Marks and Spencer launch 'game-changing' strawberry and cream sandwich but Brits are divided
Sweet and savoury can be a hit or a miss for some people, but one leading UK supermarket is hoping it will be a smash hit for foodies across the country, with the release of its first-ever summer dessert sandwich.
Marks and Spencer has unveiled the limited-edition Strawberry & Creme Sandwich, billed as a "game-changing sweet, creamy and oh-so-scrummy treat" made with the retailer's "iconic" British Red Diamond Strawberries.
With a thick layer of whipped cream cheese spread between two pieces of fluffy sweetened bread, M&S promises to "tantalise the taste buds" of the nation with its latest innovation, available at local M&S Foodhalls now.
The creation has been inspired by the Japanese sweet sandos, which have been spotted in some of the UK's trendiest Japanese patisseries.
And although it may look like a dessert, shoppers can find the creation alongside the supermarket's regular sandwiches.
However, the Strawberry & Creme Sandwich has left Brits divided. While some are lapping up the fruity drop, others have labelled it "nonsense" and a complete over-indulgence.
Taking to X, previously Twitter, one woman fumed: "What is this nonsense!!!! Strawberries and cream… sandwich?!!!"
Another wrote: "M&S Red Diamond Strawberry & Creme... on bread. Not sure how I'm feeling about this one (I'm not getting the same thrill as with Christmas sandwiches)."
A third admitted: "I'm intrigued and will be getting one…so I can compare when I try the real deal in Japan in 2026".
A fourth turned their nose up at the combo, writing: "Puke inducing," while another complained sarcastically: "So they've taken a classic combo in strawberries and cream and ruined it, by slapping it between bread. Genius."
Interestingly, many Brits haven't had to travel nearly 9,000 miles to tuck into the sandwich. Many described enjoying the delicacy growing up in the comfort of their own homes.
One woman explained: "My mother was born in Bromley, Kent. I was told it was quite common to have bread and butter with Strawberries. (Late 1930s). Probably not as a sandwich though!"
Another agreed, pitching in from over the Irish Sea: "Sweet sandwiches not unusual in N Ireland - we grew up with strawberry sandwiches, also mars bar and apple / grape and cheese. Still seen at funeral spreads!"
The dessert sandwich was also compared to a long-standing British staple - the jam sandwich. One man poked fun at M&S's release, teasing: "Introducing non-sweet sandwiches is so radical! I mean - its as radical as A JAM SANDWICH."
Another joined in, adding: "Sweet sandos? Obviously we're far too posh and middle class for a piece and jam..." A third maintained: We've always had non-savoury sandwiches. They have jam in them."
Comparisons to scones were also made. Elsewhere, we had users that were more complimentary, writing: "That actually looks quite nice," while another concluded: "These are delicious, the Japanese ones are amazing."
M&S Food first sold freshly made sandwiches in the 1920s, and expanded sales with pre-packed sandwiches in the 1980s. The retailer's food halls have sold four billion sandwiches to date.

Whatever the reasons, there are, of course, aesthetic benefits to high-cut swimsuits — they give the illusion of longer legs and a smaller waist. But if you are going to wear it, you really do need to commit to the trend — booking in for that wax and giving yourself a body-confidence pep talk, because there really is nowhere to hide.

The 52-year-old singer came under fire after he used a racial slur on X, formerly known as Twitter. Social media users were quick to respond to the post with one fan telling him: "Liam, you can't say that" after he had posted an offensive term that is used to mock or imitate languages spoken in China or people from east Asia or of east Asian descent. Liam deleted the post and issued an apology. He wrote: "Sorry if I offended anyone with my tweet before it wasn't intentional you know I love you all and I do not discriminate. Peace and love LG x". However Yue described Liam's remark as "completely not acceptable". As a result the Goldsmiths student said she had sold her ticket for the opening night of Oasis' reunion tour, Live '25, in Cardiff on Friday, July 4. Article continues below On Thursday the 23-year-old student had decided to travel to Cardiff for the day to protest. Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher came under fire for his recent post on X (Image: GETTY ) "I've been I've been a huge fan since 2017," she told WalesOnline. "All of my adolescence I was just listening to Oasis – it got me through life and the music really saved my life. "But I kind of stopped being a fan two days ago because what Liam said is completely not acceptable. As an Asian and as a Chinese person I could not deal with it just by keeping silent and accepting what he was saying." She added: "I just can't participate in that anymore. Otherwise it will be disrespectful for my own community where I come from." Yue also said she was disheartened by the lack of response to Liam's comment. She said: "I felt people would need to speak up about it. "So if no-one talks about it it just add more pressure to everything. But I felt the need to say something. "It is not okay for someone to say something extremely racial, targeting an Asian community, on a social platform." Yue explained that she had sold her ticket on Wednesday, after the incident, as a "gesture" – two days before she was intending on heading to the Cardiff gig. Although she said she was sad about giving away her ticket she said she would be "completely heartbroken" if she attended the show. Being an avid fan Yue also said she had met Noel Gallagher a few times and issued an apology to the singer-songwriter for not attending the Cardiff show, saying she still admired him and his music. Despite Liam issuing an apology Yue explained she felt like it was not enough. "It was not sincere," she said. "It was not really an apology. I see it more as a PR strategy but it's not even enough for a PR move because what he said was extremely controversial and when people pointed it out he said: 'Whatever'. "He didn't see it as a problem. He then deleted that tweet. So he definitely feels it is not appropriate for him to say anything like that." While Yue said she would not be attending the gig she visited Cardiff a day before the gig as a protest. When asked about her reasons for protesting she said: "The C-word is not acceptable in any circumstances. "If Liam said the N-word or anything against transgender people the media would stand up for that community. But it seems like it's okay for people to treat and make fun of the Asian community like that." She added: "[The protest] is not coming out as an attack to Oasis but it's about defending our own right – it's about speaking up for our own community. It's about making the world right again." She continued: "My partner, he's white, his friends and people in the industry found it not acceptable. But they were just really surprised as nobody said anything about it. "I've been talking to loads in the Chinese community fan groups. They're completely shattered, they're completely heartbroken." Oasis will be performing in Cardiff's Principality Stadium on Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5, with fans flocking to the Welsh capital in the lead up to the event.
