Man jailed for arson at Cardiff supported accommodation unit
The court heard the fire was initially believed to be accidental, but CCTV of the incident later led to Jakes being arrested two-and-a-half months later, on 20 May.Images played in court showed him igniting a lighter before pressing the flame against a wall and a skirting board, before walking away.In a prepared statement following his arrest, Jakes said he had not intended to start the fire, but was trying to burn a cockroach he had seen. The court heard damage to the building had been "extensive", with initial estimates put at £2.2m, but that insurance companies had already paid out over £3.3m related to the incident.Sentencing Jakes, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke said she had "questioned the prosecution as to why you haven't been charged for a more serious offence" given the "reckless" nature of his actions and the damage caused. She added Jakes, who was under the influence of drugs at the time, had acted "without thought for the risk you were causing", or the vulnerable people who were affected.Jakes, whom the court heard had an extensive criminal record, had previously pleaded guilty to one count of arson. He was sentenced to one year and four months, at least half of which will be served in custody, and ordered to pay costs of £187.

Four remanded in custody after aircraft damaged at RAF Brize Norton
Four people have been remanded in custody after two Voyager aircraft were damaged at RAF Brize Norton in a demonstration allegedly carried out by members of Palestine Action. Amy Gardiner-Gibson, 29, Jony Cink, 24, Daniel Jeronymides-Norie, 36, and Lewis Chiaramello, 22, appeared at Westminster magistrates court in custody on Thursday. The defendants spoke only to confirm their names. The incident in Oxfordshire caused about £7m worth of damage to the aircraft on 20 June, police said previously. Counter-terrorism policing south-east on Wednesday charged the defendants with conspiracy to enter a prohibited place knowingly for a purpose prejudicial to the safety or interests of the United Kingdom, and conspiracy to commit criminal damage, under the Criminal Law Act 1977. There was applause and chants of 'free Palestine' from the packed public gallery as the defendants were led away. They will next appear at the Old Bailey on 18 July.

Mystery figure dressed as big cat on the prowl
UGC A mystery figure dressed in a large black cat costume has been seen prowling secluded areas close to a beach. The bizarre sightings have prompted a flurry of comments and photographs posted on Facebook by residents living near Wallasey beach in Wirral. A video posted on the website showed car passengers screaming as the figure was seen approaching close to their vehicle. Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell said she hoped anyone with concerns would report them to the police. One Facebook user posted: "Was walking my dog tonight and heard a man making cat noises, shone a torch he was waving his arms at me before crawling up the hill. Never been so scared." Another told the BBC how she was out for a dog walk when she noticed something strange. UGC The woman said: "I drove down to the coast by the Harvester pub to walk my dog and as soon as I was away from the street lights I began to hear a feline growling to my left. "My little terrier, Mac, started barking away at the figure, so I got my phone for light and captured a short video. A man in a panther costume then crawled up the hill on all fours. "I didn't feel scared really, he was just waving his arms and making panther noises. I felt more confused than scared." Another man walking his dog along the beach said he believed he knew who the figure might be and thought it was intended to be a prank. "I don't know his name, I think it's just a wind up. He's definitely not out to frighten people, he does it for fun," he said. "He just likes being a giant cat. He doesn't frighten our dog."
