
Start budgeting to be happier: New study reveals surprising link between smart money management and mental health
In an eye-opening new study, finance experts at the University of South Australia have found a surprisingly strong connection between everyday financial habits and mental wellbeing. From regular savings to timely credit card repayments, the research suggests that your wallet and your mind may be more closely linked than you think.
The study titled 'Understanding the Effect of Financial Behaviour on Mental Health: Evidence From Australia', based on data from the long-running Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey, followed over 17,000 Australians aged 15 and older across two decades. Researchers discovered that individuals who followed stable financial routines — especially those who saved consistently and paid off credit card debt on time — reported not only better mental health, but also higher energy levels, stronger social ties, and greater overall life satisfaction.
Professor Rajabrata Banerjee, an expert in applied economics and a member of UniSA's Centre for Markets, Values and Inclusion, explains that while the stress of debt has long been known to negatively affect mental health, less attention has been paid to the positive impact of proactive money habits. 'We already know that having high debt and low savings has a negative impact on mental health,' Banerjee said in the university's official release. 'But we wanted to learn more about the behaviors — like how often someone saves or pays off debt — that might reduce financial strain and improve wellbeing.' The findings couldn't be more timely. With Australians grappling with rising utility bills and persistent cost-of-living pressures, the financial strain is more real than ever, especially for younger people. The study found that sharp increases in the cost of electricity, gas and water hit younger individuals hardest, since they typically have lower savings and higher levels of debt. This in turn affects their ability to save or pay off debt, triggering a cycle of financial stress and mental fatigue.
Interestingly, the benefits of healthy money habits weren't exclusive to any particular income group. Whether someone earned a little or a lot, the study showed that consistent saving and debt management offered a mental health boost. Even small savings could make a meaningful difference when done regularly. Another notable finding was the gender gap in financial impact. 'The positive effect of savings on mental health was stronger for men than for women,' said Banerjee. This may reflect deeper societal patterns where men are still more often the primary financial decision-makers in households, a factor that can exacerbate gender disparities in both money management and mental health outcomes. The study makes a compelling case for rethinking personal finance not just as an economic tool, but as a mental health strategy. Financial hardship, Banerjee warns, can lead to a loss of independence, long-term insecurity, and even continuous debt cycles. 'When people are financially strained, they often miss out on investing in their future, and that adds to a sense of hopelessness,' he noted. 'But healthy financial behaviors create stability, open doors, and significantly reduce mental stress.' So while therapy, mindfulness, and self-care remain essential to wellbeing, don't underestimate the quiet power of consistent savings and timely bill payments. Sometimes, peace of mind begins with a balance sheet.

iStock Do not discount the impact of inflation on your wealth in the long run Ever wonder how financial experts work out numbers to address the personal finance queries of their clients? The two concepts—compounding and discounting—play a critical role in calculations for personal finance management. While the former helps to calculate how much the investment will grow in the future, the latter determines how much future cash flow is worth today. Both these concepts are based on the 'time value of money,' which holds that money available today is more valuable than the same amount received in the future, due to its potential earning example, Rs.100 received today can be invested at 7% rate and will become Rs.107 after a year. Why these concepts matter? Factors such as income stability, spending habits, debt levels, inflation and interest rate fluctuations, and broader macroeconomic changes influence money management. Compounding and discounting aid this process by supporting budgeting, risk assessment, asset valuation, and overall financial planning. In addition, compounding helps investors to understand the benefits of long-term investing, early savings, consistency and reinvestment gains. On the other hand, discounting assists in assessing the viability of different investment options, evaluating the impact of inflation, and estimating the fair value of assets. Instead of delving into the mathematics of compounding and discounting, we tried to demonstrate its applications by creating various numbers presented in Table 1 and Table 2 are calculated assuming Rs.1 is invested whereas Table 3 and 4 are also based on annual expenditures and purchasing power of Rs.1. Therefore, these numbers can be used as multipliers for determining the maturity or purchasing value of any amount. Table 5 includes absolute values that cannot be used as It works by adding interest back to the principal. The subsequent interest amount is then calculated on the new principal amount. By