Women's Euro 2025: How to watch the first round of group stage matches

The group stage commences with Finland and Iceland. Finland has been a benign competitor since its 2005 semifinal stunner. Iceland employs Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir, famous for her long throw-ins. Group A then continues with Switzerland and Norway, the two favorites to make it out. The Swiss have a budding star on the wing: 18-year-old Sydney Schertenleib. With Barcelona, she is already in the 95th percentile in shots and 97th percentile in take-ons.
Belgium and Italy get Group B started on Thursday. Belgian captain Tessa Wullaert is the country's all-time leading scorer by a massive margin (92 to Janice Cayman's 48). Italian ascendant Emma Severini looks for her second international goal ahead of her 22nd birthday.
Then, the group's headliner: Spain-Portugal pits border nations against one another, and the Spanish side likes its chances after consecutive trophy lifts in 2023 and 2024. Alexia Putellas, a two-time Ballon d'Or recipient, paces her country with end-to-end midfield prowess. She's back to full strength after an ACL tear took her out of the 2022 tournament.
Group C debuts on Friday. Denmark captain Pernille Harder earned UEFA Women's Player of the Year honors in 2018 and 2020, becoming the first player to take that award home multiple times. The Bayern Munich bulwark will go against dark horse Sweden, fronted by Chelsea winger Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.
Then comes the historical juggernaut. Germany has won this tournament eight times in 13 total stagings, and the DFB women were runners-up in 2022. Poland's aspirations are modest (this is its first time qualifying for Euros), but Ewa Pajor's exhilarating game is anything but. The 28-year-old Barcelona striker is a nifty finisher and should make for an awesome watch.

Saturday closes out the first leg of group play. Group D has Wales making its tourney debut versus Lineth Beerensteyn, Jill Roord and the attacking Dutch outfit. The Netherlands are captained by Sherida Spitse, who has repped her country internationally since 2006 (!).
The first round of group matches closes with another pair of neighboring rivals. Elite French defender Selma Bacha battles back from ankle surgery; she and her teammates will try to slow down the title holders. England manager Sarina Wiegman guided her Lionesses to the 2023 World Cup final. She has 10 players with at least 50 caps on her roster. Chelsea's Lucy Bronze is the most experienced, with 134 appearances since her 2013 debut.

England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick left unimpressed with India's tactics
England engaged in another day of angry on-field exchanges in their decisive fifth Test against India, with the tourists openly targeting Joe Root and assistant coach Marcus Trescothick taking a dim view of the opposition's antics. There have been several fractious moments between the teams since a time-wasting row at Lord's lit the blue touch paper and there were another three to add to the list on a box office second day at the Kia Oval. There were 342 runs and 15 wickets in total, with India ending up with a 52-run lead at 75 for two in their second innings. But the post-match debates lingered on the latest batch of flashpoints. Root was visibly riled by something that was said to him by Prasidh Krishna, shouting indignantly at the seamer before the umpires moved to warn India about their behaviour. Ben Duckett was at the centre of two incidents, the second of which appeared to involve him enraging Sai Sudharsan following his late dismissal. Earlier, having been picked up on stump microphones telling Akash Deep 'you can't get me out', he went on to be dismissed by the pace bowler and received an unusual send-off. Deep put his arm over the opener's shoulders as he walked towards the pavilion and grinned as he offered some unsolicited farewell words. 'There is no need to walk him off in that fashion. Your job is done at that point,' said Trescothick, England's assistant coach. 'I don't think I've ever seen a bowler do that after getting someone out. It was strange really.' Television cameras had picked up Trescothick making some animated gestures in the dressing room and he explained: 'We were chatting on the balcony. Many in my time would have just dropped the elbow on him or something quite different. I was just laughing and joking about it.' As for Root's uncharacteristic tirade, Trescothick added: 'I think they made a comment, didn't they? He (Krishna) tried to get after him and spark him up a little bit. Joe's normally the kind of guy who laughs and giggles and allows things to happen, but today he chose a different route. Today Joe bit back.' Krishna admitted it was part of a deliberate ploy to unsettle England's best batter but insisted nothing untoward had been said. 'That was the plan, but I didn't really expect the couple of words that I said to get such a big reaction from him,' he said. 'It was a very small thing. I think it was just a competitive edge amongst us that was coming out. But I love the guy that he is, he's a legend of the game.' Former England captain Sir Alastair Cook told BBC's Test Match Special the tactic may have been a smart one and predicted more of the same as the game moves towards its conclusion. 'Why wouldn't you try to upset Joe Root? His record against India is superb,' he said. 'You can say that it did work because Joe only got 29 when he normally averages 60 against them, so it's a success. Fair play to Krishna. I hope it didn't cross that line and was good old honest sledging. It definitely got Joe Root out of his bubble. 'We're in for some more fireworks. It's not going away for the next three days.'

US keeper Turner joins Lyon from Notts Forest, loaned to MLS
US international goalkeeper Matt Turner on Friday signed for Lyon from Nottingham Forest with the French club loaning him immediately to MLS side New England Revolution. Lyon paid eight million euros ($9.2 million) for the 31-year-old who has 52 caps for the United States. A 10 percent profit-sharing interest on the capital gain of a potential future transfer is included in the transaction. Turner's loan to the New England Revolution comes with a three-million euro purchase option. Turner moved to Forest from Arsenal in August 2023 and played 21 times in all competitions before heading to Crystal Palace in the 2024/25 season, in a year-long loan deal. He helped Crystal Palace win their first major trophy after beating Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final in Wembley in May. Lyon also announced it had loaned Croatian international defender Duje Caleta-Car to Spanish club Real Sociedad for one year with a four million euro purchase option.
