn't intentional you know I love you all and I do not discriminate. Yue Xiong, who is originally from Shanghai in China but now lives in London, said she had been a huge fan of the Mancunian band since she was 16 years old and that their music had "saved [her] life". However Yue described Liam's remark as "completely not acceptable". As a result the Goldsmiths student said she had sold her ticket for the opening night of Oasis' reunion tour, Live '25, in Cardiff on Friday, July 4. Article continues below On Thursday the 23-year-old student had decided to travel to Cardiff for the day to protest. Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher came under fire for his recent post on X (Image: GETTY ) "I've been I've been a huge fan since 2017," she told WalesOnline. "All of my adolescence I was just listening to Oasis – it got me through life and the music really saved my life. ‌ "But I kind of stopped being a fan two days ago because what Liam said is completely not acceptable. As an Asian and as a Chinese person I could not deal with it just by keeping silent and accepting what he was saying." She added: "I just can't participate in that anymore. Otherwise it will be disrespectful for my own community where I come from." Yue also said she was disheartened by the lack of response to Liam's comment. She said: "I felt people would need to speak up about it. ‌ "So if no-one talks about it it just add more pressure to everything. But I felt the need to say something. "It is not okay for someone to say something extremely racial, targeting an Asian community, on a social platform." Yue explained that she had sold her ticket on Wednesday, after the incident, as a "gesture" – two days before she was intending on heading to the Cardiff gig. ‌ Although she said she was sad about giving away her ticket she said she would be "completely heartbroken" if she attended the show. Being an avid fan Yue also said she had met Noel Gallagher a few times and issued an apology to the singer-songwriter for not attending the Cardiff show, saying she still admired him and his music. Despite Liam issuing an apology Yue explained she felt like it was not enough. ‌ "It was not sincere," she said. "It was not really an apology. I see it more as a PR strategy but it's not even enough for a PR move because what he said was extremely controversial and when people pointed it out he said: 'Whatever'. "He didn't see it as a problem. He then deleted that tweet. So he definitely feels it is not appropriate for him to say anything like that." While Yue said she would not be attending the gig she visited Cardiff a day before the gig as a protest. ‌ When asked about her reasons for protesting she said: "The C-word is not acceptable in any circumstances. "If Liam said the N-word or anything against transgender people the media would stand up for that community. But it seems like it's okay for people to treat and make fun of the Asian community like that." She added: "[The protest] is not coming out as an attack to Oasis but it's about defending our own right – it's about speaking up for our own community. It's about making the world right again." ‌ She continued: "My partner, he's white, his friends and people in the industry found it not acceptable. But they were just really surprised as nobody said anything about it. "I've been talking to loads in the Chinese community fan groups. They're completely shattered, they're completely heartbroken." Oasis will be performing in Cardiff's Principality Stadium on Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5, with fans flocking to the Welsh capital in the lead up to the event. Article continues below WalesOnline has approached Oasis' public representative for a comment.