continuously reinvesting the earnings, compounding allows the value of an investment to grow at an increasing rate. The level of interest rate, time horizon, and frequency of compounding play a key role in magnifying the effect of compounding. The investments can be made lump sum (fixed deposits, National Saving Certificates) or one-time in stocks or mutual funds, or can be spread over time (recurring deposit or mutual fund SIPs). So, Rs.1 lakh invested for 5 years at 8% interest rate has a maturity value of Rs.1.47 lakh (Rs.1 lakh x 1.47), whereas the same amount if invested for 20 years will grow to Rs.4.66 lakh. The benefit of compounding becomes evident as time the interest rate also helps in accelerating the growth; however, the impact is more pronounced in the later years. For a strong compounding effect, a longer tenure and a higher interest rate are required. Table 2 helps in finding out the maturity value of periodic (monthly) investments for different tenures and interest rates. One can multiply the monthly investments to find the maturity value. For example, investment of Rs.20,000 per month at a 10% interest rate for 24 months will create a maturity value of Rs.5.29 lakh (20,000 x 26.45).The table highlights the importance of starting early investments. Even with modest returns, investors who have started investments early can create substantial wealth over investor with a 10-year time horizon (120 months) and investing Rs.30,000 per month at a modest rate of 8% per annum can create Rs.54.9 lakh wealth compared to an investor that has a 5-year (60 months) time horizon. Even at a higher rate of 15%, the investor with a 5-year horizon will accumulate only Rs.26.57 lakh. Impact of inflation Inflation or the general increase in the price level can jeopardise the calculations, especially for long-term (retirement) goals. This is because higher inflation reduces the purchasing power of money and creates an income-expenditure mismatch. While the income is affected as it loses value (can purchase a lesser quantity of goods), the expenses swell due to an increase in the prices of essentials like food, fuel, healthcare, and education. A household with an annual expenditure of Rs.3 lakh a year will grow to Rs.4.44 lakh per year ( Rs.3 lakh x 1.48) after 10 years if inflation averages 4% every year. At a higher inflation rate of 5%, the annual expenses will swell to Rs.4.89 lakh after 10 years. Discounting is the inverse of compounding that translates the money receivable in the future to its present value. The rate used to convert the future money into its present value is termed the discounting concept is based on the premise that time reduces the value of money because of inflation, uncertainty, and opportunity cost (availability of investment options). Generally, the larger the time and discount rate, the lower the present value. The purchasing power of Rs.100 at 4% average inflation rate will be reduced to Rs.68 after 10 years. As one can observe, the higher inflation rate and longer time create a larger contraction in the purchasing power (or present value). Therefore, investments must grow at a rate higher than the inflation present value proves useful in retirement planning by estimating how much one needs to save to meet future goals. The numbers highlight the importance of financial discipline. A person with more years left for retirement (implying more years for investment) requires lower investment. With 30 years to retirement, an investment of Rs.2,861 is needed every month at a 12% annualised interest rate to accumulate Rs.1 crore. Comparatively, if starting 5 years later, to accumulate Rs.1 crore at a 12% rate, an investor needs to invest Rs.5,322 every month, which is 86% higher. The amount needed every month continues to swell as the investment is delayed. Fun shortcuts Personal finance has some mental math shortcuts that help with quick calculations. Though the calculations are not exact, they provide close approximations. Some of these shortcuts: Rule of 72This helps to calculate the number of years it will take to double the money. Simply take 72 and divide it by the interest rate. For example, at a 15% interest rate, it will take 4.8 years (or close to 5 years) to double the money. Rule of 114 Want to know how long it will take to triple your money? Use the rule of 114. It works in the same way as the rule of 72. Simply divide 114 by your interest rate to determine how long it will take for your money to triple. At a 10% interest rate, it will take 11.4 years to triple your money. Rule of 144 This rule provides an estimate of how long it will take to quadruple your investment. At a 10% interest rate, it will take 14.4 years for an investment to grow 4 may look at Table 1 to verify these rules. The multiple is 2.01 at 5 years, indicating Rs.1 will turn into Rs.2 at the end of 5 years (approximately) at a 15% interest rate. Similarly, the multiple is 4.18 at 10% for 15 years, indicating the investment will grow 4 times in around 15 years. Rule of 70 This is a useful rule for predicting your future buying power. The rule of 70 helps you estimate how much your money will be worth in the future. Simply divide 70 by the current inflation rate. This will tell you how long it will take for the value of the rupee to be cut in half. At 4% inflation rate, the rupee will lose half of its purchasing power in 17.5 years. This is specially important for retirement plans, as it may affect the way one chooses to set up monthly withdrawals.

Are you very frugal when it comes to spending? These signs could mean you're over-saving but under-living your life
iStock To avoid oversaving, run a check on your spending habits to know if you are in balance. Last week, I met the widow of a 75-yearold man who had no idea about the household income or savings. Her husband managed all the money matters. Following his demise, she discovered Rs.3 crore in bonds and bank deposits, and another Rs.2 crore in investments. She is shocked at how wealthy she truly is, but at 68, she is resentful and upset about the acute frugality imposed by the husband that denied them even the simplest comforts. Why do some people find it so difficult to spend money? Chrometophobia is an extreme case of fear, anxiety and panic at the thought of spending money. A small fraction of people suffers from this irrational affliction. It's not a very well-understood or diagnosed condition, but in milder formats, it does exist around us. Some of us are able, but not willing to spend. Rooted in trauma Some people withdraw from social activities. They won't eat out, travel, or spend time with friends and family in activities that involve spending. Some constantly check their bank accounts, statements and summaries, working themselves up over the smallest charge or withdrawal that they are unable to recollect or reconcile. Some just refuse to own debit or credit cards, fearing these may lead to excessive spending. They also almost never borrow any money and keep accounts with even their spouses, siblings and emotions related to money are more common than we believe. Many psychologists associate fear of spending with childhood trauma. Suffering from severe debt, hunger and poverty, seeing parents frequently quarrel over finances, witnessing or experiencing violence and abuse with respect to money, living through shocks and life events that diminish one's monetary status in a sudden turn of events can all stoke the fear of spending. Sudden loss of job, painful marital separation, and losses from gambling or speculation can also trigger negative response towards find themselves unable to spend even if their circumstances are not severe. A cultural propensity to save, as well as the ingrained idea of saving as a righteous and moral choice, might also leave people who have enough to choose saving over spending. When people have lived through cycles of scarcity and plenty, they hold the memories of scarcity so dear that during times of plenty, they feel it's wiser to save than to spend. Relationship with money Sometimes, popular choices can influence spending and saving habits. Minimalism is now a fad, as is the preference for experiences over objects. Many who think of spending as wasteful or superfluous may choose to limit their expenditure or be conscientious about how much they spend, and on what. They may also associate spending with a weaker psychological response to stress and depression, and prefer to pursue other dopamine-inducing activities over mindless spending or shopping to address boredom or do we know whether our relationship with spending is healthy and positive? We can examine how we make expenditure decisions and become aware of our attitude towards spending. Then it may be possible to align it with our income and wealth, and see if we are overdoing it or grossly underspending and living in uncalled-for misery. Change your perspective First, identify whether the absolute amount is the deterrent. Stopping ourselves every time we look at the price label; scrolling through discount deals, but emptying the cart after hours of careful selection because we dislike the total; making multiple trips to buy a simple object that we may finally not buy at all—such habits indicate we are, perhaps, too price-sensitive. We may be put off by spending because the money involved seems too much. Anchoring the spending to another number— income, wealth or savings—may offer perspective. If we allocate a small fraction of the value of our house to its annual upkeep and maintenance, spending on repairs, painting, and replacement might become check if the opportunity cost comparison is realistic and true. We may have the following rationales operating in our mind: Instead of spending on eating out, we can make the same thing at home. Why go on a foreign holiday when our own villages are so charming? Every expenditure has an alternative. Make a reality check whether you really went to a village or perfected a replicating recipe at home. If these alternatives are fictional, you are only making identify whether your forced frugality invokes shame and guilt. You may be making a lifestyle compromise by trying to be someone you are not happy being. Does your attire dissuade you from talking to others at a social gathering? Are you conscious about taking calls in public on your second-hand phone? Do you choose not to drive because you are ashamed of your old car? These are evidences of imposed frugality that you are not comfortable with. You may have a spending problem that needs correction. Induce self-awareness Fourth, do your friends and relatives regularly leave you out when they make plans? Do you find yourself holding forth that these plans are all extravagant and a waste of money? You may be denying and coping while dealing with exclusion from fun social activities. These instances may signal that others are uncomfortable with your unwillingness to spend and choose to avoid. Take these social signals on board and see if participating in a smaller event that you may plan, spending some money on it makes you feel happier than being left out. Fifth, do you find yourself hoarding needlessly? Do you find it difficult to resist a freebie? Do you plan to hitchhike with others more often than not? Do you hesitate to return dinner invitations to those who invited you? Do you jump in at any chance that doesn't require spending? You may be indulging in clever ploys to not spend, oblivious that others are noticing and have already figured out that you don't like to spend. It takes a close friend or relative to tell you this, if at all. Self-awareness is even tougher. Money wisdom requires awareness of your money personality. Run a check on your spending habits to know if you are in balance.
